The Reagan haters always try to pretend Reagan was an AFL-CIO “conservative”.

Reagan believed in free trade, and his trade policy was not based on stupid tariffs and trade wars. The limited and targeted tariffs he imposed (wrongly) were completely different in scope and duration compared to Trump’s policies of blanket tariffs on all or most of our most important trading parties.

For Reagan, tariffs were at worst an exception, not the rule like they are for Trump.

Reagan would never say the “the most beautiful word in the English language is tariff”, because Reagan believed in free trade, free markets, and free enterprise.

  14. Correct, Bitter. When the 2017 Tax Bill was passed, the SALT limit, doubling of the standard deduction, elimination of AMT, and the revisions of the tax brackets were all part of the same package. The SALT limitations are just the piece that hit Democrat states the hardest.

The only thing better would have been elimination of the tax deduction for home mortgage interest and charitable contributions. Since the doubling of the standard deduction, I no longer itemize, so I get zero benefit from those deductions.

Can you imagine the screaming if Congress eliminated those two tax loopholes?

Lot of work. But with charitable contributions and State income tax we were still better than not itemizing. (House was paid off, so no more interest on mortgage was being able to be deducted by me.)

Marshals Escort DOGE Team Into African Aid Agency

A day earlier, U.S. African Development Foundation workers had refused entry to Department of Government Efficiency workers and the State Department official in charge of foreign aid.

Federal marshals on Thursday escorted officials from the Department of Government Efficiency into the U.S. African Development Foundation, a day after its employees refused entry to the Trump administration’s budget-slashing unit and Pete Marocco, the State Department official in charge of foreign aid.

Once inside, security officials were directed to change the federal agency’s locks, according to a security official at the scene. Mr. Marocco was seen entering the building separately from DOGE officials, according to video posted online, and the security official said he was briefly in the building.

Thursday’s takeover of the small foundation, which has about 55 employees and an annual budget of about $45 million, came after a weekslong standoff between administration officials and the foundation’s leaders. The leaders refused to succumb to the efforts of Mr. Marocco and the Department of Government of Efficiency team, overseen by Elon Musk, to assume control of their functions, dismiss staff members and install Mr. Marocco as the acting leader…

On Wednesday, the test of wills came to a head when Mr. Marocco and at least two of Mr. Musk’s deputies — Jacob Altik, a lawyer, and Ethan Shaotran, a software engineer — were denied entry to the offices, according to Mr. Brehm and video captured at the foundation. Mr. Marocco threatened to return with U.S. Marshals and the Secret Service if they were not allowed access.

Mr. Altik and Mr. Shaotran did not respond to requests for comment. But both were seen entering the building that houses the foundation on Thursday, alongside other members of Mr. Musk’s team, including Nate Cavanaugh.

Brief comment on today’s hearing in the USAID funding case before Judge Ali. The hearing lasted almost 3 hours and covered literally dozens of topics. I think four different attorneys spoke for the 10-12 plaintiffs, and one attorney for the Govt. By far the best advocate as the attorney for the Govt.

These are specialized areas of law and the Federal Programs Branch has the expertise on matters involving Govt programs. The attorney today knew his subject matter — much better than did the Judge. Judge Ali, CLEARLY chastened by the Chief Justice having stepped in to stop his ill-advised Order last week, followed by 4 Justices essentially saying he didn’t know what he was doing yesterday, was FAR MORE “judicious” in asking hundreds of questions. It was clear that he sort of thinks he understands the subject matter while at the same time realizing there is a lot he does not understand. Right at the start he wanted to deal with a couple of subjects he just blew past in the hastily called hearings the day after the complaints were filed — standing and jurisdiction to provide the remedies the plaintiffs were asking for.

In the TRO hearing three weeks ago it was obvious that he was animated by two facts and two facts only — the plaintiffs claimed they were owned money for work they had already done under USAID contracts/grants, and without payment under the agreements they were going to go out of business, lots of people were going to lose their jobs, and all these terrific foreign aid programs pumping money to foreign countries were going to be shut down. His only interest three weeks ago was how he could make sure that didn’t happen. Today he was far more concerned with the limits of his authority, and the degree to which it was probably unwise of him three weeks ago to assume that his black robe allowed him to substitute his judgment on what is worthwhile foreign aid spending for that of the newly elected President. Because the hearing went on so long I was not able to stick around for the end.

But I heard enough to be fairly confident that while he is still likely to enter an Injuction, it will be far more limited than the TRO. It will likely be limited to just the parties to the suit — and not every entity who might have a similar claim — and it will exclude those contracts/grants where the Govt has made a decision already to continue the funding. I don’t think his pride and sense of “righteousness” will let him walk away completely so there may be something for the Govt to appeal to the Circuit Court — but I didn’t get the feeling it will be anything as outrageous of what he was trying to do with his TRO.

The conclusion of the article above for those too lazy to read it.

“In short, it was not the West’s aggressive pursuit of an anti-Russian agenda, but rather the weakness and lack of strategic clarity it communicated at every turn post-Cold War that encouraged Moscow’s revisionism. It was not our alleged geostrategic assertiveness, but our timidity each time Putin used military power to occupy territory – first in Georgia in 2008, then in Ukraine in 2014, in Syria in 2015 and finally in Ukraine for the second time in 2022 that set the stage for the unfolding tragedy in Eastern Europe.

If the West is responsible for the Russian invasion of Ukraine it’s not for the reasons its critics now propound, i.e., because of our allegedly aggressive behavior, but because of our inability to grasp the basics of power politics as we swam into an ideological soup of our own making that bore no resemblance to how the world really works.

We are poised to communicate weakness once again, only this time unabashedly and without pretense that we are about norms or the “rules-based international order.”  If the final peace agreement on Ukraine simply ratifies the status quo on the battlefield, the Trump administration will hand Moscow a major win, in effect undoing the consequences of the Western victory in the Cold War.”

Basically, I agree with this. Pay now to contain the Russians or pay a lot more later.

I saw an interesting article somewhere yesterday asking if maybe just about everything Biden signed was moot and void because he use some sort of automatic pen instead of actually signing himself.

Another theory was that if he was incapacitated would anything he signed be valid.

I think both scenarios are weak, I believe the automatic signature pens are legal just like you can sign Docusign docs online and as far as we know there is no confirmed diagnosis of Biden’s incapacity on record.

But it will interesting to see if this has any legs.

So I addressed that in my post.

In order to prove Biden was incompetent to sign you would need a positive diagnosis of incapacity at the time of the signing. Unless a physician attested to that, which I doubt, it would be very difficult to establish that he was indeed incompetent.

Witness testimony won’t do it, because there will be witnesses that attest he was fine, even if you could find some to say he was not.

Putin will laugh at sanctions. Because he is a dictator with total control of the media, he doesn’t care what impact it has on the population.

    What Putin understands is force.

If Trump says “listen, you either negotiate in good faith or I will arm Ukraine to the teeth with weapons that will do real ddamage INSIDE Russia and kill a lot of Russians inside Ukraine” Putin will understand that.

But because Trump has boxed himself in catering to the Putinistas and isolationists, he can’t make that threat without losing support.

    Awww, this is too bad…

“ActBlue, the online fund-raising organization that powers Democratic candidates, has plunged into turmoil, with at least seven senior officials resigning late last month and a remaining lawyer suggesting he faced internal retaliation.

The departures from ActBlue, which helps raise money for Democrats running for office at all levels of government, come as the group is under investigation by congressional Republicans. They have advanced legislation that some Democrats warn could be used to debilitate what is the party’s leading fund-raising operation.

The exodus has set off deep concerns about ActBlue’s future. Last week, two unions representing the group’s workers sent a blistering letter to ActBlue’s board of directors that listed the seven officials who had left. The letter described an “alarming pattern” of departures that was “eroding our confidence in the stability of the organization.”

    All good points…

“Too many people on both sides of the political divide are operating on the risky and unsubstantiated assumption that Putin shares the same goal as we do, i.e., an end to the war. WE want an end to the war. Putin wants to reconstruct the Russian Empire. And he wants his empire more than we want an end to the war.

In a speech given this week, Putin stated his position in simple terms. Ukraine must not join NATO, Russia must receive security guarantees, and not only would Russia not withdraw from a single inch of stolen Ukrainian territory, but also Ukraine must surrender more territory in the four regions partially occupied by Russia.

Does that sound like a reasonable, conciliatory guy tired of being on the ropes and looking to make peace as soon as possible?

In all fairness, maybe this is just Putin’s opening bid, made with the expectation that the final deal will involve some eventual concessions. If that’s the case, though, his opening bid is a lot more impressive than Trump’s.

President Trump has repeatedly made the point that the art of the deal involves possessing the will and the ability to say “no” and walk away from the negotiating table. But it’s not clear he’d walk away from this particular table before Putin would beat him to the punch.

Trump is sinking too much political capital into the idea of securing a meaningless piece of paper declaring an end to the Ukraine War, even with lopsidedly horrible terms that reward Russia for its blatant aggression. I had assumed that peace deals like this require a lot of give and take from both sides of the conflict. But right now, Trump is putting all the pressure on Ukraine to accept terms determined by America, terms that we have no idea whether or not Russia will accept.”
