  3. I guess I don’t understand how the Duke players didn’t understand the context. Under ten seconds, you inbound the basketball successfully, burn a couple of seconds, the guy who got the ball should just hold the ball. If they foul, you go to the line. If it gets down to just under five seconds and they haven’t fouled, then you call timeout. Then you just inbound again, and hold it. No need for any further passing.

But when double-teamed and no good passing lanes, you hold the ball and call timeout.

  4. Didn’t Duke blow a 6 point lead against Houston with a minute to go in last year’s semifinals? And how many games have Duke lost this year when they held a double digit lead?

  6. Duke coach tries to obfuscate by saying the game was not decided on one play, Duke put itself in the position where that play could decide the game.

    Nah, that dog won’t hunt.

No matter how badly Duke played to blow a 19pt lead, it DID come down to that play. Leading by 2, 10 seconds, you have the ball. AND you are able to inbound the ball.

10 seconds to go, successful inbound pass, now about 5 seconds, you hold on to the ball. If time runs out, you win. If you are fouled with 3 or 4 seconds with a 2 point lead you still have a 99% chance of winning even if you miss both FTs.

Bad coaching, the coach should have said no matter what protect the ball. If you look closely it looks like he wanted to pass to a guy who was actually covered on the right, rather than a completely open player on the left. But either way it was a boneheaded move.

No need to call a time out. Duke didn’t have to cross midcourt. He could have dribbled backwards or just waited to get fouled.

Now should the coach have called time out BEFORE the inbound pass in order to calm everyone and set up a strategy for the last 10 seconds. Probably.

  8. jason, I think the player with the ball saw the guy in the front court and imagined a exclamation dunk as the cherry on the top of the win.

  9. Yeah, above I said one was covered but it was a ref behind him. He had two completely open players.

But at that moment, even if he flings the ball way up in the air towards the basket, time would have run out.

  11. I did not check the bio of the Duke player. I am curious how many years he has been at Duke. NIL and the transfer portal have damaged the ability to coach players. Villanova won it all in 2016 and 2018 because it had Senior players who spent their entire career there.

  13. Cameron Boozer is having a historic 2025-26 freshman season for Duke, emerging as a top 2026 NBA Draft prospect and leading the Blue Devils as a premier college basketball star. He is widely recognized as the top freshman in the country, having been named ACC Player of the Year, ACC Rookie of the Year, and a USBWA National Player of the Year, often drawing comparisons to past Duke legends.

  16. “Los Angeles County saw the largest decline of any county in the United States in 2025, according to new census data published on March 26.

Nearly 54,000 people moved out of L.A. County between July 1, 2024 and July 1, 2025, U.S. Census data shows. The decline is part of an ongoing trend. In 2020 L.A. County was estimated to have more than 10 million residents. As of 2025, the county was thought to have just under 9.7 million residents.”

And of course it is not only the number it is the nature of those moving in vs those moving out.

You can bet that the people leaving are contributing more to the tax base than those moving in, or even those staying.

  17. Duke fans are complaining that a technical foul should have been called because a UConn player ran on the court with .3 seconds on the clock. I don’t think any ref is going to make that call even if they saw it in that instant.

    Like

  18. that happens ALL the time with buzzer beaters…in fact often the clock runs out and has to be reset and nobody knows if there will need to be an inbound pass to end the game or if it is already over. Refs deal with this a lot, and understand the game and excitement of young men in some of the most thrilling moments of their lives.

The ref immediately calls time, checks with the scorers table to see how much time should be left, and if there is some, sets up the start of the new play with ten players on the court and goes from there.

I have never once seen a technical foul called in that scenario.

    Like

  19. The call for a technical got started with the Duke radio announcer, who, in less than 4 seconds had to go from, “we are on the way to the final four!” to “we just lost and threw the game and the season away” He tossed in that comment about a technical foul because he had to go through the stages of grief in 4 seconds where normally one has a lot longer.
