Japan was never going to defeat the US or battle to a stalemate in the Pacific, but The Battle of Midway definitely hastened their demise.

  3. If Japan has chosen another course than attacking US soil, especially via an undeclared war, it is possible that the public would have been less invested in pursuing total victory. I saw a great discussion from Dr. Alex Clarke (naval historian) regarding Japan’s options, and of the seven alternatives, he suggested that doing nothing against the US was the best COA i.e. invade the Dutch EI and British Malaya for the needed resources, but bypass the Phillipines and use the vast expanses of the Pacific to attrit the US Navy if we did choose to get involved. Japan could say it was honoring its treaty obligations to Germany by fighting both the British and the Dutch, but punt the war ball over to FDR who would then have to convince the Congress and the American people that the US had to intervene in both theaters (which would have been necessary, there could be no argument to fight against just one by that point).

IF Japan had taken out the US entire Pacific carrier fleet at Pearl Harbor (Enterprise, Saratoga, Lexington) the war would have lasted a lot longer, at least 2 years longer and the US casualties would have been even higher. Give Japan 2 more years to consolidate their Pacific gains and build fortifications, It’s possible it could have ended in a stalemate depending on popular the war would have been domestically.

Bitter, some people die of cancer because they don’t have adequate treatment. Others die of cancer despite having the best doctors, the best hospitals, the best drugs and care.

Your niece had an incurable condition. She didn’t lack treatment or support. She couldn’t be saved. Some people commit suicide despite having the best therapy and the best family support and every other resource available.

You said something important above. Your niece would not want you to be any different than when she knew you.

After 5 years, remember her according to your best moments together, and be the person you were at that time.

GF, although your theory above is completely different than mine (no Pearl Harbor attack by Japan vs. a larger attack) I agree that without the attack Roosevelt would have had a much harder time getting the US public motivated to go to war against Japan.

However, as you say above, Japan would have had to refrain from invading the Phillipines.

Not sure why Ukraine was somehow obligated to notify the US of its attack on Russian airbases. They didn’t use US weaponry, but even if they had, Trump had already talked about that being allowed. The pro-Putin “conservative” media is harping on that pointe

This attack evidently has been in the works for over a year, it was not something Zelensky came up with at the last minute to influence the peace talks.

Russia has a million casualties. For that they have 20% of Ukraine, but some of that they already had.

Our $100 billion or whatever has certainly been well spent.

  23. Jason, under the theory of Dr. Clarke, the Phillipinnes, Guam, and Wake would have to be isolated, but not taken. I think the idea is that the Euro possessions would fall quickly so as to be a fait accompli, with Japan looking at the US and basically asking “what are you going to do about it?” The question would then be, do Americans care about European colonial empires? Maybe they don’t but still think it’s necessary to check Japan from expanding any further, but I have my doubts. Once the Brits and Dutch are swept aside, Japan still possesses an intact and huge Navy that is just sitting around Luzon waiting for the US to come out to play…a trip of some 4,500 miles one way and nearly all of it through seas controlled by Japanese submarines and aircraft (all those islands in the central Pacific).

Our industrial might would have won in the end, no doubt (we could have lost everything at Midway and not scratched Japan at all, yet would have bounced back in 1944 at the latest once the Essex class carriers were coming on line). The only question is would we have had the determination or patience to do so if not attacked first?

    Good question.

The other possibility is the US would counter Japan not by immediately going to war but massively building up its capabilities in the Phillipines, Wake, Guam, etc. where a Japan-US “Cold War” would ensue, Japan barred from further expansion akin to the USSR keeping the Iron Curtain but no farther.

Would Japan at some point feel comfortable attacking?

  36. No complaints today RE: SCOTUS. We’ll see how the term wraps up.

So, an Asian Cold War six years early. We would have the new Two-Ocean Navy en route. Probably somewhat accelerated, but without a hot war forcing our hand, still not that fast. Warship construction would still take priority over merchant ships, so the six new battleships, for example, could all conceivably be in service by early 1942, with the Iowas showing up between mid 1943 into late 1944. What would NOT happen, however, is the frantic modernization of the battlie line survivors from Pearl Harbor. Six of the eight battleships were heavily modernized, but without the “benefit” of learning that the harbor attack showed their vulnerabilities, those ships would get minor overhaul work at best, along with perhaps some radar upgrades. That means that they execute Plan Orange (defense and reinforcement of the Philippines) without all that extra AA weaponry, and could be sunk in deep water where salvage would be mooted. Our escort ship program would also be accelaterated, but not at the same frantic rate that the attack provoked.

Japan would still have its industrial limitations, but they did keep pace for the first two years in tonnage built (we really took off in early 1944, outbuilding them six to one or even greater). Their main limitation was doctrine and the compulsion to build capital ships when they really needed more ASW ships like DDs and DEs, as well as mechant hulls to keep the supplies moving. Delaying the way probably doesn’t fix any of that since it is their mindset.

  37. GF – I defer to you on naval matters. I have heard that the main reason Japan targeted Midway was to draw out the American fleet and destroy it in one battle. It was how they beat Russia in 1905.

    Like

  38. That’s correct, BL. Once it was found that the carriers were not at Pearl, Yamamoto was constantly concerned about them. We began using the CVs for raids against Japanese bases as early as January while their CVs were busy supporting offensive operations against the Euros in the Indian Ocean and Java Sea. But it was the Doolittle Raid that incensed Japan, so much so that 1) it recalled a ton of fighter and bomber aircraft to Japan proper for home defense, and 2) led to increased pressure on Yamamoto to do somehting about the US carrier fleet. The Army and Navy staff were actually against Midway as conceived – they both wanted to focus on Port Moresby and then Australia, hoping to draw the US fleet southwards and away from Hawaii (which was in range to easily support Midway), but Yamamoto’s charm and tenacity won the day with the argument that he could extend the defensive perimeter eastward by holding Midway and then forcing the US to come to him. He couldn’t have known that Nimitz ha though of this well before we even broke the code and had shipped a LOT of land based aircraft to Midway as well as other equipment and even more Marines to turn it into a veritable fortress. The code breaking, while critical, only served to get the US carriers there in time to ambush, but the immediate defenses had already been deployed.

Japan, OTOH, shot itself in the foot by agreeing to his plan because it forced Adm. Inouye to launch the Moresby operation three weekas ahead of schedule and with little preparation. He also was refused the services of the Hiryu and Soryu, the carriers with the best aircrews in the Japanese navy, because they were reserved for Midway. Instead, Shokaku and Zuikakaku, the two newest carriers, were dispatched to support the New Guinea fight, and while they had decent air crews, those were also the most inexperienced pilots. Had Japan had their best pilots at Coral sea instead of relatievly green crews, Lexington would still have been sunk, and almost certainly Yorktown as well instead of being severely damaged. Now, THAT would have had a big impact on Midway and still allowed Japan to get a chance at a minor victory even if they still lost a couple of thier big ships on the 4th of June.

  39. RE: 1905, the Russians shot themselves in the foot by having their Pacific fleet engage the Japanese in the Yellow Sea instead of waiting for the Baltic Fleet to arrive. That squadron was so badly destroyed (the survivors were interned at the German colony of Tsingtao) that the soon to arrive Baltic Fleet became the new Pacific Fleet, only to see itself destroyed at Tsushima.
