I saw that story this morning and just knew it would wind up on HHR via Jason. In the meantime Ukraine is sending out ambulances to snatch men off the street to fight – those under 18 and up to 60 years of age are now subject to forced conscription, due to the extreme depletion of Ukraine’s fighting forces.

I can see Janzam is triggered by the loss of a major Russian warship with Western provided weaponry, which destroys her BS about the “aid being stolen” and rest of her Kremlin propagand.

Russia state media reporting that a large piece of the warship was found 650 meters away, which means there was a major secondary explosion of the ship’s cargo, possibly drones and/or ammunition.

The complement of that ship is 87 sailors, you can bet even with a skeleton crew if was in port dozens were probably killed.

Guilty as charged. I am rooting tor the Ukrainians and every ship, tank, or plane that gets destroyed helps the Ukrainians.

Every weapon “bestowed to Ukraine” that is used against the invaders is a sign the aid is being put to its appropriate use.

This is the 11th major warship/sub that has been sunk.

The Russians have pretty much pulled their naval assets out of Sevastopol in order to protect them,.

I think this attack was at an unexpected port where it was deemed “safe”. Feodosia is on the eastern part of Crimea, only about 50 miles from Russia proper.

Both Jason & Bitter are “triggered” by any post questioning the funding, the actual progress (or stalemate) Ukraine is making in this war, or the misgivings voiced by the Ukrainian military, aids, or government officials about how this war is being internally managed by Zelensky. The corruption the Times, the Economist, and other publications have reported on is either scoffed at or said to be Pravda-sourced. Ironically, throwing stones and insults at reports not in sync with your own narrative is what the left does to their opposition here. Consequently, it sounds like Jason and Bitter are following the left’s playbook in their desperation to make the case for what oftentimes seems to be a blinded support for Ukraine.

Like in the American Civil War, when the north and south fought, it was akin to brother killing brother. 3. There is no deal acceptable to Putin except for Ukraine’s surrender.

    4. It is in the strategic interest of the US to prevent expansion of Russia into Europe via the annexation of Ukraine

  27. Ok Folks, this is going to be my one and only post about the Ukraine. I think most here know I had business there for a number of years, so feel I can chime in.

    A. The only reason the left cares about the Ukraine is because it was the vehicle of Trump’s impeachment. If not for that, and their newfound distaste for Russia (remember all the years they were the Soviet Union liberals pushed detente and how good health care was there, and our buddy Obama said they weren’t a threat in 2012. They only became the bad guys because Hillary used them as the scapegoat for her loss in 2016), they would not care about the war in the Ukraine.

    B. Some on the right (especially the Pauliac followers and Freedom caucus bozos) pan Ukraine and Zelinski because the Ukraine was the vehicle for Trump’s impeachment, and not for that, they wouldn’t care one way or the other about the war.

    3. a. As in life, both sides of the argument that rages daily here have crumbs of truth. Most important, the Ukraine will not survive without aid from the West, and we should continue to support them. We can not allow Russia to take over the country
    b. There is massive corruption and graft going on, and people are getting rich there off the aid and military equipment going in. I worked early on to arrange equipment going in, and was shocked at the graft. Still, the equipment was necessary and was sent.
    c. Both can be true and are

It is a lot more complex situation than we can really address here on this board, but it breaks my heart to see the fighting going on each day over this topic. I do not think anyone on this board likes Putin. I think that those supporting aid are correct, we can not stop it. I do think there needs to be more oversight. Both can be true.

Soooooo…..can we stop fighting and posting about the Ukraine and concentrate on the issues that will actually shape this election. I read a terrifying piece in the NY Times yesterday about the Dems strategy, and they are going full in on the Hitler comparisons. We will see good, hard working, average Americans being compared to Hitler and called Nazi’s by next fall, and we can not have that.

So let’s concentrate on the issues, let’s post as many polls as we can, and maybe we’ll also bring in some of the old, and some new to this amazing site.

This is not a civil war and the analogy between the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the US Civil War is one of the stupidest things I ever read here. There are no “linkages” between Russia and Ukraine, Ukraine is a sovereign nation recognized as such by the international community. It is not part of Russia and Russians and Ukrainians are not “brothers”.

Sorry, Vic but foreign policy is an important part of any election and the Russian invasion of Ukraine has important strategic and geopolitical long term significance for the US.

So when you say let’s concentrate on the issues, the issue of Russia expansionism is an important issue. Putin must be stopped in Ukraine so there is no way we can stick our heads in the sand and will the issue away.

  30. Jason, I agree with you 100% when you say, “So when you say let’s concentrate on the issues, the issue of Russia expansionism is an important issue. Putin must be stopped in Ukraine so there is no way we can stick our heads in the sand and will the issue away.”

Putin can not win, and I do not think the West will allow him to win. I think he has moved into a war of attrition stage, thinking we will get tired. We can not, and I don’t believe we will.

With that said, we do need some accountability and oversight. We can both provide the necessary equipment and aid while also ensuring that exploitation and graft is kept under control.

As well, and most importantly, we can not stick our heads in the ground, and get “unpregnant” so to speak. The war is going on. There is no going back, no redo.

My hope is that on this blog we can realize that it isn’t going to end, and if Trump is elected, he will continue to support the Ukraine until Russia withdraws. He will not, much to the chagrin of the Paulistas and Freedom Causus bozos, stop the aid to Ukraine. I hope, with that said, we can move on to other issues.

I realize that foreign policy is a huge issue going into the election, and we need to focus on that. We are at two wars right now with another about to explode in Africa and yet another one in the Balkans. No one is talking about those. There could be, literally, on election day, four wars across the globe. That is a complete failure on our behalf, not to mention the invasion at our own border.

I don’t think Trump would end aid to Ukraine, he certainly allowed plenty of aid to Ukraine during his first term. He is not going to let Russia annex Ukraine under his watch, you read it here first.

I think he will use aid as a bargaining chip against Putin (and Zelensky) to try to sell his “peace plan”. If the Russians refuse it, he will continue aid, maybe even increase it. And remember, as we know Trump is not a fiscal conservative and he would have no qualms from a financial standpoint to continue aid. The Putin Stooges will be disappointed that Trump is not going to be worried about “accountability”, that is a word missing from his lexicon.

Unfortunately, Trump’s “24 hour plan” is probably something that will reward Putin for his invasion, which I will strongly oppose. Undoubtedly he would allow Russia to keep most of the territory it has illegally conquered and he might agree to some vague promise to keep Ukraine out of NATO, a terrible mistake. And in my view, any deal that does not make the Russians pay reparations and refer war criminals for trial at the Hague is not acceptable.

But end aid to Ukraine without a peace deal, no. I would be willing to bet he would not do that.

  42. OK.
Here is my take on the disputed 2020 presidential election.
    *****************************************************************
If you recall, I STATED ON HERE THAT IS ALL THIS MESS OF THE DISPUTED ELECTION OUTCOME AND CLOSE OUTOCME IN VARIOUS KEY STATES that there NEEDED TO BE AN INVESTIGATION into the allegations or else all hell would break loose. In the two months between the election and the swearing in of Biden, NO COURT CASE HAPPENED AND OREAL INVESTIGATION TOOK PLACE. Guiliani and others DID have hearings before various state legislators in GA, AZ, WI, etc. but that was it.

And all hell has broken loose for the last 3 years.

Trump filed 40 or whatever lawsuits in various states disputing the election results. The various courts REFUSED to actually conduct a court case where evidence could be submitted and through the case out without a TRIAL–no standing, would not have affected the outcome, we don’t want to get involved, etc., etc.

Some states did RECOUNTS of the same ballots they counted on election night. And of course, counting the same ballots without looking at VBM absentee ballot signature matches, etc., etc. the outcome was the same. No effort to actually see WHO cast ballots, WHEN, WERE THEY ELEIGIBLE VOTER, DID THEY CAST A VOTE IN ANOTHER STATE, HAD THE VOTER DIED IN 1952 BUT STILL CAST HIS BALLOT, ETC. , ETC.

A REAL and public court case would either explain to the American people in an appropriate way that the various charges of fraudulent election were not factual. Or else the evidence could not be sufficiently explained away and did indeed show election abuse, irregularities, etc. If no fraud was substantiated, then it is proved it was a fair and valid election and everyone moves on. If it WAS proven there WAS fraud, irregularities, violation of State laws, etc. then we move on from there–even arrests, possible new election, etc.

However, I feel the courts at various levels knew full well that there are a certain amount of voter fraud, irregularities, violation of state law, etc. in EVERY election. To wit:
–ballot harvesting of mentally incompetent folks residing in nursing homes,
–people voting in more than one state
–hundreds of voters voting from the same vacant lots, etc.
–ineligible voters voting (felon in some states, underage, legal and illegal immigrants, etc.
–people paying people (money, gift cards, liquor, whatever) to vote a certain way
–perhaps corrupt election officials taking action to put their finger on their scales (depending on their own political view) of whether or not to count this provisional vote or that provisional vote that was cast.

The bigger problem in THE 2020 election was the unparalleled FLOOD of absentee ballots that came into play (because of COVID, they say). Most European countries have run away from VBM ballots because of the chain of custody of the ballot issues, and the opening wide the door to allow voter fraud/manipulation, etc. that could thwart the integrity of the election and the outcome.

One recent poll discovered that 17% of voters in the U.S. said they illegally helped fill out someone else’s VBM ballots, and 17% knew of someone else who illegally filled out all or part of someone else’s VBM ballot.

That brings into play the actions of various state SOS and State courts that issued directives that were CONTRARY to STATE LAW, including
–who gets mailed ballots and why,
–relaxing of signature verifications of mail in ballots
–relaxing of when the absentee ballots have to be mailed back by a certain deadline
–relaxing of when VBM ballots were returned, and they were still counted anyway
–relaxing rules of when people had to REGISTER to vote prior to the election,
    –etc.

The other issue is the “crooked” “dirty tricks” play of others in the 2020 election.
    Such as:
–involvement of the top people in MSM and social media in decisions to limit information on various things including the Hunter Biden laptop
–involvement of Blinken and others to get 50 or whatever top current or former CIA/FBI people to sign the letter to say the Hunter Laptop story was Russian fake
–the involvement in the CIA/FBI/DOJ, etc. directly into key elements that would play a crucial part in the 2020 election outcome. (slow walking Hunter Biden investigation, etc.

Previously, dirty tricks were done by various election campaigns in the past. But in 2020 it seemed clear the DOJ/FBI/CIA and other federal agencies had been weaponized to play a far bigger role in the election and interfere in the election outcome than ever before.

IMO, the people on the various courts (state and federal) privately feared that if the DID move forward with a trial, the public would 1) become aware of all the REGULAR voting monkey business was going on during the very close 2020 election (and many other elections) and that would undermine the public’s confidence in the integrity of the election, and 2) if it became known during the trial of how much various federal agencies were involved in unique election interference would be like setting off a political atomic bomb and the people of the country would be enraged and demanding a new election or whatever. I do not think any of the judges in the various court cases wanted to pull up the covers and let the American public get a good hard look at the nuts and bolts of how an election takes place and of how much “normal” fraud, irregularities, etc. actually takes place in many, many elections. It would shake the public’s belief in the whole election process to the core.

Was there 2020 election FRAUD in a narrow sense?
Yes of course,. there always is.
Was there election MANIPULATION, INTERFERENCE, ETC.?
Indeed there WAS. But…is it “just politics” or were there clear VIOLATIONS OF EXSTING LAW? How could the courts handle exposing all this info without it leading to huge repercussions if the court allowed the big bandage to be suddenly ripped off the arm of the public regarding “election integrity”.

And of course, all this was happening with the backdrop of the 2016 election that the Hillary Clinton camp had insisted was ‘stolen.”

And if the outcome showed “fraud” in the bigger sense of the word, it would have put the U.S. on uncharted ground. There is no provision in the constitution for having a do over election or in having the courts decide who actually should be sworn in as president in Jan. 2021.
Or what to do about a person sworn in (Biden) and how to remove him, when it later was discovered he won by fraudulent (in the larger sense) means.

Zzzzzz…I doubt you really believe that garbage.

The “Trump is pro-Putin” meme is a far left talking point that was never borne out during his Presidency, much to the contrary. The “pro-Putin” BS stems from the “Russia helped him get elected” and “he praised Putin”.

Trump never lifted the sanctions against Russia for the Crimea invasion, approved the sale of lethal weapons to Ukraine (Obama refused to do that) and openly attacked Russia’s operations in Syria and its allies there.

I very much doubt Putin would have invaded Ukraine at the time and manner that he did if Trump had been President. That alone tells you Putin was much more afraid of Trump than Biden. One reason Putin would not have invaded was that Trump told him he would “nuke Moscow” if he invaded Ukraine.

“fI got along great with him. I say, ‘Vladimir, if you do it, we’re hitting Moscow.’ And he sort of believed me, in like 5%, 10%, that’s all you need.”

As for Trump’s not disavowing Haley as a possible VP candidate, it’s his way to use a response with honey in order to attract some of her supporters to his side during the GE. His deliberate vagueness leaves that door congenially open. However, the many times he has referred to her as “birdbrain,” shows how little respect Trump really has for her – someone he would not choose for his VP.

Speaking of Glocks..best pistols in the world…

“Gaston Glock, the man responsible for developing the namesake weapon, died on Wednesday at the age of 94.

Glock developed the famous handgun in the 1980s, when the Austrian military was looking for a new, innovative weapon. Until then, the Glock company had made military knives and consumer goods including curtain rods.

Glock assembled a team of firearms experts and came up with the Glock 17, a lightweight semi-automatic gun largely made of plastic. The revolutionary design – with a frame made of a high-strength, nylon-based polymer and only the slide made of metal – beat several other companies’ blueprints and secured his upstart outfit the contract.

The easily assembled weapon became a global hit, with the Austrian winning loyal followings among police and military across the world.”

When the garage door springs, etc. were being replaced today, the wife comes to get me as the dehumidifier in the carpeted basement has malfunctioned.
Happened once before. Big mess to clean up the water in/under the carpet.
    Not as bad this time.

This time, I figured out what the problem was. The filter had not been cleaned for a while. This led to a clog in the little spout where condensed water enters the removable container below that catches the water. The water was not going through the clogged tube into the removable container that, when filled, a float mechanism causes the dehumidifier to shut down until you empty the container, replace it, and hit the start button. So, the dehumidifier was working and sucking moisture out of the air. But it was not going into the container that holds the water until filled and instead just was running out somewhere onto the carpeted floor.

I cleaned out the clog in the little spout, cleaned the air filter good, and put it back together. Works fine. The flat 12 inch X 10 inch filter is hard to see. Check your owner’s manual.

    You are friggin welcome.

I already gave my opinion on Trump’s plan, and it was not a favorable review. Nothing brilliant. It will be a combination of threatening Zelensky with less aid and threatening Putin with more aid. It will involve the Russians giving back some of the territory they conquered but keeping most of it so both sides can have a “win”. It won’t include reparations by Russia or prosecutions of war crimes. I won’t support it.

However, I don’t think saying he will end the war in 24 hours is embarrassing or naive. It would only be naive if Trump really believed it, which he doesn’t. It is actually smart politics. It’s the kind of thing that gets him votes and helps get him elected.

Kurt Schlichter is for the Golden Calf. Contrary to him, I won’t vote for a Trump/BLM Panderer ticket, but his article is well balanced.

“The GOP primaries and caucuses have not actually started, but Donald Trump appears from the polling to be way ahead. I prefer Ron DeSantis, but if you are betting, you would probably put your money on Donald Trump being nominated again. So be it. That’s what primaries are for—to find out what the base wants and to do that. And if that’s what the base wants, that’s what it should get. I’m going to support the nominee whether it is Ron DeSantis or Donald Trump or… well, it’s going to be one of those two. And I am still going to continue to support the nominee even if it is Donald Trump and he picks Nikki Haley as his vice presidential running mate, which I totally see him doing. I am a Republican, and my party winning is what matters first.

An upset victory by Ron DeSantis in Iowa would probably end all the ridiculous commentary about how Ron DeSantis is somehow running a terrible campaign. The idea his campaign is somehow bad is nonsense. Ron DeSantis is running the only campaign he could possibly run in this situation, and he’s running it just fine. Is it perfect? No. Every campaign has ups and downs and problems. But the breathless critiques of his campaign accusing it of somehow being terrible are just plain silly. This is especially prevalent on social media, where you have people announcing that they have never seen a campaign so bad, which might be true since they only got into politics about one or two cycles ago. His campaign is not bad. His path to the nomination is just incredibly narrow and difficult. Plus, Democrat election interference in the form of disgraceful, bogus lawfare rallies Trump’s supporters and focuses attention on Trump.

The reality is that Ron DeSantis has a real challenge in this election in the form of a popular, at least among Republican voters, ex-president who is running again. Republicans like Donald Trump. No one else does. Independents don’t like him, and Democrats positively loathe him to the extent that he would generate huge turnout numbers even for the senile, desiccated old pervert he will be running against (unless they trade Crusty out for Governor Hairstyle). The only path for Ron DeSantis is to somehow get around the fact that Republicans still like Donald Trump. And they should still like Donald Trump. He can be very annoying, but he was also a pretty good president overall and would probably be perfectly acceptable if he won reelection.

Still, a challenger has to get around the voters (many of them new voters) who will never vote for anyone else and those who are open to it in theory but will stick with Trump in practice. You’re either going to overcome the Trump obstacle or you’re not, and a lot of that’s out of your control if you’re challenging him. The only way to do that is to win the argument on electability—the case is that Donald Trump is going to have a very difficult time winning in November because about 53 percent of Americans unreasonably hate him. You’re not going to change the voters’ minds on policy because the two are very similar, though I think Ron DeSantis would be stronger on policy because he’s more ideological and a more focused leader. The only differentiator is electability. Ron DeSantis essentially has to win with the argument that you should go with him because he is more likely to win in November than Donald Trump for a variety of reasons. Of course, the risk is that the voters shrug and say, “We like this guy enough that we’re going to take our chances.”

Which is what the polls, if you believe them, appear to say.”

I find when JeffP talks about someone “ranting” he must be referring to himself. All he does is sound more and more frustrated with Trump’s presence in this election, where he remains ahead of the pack, despite the “most successful governor in the country” unable to gain traction with the voters. This may all change once the primary voting begins, when Trump’s lead could go sideways. However, people who bitterly flog the leader of a contest, deriding what was a fairly successful first term under extreme opposition, just become aggravating.

And the only reason they were sent into the meat grinder is because a bunch of politicians in Washington and London decided years of death and misery were worth it because a profit could be made for their benefactors in the military-industrial. That’s not my opinion, as the war’s backers proudly said as much out loud.

Lindsey Graham was happy to fight to the last Ukrainian. Mitch McConnell all but said wiping out a generation of Ukrainian men was a worthwhile trade for rebuilding America’s defense industry. Major national newspapers and networks published and broadcast that propaganda in both their news and editorial products. Joe Biden and the remnants of the Obama administration decided Zelensky had to be protected at any cost because of all the money that flowed to the Biden family through Ukraine.

True, DW, the tradition of three Magi comes from the number of gifts. Also, the original Greek refers to the Magi giving gifts to a toddler (not a newborn) who was in his house (not a manger). The shepherds worshipped the newborn Jesus at the manger, but the Magi didn’t reach Jesus until a year or two later, when Joseph and Mary were living in a house. That also explains why Herod ordered that all male children *ages three and under* be murdered: The Magi were asking him about a birth that had taken place months or years prior.

Good analysis of Nikki “you must feel my pain” Haley. Not fit for dogcatcher. But its not rare we get “such accidental insight” from her. We get it from her just about every time she opens her mouth.

    Haley’s Sin Isn’t Racism — It’s Contempt
    Jeffrey Blehar

But what insults about it is that — lost in rote accusations of “racism blah blah GOP base blah blah” — we will avoid discussion of Nikki Haley’s real sin: holding her voters either in such contempt, or fear, that she can’t confidently state a simple truth. The real gaffe Haley committed on Wednesday was that, when she froze up under an unpredicted question and defaulted to her factory settings in answering, those answers demonstrated such contempt for the intelligence of her voters. We can be told the Civil War was about slavery, Nikki — we’re all adults here. Few politicians look good when caught nakedly pandering in public, but Nikki Haley wears the look witheringly poorly — it knocks out one of the key underlying struts currently upholding her fragile public brand. That’s why this little gaffe, however minor, memorably reveals something about Haley; we rarely get such accidental insight into how little politicians think of their own voters.”

  119. U.S. Civil War:

Paraphrasing what many say and actually believe:

“The cause of the Civil War was all about racism and slavery as to why the north and south went to war with each other.”

    So, if that is TRUE,
–why did several states that allowed slavery fight on the side of the north?
–why did Lincoln not issue the emancipation proclamation to outlaw slavery at the beginning of the civil war instead of several years as the fighting commenced?
–why was WV allowed by the Lincoln government to become a state in 1863 and enter the union (North) when its new State constitution allowed slavery to continue in WV for some time
–why did the emancipation proclamation not free any slaves held in non confederate states?
–why did some free Blacks in the south fight in the confederate army

There were a number of economic issues that led to the civil war, slavery being one of them.
IMO (which can be supported by a wide number of factual documents) slavery was NOT THE cause of the civil war., was not THE cause. But the outcome of the civil war DEFINITELY did for a fact END SLAVERY IN AMERICA.
    ********************************************
Historically false simplistic statement is: The cause of the civil war was all about slavery. The north anti-slavery side won and then ended slavery in south and everywhere in the U.S.”

More historically accurate statement is: There were a number of causes of the civil war including what to do about the long simmering slavery issue. Other cultural and economic issues included the south developing mostly as an agricultural society and the north a more industrialized society and the southern folks being upset over disparities of U.S. laws and policy that seemed to favor the northern manufacturing states over the southern more agricultural states. These disparities included tariff policies between manufactured goods and agricultural goods and over the lack of federal government spending in the south on internal transportation improvements to connect the east with the expanding west as compared with amount spent by federal government on same in the north. Several years after the war began, Lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation which freed all the slaves in any southern confederate state where the northern army was in control. The Emanc. Procl., however, did NOT free a single slave in D.C. or any other of the slave states that were part of the union and not part of the confederacy. After the North won the civil war, amendments to the constitution were quickly passed to end slavery, make former slaves U.S. citizens and giving former slaves the right to vote.
    *****************************************************************
I find it amazing that many Northern and Southern soldiers and commanding officers often treated their adversaries with respect and compassion during the war itself, and within a few years they had put that war behind them and veterans from both sides would meet to commemorate various battles and interact amicably. Contrast that with the harsh divide of right and left today. Can you imagine the far left whackadoodles and far right whackadoodles in today’s cultural wars treating each other with dignity and respect and letting bygones be bygones? We can’t even accomplish that on HHR.

I don’t agree with Walt at all.

In my view, the Civil War WAS about slavery.

While true that the reason the south wanted to keep slavery was for economic reasons the basic reason the war happened was that the South did not want to give up slavery.

Everything else is smoke and mirrors to try to justify the unjustifiable.

All the reasons Walt gave to support his theory don’t support it at all, he is talking about political decisions that were made according to the situation at hand, nothing to do with the root cause of the war. Lincoln only signed the emancipation several years later because the political situation at the start of the war did not allow for it.

Everyone who thinks otherwise should go to the blackboard and write 1,000 times.
