Here is how the first crack at doing federal and state taxes went after I amassed all the necessary tax papers:
Wife got her 1099 from SS. I always got mine in the mail just like she did-until about 4 years ago. So in the past several years have had to go on line to the SS website, create a friggiin username and friggin password and then log in and see and print a copy. Of course you only do that once a year, so each year I forget my user name and password. So I try several, it does not recognize. It says DO NOT create a new account.
Look for a phone number for SS. Finally find one. Call and get automated bull crap for several minutes. THEN it says “all of our people are busy and the wait time is 200 minutes. Call back.” And then they disconnect the call. No choice to stay on the line. No message of “leave your number and we will call you back.”
Go back to website and click on “forgot user name” and assume they will send me some friggin code in an email or phone text to reset user name or whatever, and then do same thing for password.
THEN a notice appears on my screen that says “This site is now down and inaccessible.” Try various reboots. Nada.
So I go drive to town to the local/regional SS office.
There, they NOW have a guard in a tiny anteroom that leads to the office and he tells me I have to take my can of soda back to my car. Then he wants me to empty all my pockets. I happen to have two 6 inch long screws in my coat pocket and he says “you can’t take those in, go put them in your car.” Then he lets me in and tells me to sit in the row of people who have no appointment. Four windows are available, but only one window had a person on the other side. Plus there are others cubicles down the hall where SS employees are seeing the people who have appointments.
We “no appointment people”” wait and when the workers are finished with calling the numbers of the people who HAVE an appointment, then they begin taking us. One woman who speaks no English is several ahead of me in the “no appointment line.” She goes up and all the conversation on both sides of the window is in Spanish. Two other Spanish speaking males get in the no appointment line behind me. They do speak some broken English. Finally my turn.

I explain my problem and the guy on the other side of the window, quickly calls up my account and prints me out a copy my 1099. I tell him that I always got a copy of the 1099 in the mail, just like my wife does, but in the last 4 years she still gets hers, but I never get mine and have to go fish around on the SS website. He says “did you update your address after you moved from Tavern Road 4 years ago?” I say no–and NEITHER DID MY WIFE. He says that is the problem. So he updates the address and all is good going forward.
Took over an hour in the SS office. Time spent with the guy on the other side of the window was at the most a minute and a half or 2 minutes.
QUESTION:
EVERY YEAR SS SENDS ME A STATEMENT–TO.MY.CURRENT.ADDRESS.–NOT TO THE OLD ONE–of what I can expect my NEXT YEAR’S SS monthly checks to be, any changes in the amount or to any deductions, etc. HOW COME ONE BRANCH of SS can send me correspondence to my CURRENT address EVERY YEAR for the last 4 years, but ANOTHER branch of SS SENDS my 1099 each of the last 4 years to MY OLD ADDRESS???

THEN, I swing by the local IRS customer service office to pick up the 2024 instruction booklet. The actually office is ALWAYS locked and inaccessible, (but they do have a number you can call to make an appointment–P.S.: I have called that number in past years and nobody answers the phone). But there is a big shelf that has the stacks of 1040 instructions, 1040 forms, etc., etc. THEY ARE OUT OF THE INSTRUCTION BOOKLETS and OUT of the 1040 forms of all types, and VERY FEW of any forms for Schedule this or Schedule that in the 20 some bins.

So I go home to get on laptop and download the 1040 forms and look at instructions on line.
Try to print off the long and complicated, full page SS Worksheet so I can figure out what part of our SS is taxable. Go to print that ONE PAGE, but it instead tries to print all umpteen pages of the whole instruction booklet. I have to cancel printing of that…try this SEVERAL times…
So I INSTEAD work for 15 minutes to copy and paste the info on the SS WORKSHEET onto a blank document so I can print that, but it does not copy “as seen on the screen” and instead jumbles it all together–no lines and columns. So I have to go through and manually make spaces to make everything line up right so I can use the bloody worksheet in a logical manner.
THEN I discover that one the the things needed in the SS Worksheet is your interest income, which the bank has not yet sent to me.
So the WHOLE FRIGGGIN DAY was wasted on my first stab at trying to do taxes for 2024.
