A point I briefly made on the last thread was that Trump vs Biden polling in the battleground states has the unusual situation where Trump has a path to 270, based on the polling, where the average gap in each state poll is 5.1 or greater. In other words, Trump is sitting at 278 electoral votes based on polls, outside the margin of error (not necessarily the margin of fraud).
But I was thinking back on this, trying to remember the last time ANY Republican led in the polling, showing over 270, with the polls outside the margin of error.
2020 – Trump trailed from start to finish according to the polling done, never getting close to achieving any sort of lead based on poll averaging, much less getting out of the margin of error.
2016 – This one was even worse according to polling done. Remember Hillary canceled the fireworks so as not to jinx the easy win the media and the polling promised her.
2012 – Romney never really led in the polling such that a sustainable path to 270 presented itself consistently.
2008 – McCain was of course a disaster, and never polled any path to 270.
2004 – This election was very close in the polling, and only broke toward Bush near the end, but I don’t recall at any time Bush enjoying a polling path to 270 outside of the margin of error. Even on election night it was so close that…who was it…Bob Schieffer, maybe, who said to Kerry, may I be the first one to call you Mr. President?
2000 – The infamous “hanging chad” election never had state polling such that presented either candidate a clear 270 path outside the margin of error.
1996 – Bob Dole was of course an electoral disaster. Never had any path, especially with Ross Perot still hanging around.
1992 – This was a true three-party election, meaning GHW Bush had no polling path to 270, outside the margin of error.
1988 – George H. W. Bush ran on the coattails of winning one for the Gipper. He polled well ahead of Dukakis at the end. But this is getting back into the age when the individual state polling was less commonly done, so its hard to know what sort of averages existed. But its clear that after the conventions, Bush pulled into a commanding lead in national matchup polling.
And so there we have it. You can like Trump or hate Trump, and vote for him or not, but he is the FIRST Republican candidate since 1988 to be polling, outside the margin of error, over 270 electoral votes, based on state polls.
I miss Wes, because this is the sort of post he would swoop in and correct something I said.
wes had tunnel vision. Once he locked on to a meme, he could never look outside the tunnel, or the box.
Like him or not, GWB was a 2 term highly successful governor of a major state. He was a fighter pilot. He was a successful businessman. He graduated from Yale and Harvard. He was elected President twice. For both governor and President, voters gave him a much bigger vote of confidence the second time around. But to wes, he was just a moron with a DUI who got elected because of Ralph Nader. GWB believed Saddam had WMD, horrors, but wes would never acknowledge that every intelligence agency in the West believed it too, and just about every Democrat too, including Kerry, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and Ted Kennedy.
In the 2020 election, wes decided North Carolina was free of fraud. For this reason, fraud could not have occurred in any other state, because “if the Dems didn’t steal NC, they wouldn’t steal any other state”. No amount of evidence could dissuade him from that foolish extrapolation.
I could give a host of other examples where wes couldn’t see outside the box. Bill Clinton. the Civil War, etc.
At the same time, wes was very well read for a relatively young guy, he probably started posting here before he was 30. He enjoyed rare steaks, good wine, and fine cigars, big pluses in my book. He was a history buff and he could talk about movies for hours.
His premature death was a loss for all of us whether we spent more time fighting with him or agreeing with him.
Funny that wes and I only “split” on Trump recently.
In 2016, he said he was going to write in Daffy Duck for President, and I endorsed the idea. In the end, it was just too much trouble on the PA ballot to write in Daffy Duck so I just left the top of the ballot blank.
In 2020, we both decided we should vote for Trump despite our previous reservations.
All the illegal lawfare against Trump by the Dems does not make Trump more attractive to me as a candidate. Does not cancel out Trump’s slew of negatives that are baked it.
All the charges against Trump are political and of little merit.
It is despicable that the Dems are going this route.
But I am not yet there to say that “Well if the Dems are doing all this lawfare against Trump, then I will change my mind and vote for Trump.” Ther are other good R candidates who do not have a baggage train a mile long.
All my friends agree.–Marty Grau, Dee Leescious, Annie Versary, Tom A. Hawk., etc.
I think aliens in UFOs have found a way to create their own atmosphere INSIDE their space crafts. It is sort of like a fly within your car as you drive 60 miles an hour in one direction but the fly can whip around and fly in every other direction it wants.
TDS is very real. I lost a friend several years ago because of his case of TDS. I made it clear to him that his position wasn’t a condition of the friendship, but apparently it was a condition on his side of it. He wants nothing to do with me because I voted for Trump, even though my feelings about him are roughly the same as Walt’s.
But this person is an evangelical who cannot resist the urge to think that picking a president is the same as picking a pastor of your church. And he is one of those who believes you only vote for the ideal candidate, not necessarily one of the two who has a chance to win. He believes you vote for your ideal, and then “trust God” for the results.
It all sounds very pious and this person has a “holier than thou” attitude against any other evangelical who chose to vote for Trump.
But its stupid. There were TWO people in 2016, Trump and Hillary. ONE out of those TWO would be the president, and you could choose to have a say in the matter, or you could choose to say nothing and allow others to have the only say. But it wasn’t stupid to say out of Hillary or Trump, I would rather have Trump. Admittedly, I decided to go ahead and vote Trump very late in 2016…only because it seemed clear that Hillary would win. Right at the end, there was a subtle movement to Trump, so I figured I would go ahead and participate.
In 2020, only Biden or Trump would be the president. So I decided that of the two, I would much rather have Trump. It has nothing to do with whether or not he is morally qualified, or anything else. I was not picking a pastor. And its and either/or.
I have explained this to TDS people and evangelicals with think they are picking a pastor. But to no avail.
I am convinced that with two outs, nobody on base, down two runs in extra innings of game six of the 1986 World Series, with Bob Costas standing by in the Red Sox clubhouse with the trophy, and the late Gary Carter at the plate, and the Mets facing elimination, that something electric happened in the baseball magnetosphere whereby the curse of the Bambino was transferred to the Mets in exchange for their comeback win in game six, and again in game seven.
Since then, The Red Sox have won several World Series and the Mets have won none, including their implosion against the Royals nearly a decade ago.
I still can’t believe some of the things that have happened. I know someone that was at game 1 of the subway series and said Ventura was sooooo close to catching that foul ball. I still believe if the Mets hold on and win game 1 they win the series. Heck, game 2 (the Clemens bat throw in rood rage) the Mets came all the way back to 6-5.
They should have thrown Clemens out of the game for that…(what if that bat had bounced back into piazza’s leg, shattered end first!!!)
Against kC I still can not believe they blew so many leads and lost
Alas. We are going to have a season of watching Sean manea instead of verlander, acherzer and Yamamoto. Peachy!

I don’t disagree, Walt, but I don’t think you are looking at it from the right perspective.
You and I don’t support Trump, w think there is at least one better candidate, and sympathy for Trump as a result of the meritless charges isn’t going to change our support. Granted.
But that doesn’t mean much given how many people DO support Trump. And the problem is all these bogus charges and attempts to keep him off ballots are SOLIDIFYING his support and impeding these people from even considering a better candidate.
Good analysis. I am not looking to pick a Pastor. However Trump has deluded the meaning to agenda of what a conservative values…just as the meaning of “evangelical” or “Christian” has very little meaning anymore in our country.
I think for me it’s what legislation the candidate is wanting to eventually make into law. For many decades for me it was a pro life laws. It’s is now morphing into various other moral issues like transgender, DEI, CBDC and a national abortion law of up to 12 weeks, and a few others. I have been very concerned about Trumps positions on these issues as of late. I am in wait and see mode before I would commit to voting for him.
“I am in wait and see mode before I would commit to voting for him.”
I don’t have to wait and see. If Trump is the nominee, then the only way I would not vote for him was if Biden somehow, overnight, got his brains restored to normal health and emerged as a right-wing conservative, and proved it between now and election day…and convinced me he would stay that way for four years.
I thought Christie sad he would never drop out, kind of taking on the stance of Hutchinson! Anyway, there is little loss with Christie gone. Unfortunately Haley will be more difficult to dissuade from hanging in there due to her enormous collection of wealthy donors. Vivek is funding his own campaign, and I think enjoying the friction he’s causing among the other contenders. DeSantis’s staying power will be determined by how well he does on Monday in Iowa. And Trump’s obstacles remain the same – getting through or around all the indictments pinned on him via lawfare tactics.

With Christie dropping out now I wonder how that will affect the NH race percentages. Since most of his supporters are probably as anti trump as he is, isn’t it likely they will go to Haley? If Christie’s 10-12% are added to Haley’s numbers that will make her very competitive to Trump. Could this have been a calculated Christie move to achieve his real mission in running – to upend Trump’s chances of winning?
Cth Sudance indicates it was all predictable. They ban challengers to Biden; drats alparantely can crossover, and now the blob backs out. He’ll endorse Nikita soon.
John Anthony Castro, a Texas man known for his legal efforts to challenge former President Donald Trump’s eligibility for the 2024 presidential ballot, has been arrested on charges related to filing false tax documents.
Well, I guess I am compelled to vote for Haley if she lasts to PA primary. On the issue of supporting Ukraine because it is in America’s strategic interest, she is strong. DeSantis is weak and Trump is a moron on the issue.

RDS is NOT VP material 😂
My daughter spent a whole day and then some with this guy last year working on ESG issues related to the state… she says he is not at all who he was then and its all an act and that he makes a bad very bad “Trump”. Cracks me up.
“It is clear to me tonight that there isn’t a path for me to win the nomination, which is why I’m suspending my campaign tonight for President of the United States,” he said at a town hall in Windham, New Hampshire”
Anyone voting for Nikki Haley will be voting for a younger mirror image of Hillary Clinton. BTW, HRC would also vote for more aid and money to Ukraine.
Jan, you are in a cult. I am not. Both can be true.
Haley understands that military aid to Ukraine is vital to US strategic interests. DeSantis is weak. Trump is a moron. I chose Ukraine as THE deal breaker for my primary vote. Only 1 remaining candidate earned my vote.
Ron DeSantis has extremely high ego strength. He is a gifted administrator. A nerd on every policy known to man. He can effectively communicate his positions. He would be an excellent two term President. It’s not even close he is the best choice. If Trump wasn’t running he easily wins the nomination. I do think he has the shelf life for 2028.
After another rough nite for Haley in tonights debate… a great showing in Iowa by RDS and Haley underperforming in NH & SC… I think the donor class might dump her.
The question will be for who? Or maybe they sit out 2024?
Regardless neither have a chance with both staying in together. I heard RDS say earlier today he is staying in the race until the convention … which I doubt. Haley I think is on Trumps potential VP list.
I don’t understand the Ukraine being your most important issue. While it’s important, there are so many other more important issues than this one. Whomever wins from our side they will continue the policy of funding the Ukrainians RDS, Trump, Haley etc. it’s not in the best interests of the country to not continue to support it.
Nothing is more important to the country than getting Biden out of the White House and at least winning the Senate. Hopefully we hold the House as well.
I have read everyone’s argument here, most seem to think Putin wants to recreate the Soviet Union, what he wants(ed) was to divert the attention of his people from domestic affairs. This has been his signature since he began his reign. He knew Biden would be weak and took advantage of him.
He’s a thug. Nothing more. Always has been. Never left his kgb ways.
I believe RDS would make the best President of the three. I think Haley would do what Jason thinks she will do and that’s run focus groups to dictate her responses, pander in tough situations and be squishy on important issues, which is a shame because I do think she has a number of redeeming qualities and could have made a good President if she had held to her convictions.
Trump will be the nominee. He may just eke out a victory, and I think he will govern better than we expect…just like the first term. His VP choice is very very important this time.
In the CNN one on one interview…RDS has one objective get the race down to him and Trump even if he doesn’t win Iowa. Vivek takes voters from Trump I think he is out soon.
“Vivek takes voters from Trump I think he is out soon.”
Not really. Alternatively, he just takes votes from Trump supporters who hates the Never Trump insurrectionists, but who have wives who have TDS like Paul RINO.
So they just caucus for Vivek instead
And Vivek serves as Heir to Empire should Trump get taken off the ballot or something worse or in 2028 should he lose. A backup plan so to speak for now and in 2028 as well as a possible VP.
1. I gave you overturning Roe vs Wade. Deferred to States.
2. 6 weeks is too soon.
3. We need to compromise at a number everyone is happy with.
3. We need to nationalize abortion law. Basically undoing Dobbs.
This is after him saying he was a Federalist and never supported the lockdowns he initiated.
Vic- If we are honest, the remaining candidates agree on 90+% of issues. Ukraine is a dividing line between them. I place defense/foreign policy at the top of my list on the issues diving them.
I reject the pandering charge. All politicians change/revise positions based on the audience. Trump is the master of this. He has given everything he can to the AFL-CIO on trade issues. He pretends to be a strong work leader but panders to the isolationists.

Me neither. Unless Nikki “you must feel my pain” Haley is on the ticket in which case, sorry, no can do.
But today Trump said she was not a natural born citizen. He is wrong but I am glad he said it because now I doubt he would pick her for VP.

Well, I guess I am compelled to vote for Haley if she lasts to PA primary. On the issue of supporting Ukraine because it is in America’s strategic interest, she is strong. DeSantis is weak and Trump is a moron on the issue.

Vivek Prediction tonight.
@VivekGRamaswamy
Here’s the plot:
1. Narrow this to a 2-horse race between Trump & a puppet they can control.
2. Eliminate Trump.
3. Trot their puppet into the White House.
Prediction: next up, Ron DeSantis joins Nikki Haley’s ticket as VP. Ron may not know it yet, but he won’t have a say in the matter.
RDS is NOT VP material 😂
My daughter spent a whole day and then some with this guy last year working on ESG issues related to the state… she says he is not at all who he was then and its all an act and that he makes a bad very bad “Trump”. Cracks me up.

All can be true
Anyway, that is my two cents.
