“A convict serving a 16-year sentence for a home invasion and aggravated assault was released early in Illinois in early March, and the very next day, he invaded the Chicago apartment of Laterria Smith and stabbed her and her 11-year-old son, killing the boy.

“The killer, Crosetti Brand, 37, who was previously in a relationship with Smith, was let loose on March 10. He was cut free even though he’d sent threatening texts to her in January and had a long rap sheet of domestic abuse”

So the guy is not interested in being free, starting a new life, never going back to prison, all that BS that is the mantra when people like this are paroled.

He is just interested in continuing to be a criminal and not worried about going back to jail one day later.

But he will probably be back on the streets sooner or later.

The parole board members that authorized his release have resigned after Pritzker threw them under the bus.

“It is clear that evidence in this case was not given the careful consideration that victims of domestic violence deserve, and I am committed to ensuring additional safeguards and training are in place to prevent tragedies like this from happening again,” Pritzker said.

But it does beg the question why there was not a barrier of huge boulders extending way out around the base of the support, so that any ship would run aground rather than just ram directly into the support.

D WITHOUT A RULE SAYING THAT TUG BOATS MUST BE USED TO HELP THE SHIP CLEAR THE BRIDGE?”

Tug service is expensive. The bridge is miles down the river. You can’t plan for every eventuality. They did have a pilot aboard, two actually.

As far as berms I doubt they would have stopped a ship that big. And boulders in a waterway are a hazard to shipping I doubt that is practical, any amount of boulders that would stop a ship that size would also sink it and block the waterway.

You can’t plan for every eventuality, the cost of doing so would render the shipping industry unfeasible.

The odds of a complete loss of power at exactly that moment were infinitesimally small. At the end of the day, it is probably the kind of risk you have to live with.

  21. Such boulders are used in Hampton Roads. Go to google maps, satellite view, and zoom in on the manmade islands where the tunnel entrances are located, and you will see the huge boulders around it. Not saying that even these boulders would have stopped a direct hit from a ship.

I think you answered your own question. It’s been over 50 years and nothing happened, thousands and thousands of ships have gone through without incident.

How much more are you willing to pay for transported goods to “foolproof” every bridge and waterway in the world/ When you saw how much you would have to pay, you might accept the risk of a bridge collapse every 50 years.

It’s probably a wider passageway. This span is very narrow, to put boulders around the supports would probably make it too narrow.

    FSK_Deck_Constrction_Aerial1

    Like

  24. it appears narrow in that picture, but in reality, if google maps is correct, the span between the two supports in the middle of Key bridge were around 700 feet apart.

The large container ships are about 160 feet wide. So it would seem that there would have been plenty of room for protective boulders.

But its also true that the closer together supports on the approach could also be easily damage and a direct hit on any of those would have brought down the structure. And it appears smaller boats pass through these gaps.

So yes, there is no way to protect against any eventuality, but wow from that picture, those supports looked really vulnerable.

Yeah but when you add what would be lost by boulders on either side plus a safety margin from boulders on either side of the 160 ft yard ship you are pretty much down to nothing. Even at 700ft once you put 160 ft in the middle you are already down to only 270 ft on each side.

Talk about how you arrived at those decisions that differ from what some people expected from you politically when you came to the Senate.

Fetterman: I know that some people were caught by surprise. And, you know, even when I just said, you know, in passing that I’m not a progressive, I’ve been saying that for years, actually. I’ve just really been committed to really being on what I thought it was like the right side on these things. And no, maybe politically it might be less popular with our base.

But the opening for ships to pass here in Hampton Roads is huge compared to the Key bridge. Much more room for error here in Virginia.

It would have to be a lot larger than 20-40 ft for a ship that size, the momentum would keep it moving over the boulders, not to mention a collision with boulders would probably rip the hull of the ship apart and cause it to sink in the harbor and cause a huge ecological disaster. I doubt any shipping company would accept that risk and it would probably make that port unusable to large container ships. Frankly I don’t see any barrier that can withstand 200,000 tons moving at 10 knots.

So why can’t the ships move slower? The answer to that is you need a certain speed to keep your heading, otherwise wind and currents will prevail.

And get to pack it all up and take the equipment AND THE BLALLOT BOX AND VOTES back TO THE COURT HOUSE when voting is over on election day. I get paid $300 for this. PLUS, they SAY I will get EXTRA pay for being a Messenger.

I get to go to a training in April to find out what I am supposed to do, if I can carry a sidearm or not, can I throw people out of the polling place (r hopefully shoot them as long as I ire off a warning shot first), do I have the power to tear up somebody’s ballot, can I pat down women voters, can I tell people how to vote if I whisper and nobody else hears, etc.
