“The tariffs President Donald Trump announced against China on April 2 are being cut by 24 percentage points for this temporary period while retaining the remaining ad valorem rate of 10% from that announcement, according to a joint statement.
China agreed to the same stipulations, adding that it will “adopt all necessary administrative measures to suspend or remove the non-tariff countermeasures taken against the United States since April 2,” the announcement stated.
Under the deal, reciprocal tariffs for both countries would be reduced by 115%. The U.S. will temporarily lower its tariffs on Chinese goods from 145% to 30%, and China will reduce its levies on American products from 125% to 10%.
Both the U.S. and China agreed to take the aforementioned actions by Wednesday.”
All well and good. A 30% tariff on Chinese goods will probably not have a huge impact on prices and demand for Chinese consumer products especially if some of it is absorbed along the supply chain. There is of course an elasticity of demand for each product, but if for example the resulting increase is 15% I would imagine it will only marginally decrease demand and consumption.
Not sure if a 10% levy on American products will actually translate in a large surge in US exports to China. Most of the US exports to China are agricultural, aerospace, and pharmaceuticals. US made consumer products are probably too expensive for most Chinese consumers and even if they are not it would take some time to create a demand. In any case, you want to participate in a market with a 1.2 billion people.
In any case, as I said in the other thread, IF in the end we do MORE commerce with China than before, I will agree Trump’s strategy brought results.

I am someone ambivalent on the war against “big pharma”, every politician’s punching bag.
Big Pharma needs big profits to fund research and development and testing of new drugs which is very expensive and most drugs don’t pan out.
Also of course there is a rationale to charging lower prices to markets that have lower purchasing power, but I do oppose subsidizing these markets vs. just having lower profits. In other words I don’t fault Big Pharma for charging less in Uganda than it does in the US if it is just the case it makes lower profits. If it is charging Ugandans less than cost then its a subsidy I don’t agree with.
I haven’t read the details of Trump’s plan, generally I oppose artificial steps to “lower prices” on pharmaceuticals.
I will reserve judgment until I get a better grip on what he is proposing.

re the Business Employment Dynamics data recently out.
Chicon and Tina – you did it again. You misunderstood a routine BLS report as evidence of a conspiracy to deny Trump the election.
If you would care to look at the BLS web site, you will find that the Employment Situation Summary (the monthly ‘Jobs report’) uses different data sources and different estimation techniques than the BED summary. The BED press release does not change the ESS report data – Biden apologists can continue to show the ESS report as evidence of job gains.
So, whoever was trolling the government data releases to come up with that ‘gotcha’ was either ignorant or devious. Caveat Lector, as always.
“Search the Annals deeply. No Administrative State references until Deep State was mocked for a long time”
No need. I know what I’ve meant all along. I’ve described it in detail several times. Jason even agreed at one point. You and Jason continued to ignore it (lie about it? You tell me) and go about your normal crap.
Depending on how Trump’s policies fly or fail it’s hard to predict how much of an asset he will be in the midterms. So far he is working hard and differently from his first term leading up to the midterms. He is also well aware how vicious Dems will be should he lose either the House or the Senate, making him choose his endorsements wisely. I doubt, however, he will ever endorse Tillis again.
Chicon – You are the one who brought the jobs info into the discussion.
What did I think of Trump’s weekend? I don’t know. He backed off on his embargo-level tariffs with China and got little in return.
As I mentioned several weeks ago, if you make a series of non-credible threats, most of your opponents will begin to ignore your threats. Likely result with Trump/tariffs – no permanent change in trade and a US President badly weakened.
The deep state/administrative state are terms commonly used by a variety of pundits, political analysts to differentiate elected policy makers from unelected bureaucrats”
MAJOR GOAL POST MOVING ALERT!
“Administrative state” my ass.
Nah, that dog won’t hunt.
You Deep State morons have been claiming there is a secret cabal, a state within a state, an organization within the government, don’t try to water it down now.
Now Chicon and Janzam are trying to pretend they never claimed there is a Deep State?
Chicon – The data that the government reports on is usually collected in one of two ways – businesss fill out mandatory submissions and the Census Bureau conducts surveys. This data is then passed on the BEA, BLS, Census Bureau – economists in those organizations use that source data from a few thousand households or businesses and extrapolate it to produce an estimate for the entire country.
A number of assumptions are made in these extrapolations, in order to make the results as robust as possible. (Pollsters do the same thing with voting preferences.)
From time to time, the government organization responsible for that data series makes major adjustments to the mechanism by which the US totals are estimated. Except for the BEA data, all series are subject to periodic revision – CPI and Employment Situation Summary are the most often re-stated.
As an economic historian, I choose to believe that the results presented – this month, last year, 50 years ago – are not deliberately manipulated for political purposes. The information would be useless to me if it was changed arbitrarily based on the adminstration in power.
However, because the extrapolation and adjustment processes are somewhat opaque to the casual journalist or blogger, it is easy for them to attack the results they don’t like.
Tina – You have been moaning about government-manipulated data for several years now. I recall an espscially ugly couple of days when we had two seen quarters of real GDP decline – you and Trump insisted that that meant we were in recession (it didn’t).
Nobody here ever denied the federal agencies are filled with far leftist appointees from the 20 years of Clinton, Obama and Biden.
Nobody denies they use their power and offices to try to further their leftist ideology.
But “Deep State” implies something else altogether. “Deep” implies secret, embedded. “State” implies an organization. An organization implies structure, leadership, communications, meetings.
There is no evidence such organization exists. No member of the Deep State has ever been identified. No leaders have been named. No communications or meetings have been recorded.
There is no Deep State. Admit it or continue to be mocked as an idiot for believing it.
JUST IN: US Attorney for NJ Alina Habba announces thorough investigation into the incident where Democratic officials threw hands with ICE agents and trespassed on the ICE facility. “I do not take these matters lightly.” GOOD. We cannot allow a single Democratic member of Congress get away with attacking law enforcement ON VIDEO and getting away with it.
Irony Meter explodes as the Cult supported the pardons of J6 rioters attacking law enforcement on video. Maybe some of the Cult’s “Federal assets” were in Newark.
When y’all were buying g media narratives about a recession and market crash, I was buying the dip. Dow jumps nearly 1,000 and S&P 500 climbs 2.6% following a 90-day truce in the US-China trade war – Breitbart
Why would the Irony Meter explode if Republicans play the game by the same rules established by the Democrats?
Mitch didn’t reinstate the judicial filibuster after Dirty Harry got rid of it. Neither HHR Town Crier whined at Mitch for that. Of course, they like Mitch and hate Trump…….
Bitter, remember, the J6 rioters attacking police officers with flagpoles and fire extinguishers were “patriots”.
This is said by someone who has always had a superficial, MSM POV regarding the events on J6.
Flag poles were only used as a defensive mechanism against police beating protesters up with their batons. Police officers who claimed they were injured were filmed later showing it was a ruse. The majority of protesters had no police records, many were either first responders themselves or had been honorably decorated in the military. You’re really a low life for accusing people of actions and crimes you know little about. Why not look at the documentary produced by Epoch, narrated by someone familiar with police tactics and crowd control. He gave the Capitol police very low marks.
Mitch was a one trick pony, delivering on judges (some of whom weren’t that great) and nothing else. He and his wife are deeply involved in China, having accrued much of their assets from his wife’s relationships in China. In fact your labeling of him as a conservative only diminishes who you define and hold in high regard as conservative.
Jan – I watched the riot live. Let me be very clear. I do not trust any source you cite about anything. I would need confirmation from 5 other sources if you said 2+2=4.
Bitter seems more upset about trespassers on J6 than he is about judges preventing MS-13 and TDA lifelong violent criminals from being deported or sanctuary city officials actively protecting child rapists from arrest.
I’m sure that’s not the case, but that’s how it reads….
He IS a conservative, has been for decades. Has been for his whole life. Has been for his whole career.
I will put up Mitch McConnell’s credentials as a real conservative against Trump any day of the week.
And of course he delivered on much more than judges, he was one of the most effective and knowledgeable senate majority (and minority) leader of all time.
Thousands of protesters stayed outside. Were they less patriotic?
Some people remaining outside were also hunted down, years later, and arrested. Independent journalists and videographers also were grabbed and held for indictment. Watching it live or looking at the video allowed to be shown tells the government’s story not the true or people’s story. But, you and Jason are stuck, cemented in bias – hard to present anything, no matter how vividly it shows the J6 orchestration, to you guys.
If they were so patriotic, why weren’t you with them on that day? I think that you view them as the greatest Americans, possibly even better, since the Founders Fathers and you feel shame you weren’t with them. You idolize them because they did what you couldn’t.
If they were so patriotic, why weren’t you with them on that day? I
People were carpooling all over the country to get to DC on the 6th. I tried to do that here in CA, but it got too complicated and unfortunately didn’t work out. Those who did attend the eclipse speech were amazed by how orderly and congenial people were in such a massive crowd. It wasn’t until police started hurling flash grenades, tear gas and rubber bullets into the crowd gathered outside the Capitol Building did people get scared and acted out.
I don’t like to fly. Road trips have always suited my sense of adventure and dislike of confinement. Going across country to support fair elections with a like-minded group was what I wanted to do.
I also support fair elections but I had work that day. Like pretty much every day since I got back from my honeymoon in 1995. I already knew Biden was getting certified.
“Considering that NC barely gave Trump 50% against deeply flawed Harris and Trump has not been much of an asset in Mid-Terms, the Democrats appreciate your support.”
-Bitterlaw,
Maybe Tillis should consider the number of votes and percent of the vote he received in his prior elections, especially against a deeply flawed opponent in the last election, and do everything he can to solidify those same voters behind him, instead of pissing them off for no good reason.
It seems that every incumbent is a “conservative” to jason and Bitterlaw……….of course, the crazy amount of examples which show they governed as Dem-Lites are just ignored every time.
They definitely campaign and talk as “conservatives”. Their actions when in office show something else.
Meanwhile Trump doesn’t talk like a conservative, YET, he keeps fulfilling promises that conservatives have been asking for years…….
An A-hole to respond about 54% of Trump’s donations (before 2014) in 3…….2……1……..
Jan wouldn’t overcome her dislike of flying enough to support the greatest patriotic movement since the American Revolution BUT trashes Zelenskyy and Ukrainians who risk death defending their nation constantly. That tells you all you need to know about the Cult.
“Outside of the millions who probably had to sell investments at a loss to make ends meet, everyone else might get back to where they were before!”
-I think I was about 10 years old when I asked my Dad why he wasn’t investing more $$ every month, and he explained that he and Mom had to set aside (budget) for food, gas, and other monthly bills BEFORE they looked to INVEST, so maybe these “millions” need to start listening to a Dave Ramsey-type show.
I like Vivek, but Ohio has a primary system, and there should be a vigorous debate before the Republican Party citizens of Ohio vote for their choice to run in the general election.
One day, America will elect its first ever non-Christian/non-Jewish Governor and that will be perfectly fine. However, that person will not have the personality of Vivek Ramaswamy.
I was going to say that but chose not to. My issue was never that people supported Trump. It was bizarre cult behavior that turned on anybody who did not worship Trump. It was the Cult who began to redefine conservatism and trash Reagan to crush any questioning of their new god. Dave was smarter than I am. I should have let HHR die. Even DW and Vic have mostly moved on.
I think Tgca was the founder of the Cult. Then Jan named her fish after Trump (Braveheart) which clearly showed she never watched the movie or knew anything about William Wallace.
I could shut HHR down at any time but won’t. I can’t leave because I said I never would and I know what never means. So now I host a Cult echo chamber that can’t stand me.

I only had about 3 or so hours of sleep last night–plus two long 12-14 hours on the road on Sat. and Sun. coming back from WI. Dragging today. No nap…
Off to bed real soon as 5:20 will be here before I know it.

I must say that this has been a good day for Trump. Lots of victories. Gotta hand it to him…
Now if we could just teach Trump to not be such an a hole…
Fortunately, according to Bitter, it doesn’t matter what the pope says.
“Cardinal Blase Cupich, the archbishop of Chicago, said on Sunday that he thinks Pope Leo XIV will carry forward Francis’s commitment and focus on immigration, climate change and human trafficking.”
“It was the Cult who began to redefine conservatism and trash Reagan to crush any questioning of their new god.”
-Nobody, especially those you label “the Cult”, have trashed Reagan at all.
The fact that we point out that Reagan did some of the same things you and others go after Trump for is not trashing Reagan, it is reinforcing the fact that Trumps actions are within the mainstream of Republican governance.
Yes Bitterlaw, you should have let HHR die, but that is your choice, I believe you had good intentions. You are correct though that your name is now associated with a Cult blog.
Do not avoid all responsibility though on this narrative. Going back to 2016, you were very harsh and personally insulting to all the long-time Republican posters, and there were many of them from the time who left in 2016 and never came back, who said they would not vote for Trump.. You said all those people were no different than Democrats, although somehow you gave Walt a pass, even though he voted three times against Trump also.

That is pure political manipulation.
