So many names from the past on the last thread. HHR had many great posters. It also had epic fights that could last for years. Will Scharf: What we’re dealing with here is a statute. It’s 18 United States Code 1512. The parts of the statute in question were passed into law in 2004 as part of the Sarbanes Oxley law, which was a response to the Enron scandal and other primarily financial scandals. This particular subsection relates to evidence destruction, that sort of way of obstructing an official proceeding. What the DOJ has done here is taken that statute, that statutory provision, and attempted to apply it to the January 6 protesters and to President Trump himself on the theory that their objective was obstructing the electoral count process and that that falls within the catchment of this law. In front of the DC circuit, an outstanding conservative judge named Judge Katzus wrote a scathing dissent saying that this just made no legal sense at all, that there was no basis to be charging all of these people under this statute. And it affects, as you said, hundreds and hundreds of January 6 defendants in addition to President Trump himself.
“…Steve Baker’s case is drastically different than Shroyer’s situation. Steve was a well established reporter (not even a Trump supporter at the time) who attended the Trump rally with the intent of documenting the transfer of power during an important day in American history.
The FBI harassed him in July of 2021, but left him alone after becoming aware of his status as an established reporter. The only issue is, Steve eventually began investigating the federal government’s role in the events of January 6th and uncovered corruption at the highest levels of law enforcement. This apparently upset federal prosecutors who are now formally charging Baker despite him working actively as a credentialed journalist for TheBlaze.com.”

I guess the last thing will be to have your neighbors and friends weaponized against you to report you to the feds if you think or say something they don’t approve of.
We are entering the USSR phase where you walk down the street, and you don’t look at anyone in the eye, don’t say anything to anyone. Don’t stop and linger anywhere. Just quickly move from point A to point B and hope you don’t get arrested.
DW, respectfully, I disagree. I have a Jewish friend who grew up in the USSR. He celebrates the anniversary of the day he came to the United States as a second birthday. He is a huge Trump supporter. Whenever he sees people comparing the US now to Soviet Russia and Democrats to communists he just laughs and says in his Russian accent, “You have no idea. You are wrong. I lived and was persecuted as a Jew in the Soviet Union.”
I think comparing the Dem elected officials to Communists is entire appropriate. These people DO aim for a system that resembles that of the USSR, even if we are not there yet. They want a one party state, that much is clear. So Bitter’s friend is naive if he thinks that is not the case. What do you think their HR1 voting bill, stacking SCOTUS, eliminating the filibuster etc is designed to do?
But no, we are not there yet, not even close, but the process has begun as per all of DW’s examples The Dems are building the kind of structure that disallows dissent so that such a system can be introduced in the future.
Bitter, as Jason pointed out, we are not there yet, but the train has left the station, and we are well on our way. Already, my friends and family talk among ourselves about how its important to be careful what you say and to whom you say it. Just yesterday in Virginia a teacher who was fired managed to win a court case because he refused to lie for the left. He refused to use a pronoun that they were trying to compel him to say. How long before the courts overrule and force the population to lie or be fined or thrown into prison?
I personally know of a man who dealt in real estate and was targeted for persecution by the IRS ONLY because he fit a profile that Obama didn’t approve of. He got clear of it in the end, but the fact that it happened at all is shocking.
I too have a friend who spent considerable time in Russia and Ukraine both. He was there prior to and after the breakup of the USSR, and sure it was worse than where we are now, but the comparison is valid because all of the government agencies and functions, education, media, journalism, law enforcement, health care, etc., have been weaponized against dissent.
Back when Reagan was shot, he famously quipped to the Doctor, I hope you are a Republican (he wasn’t), but the doctor responded, “today, we are all Republicans.” After 9/11, both parties of elected officials gathered together to sing about America.
Those days are gone. EVERYTHING is weaponized. The left will stop at nothing to enforce their communist agenda on the rest of us. Dissent will be crushed. I believe it was Tacitus who said of Rome, that where they (the Roman military) make a desert (out of a dissenting city), they call it peace. That is the left today.
We are entering the USSR phase where you walk down the street, and you don’t look at anyone in the eye, don’t say anything to anyone. Don’t stop and linger anywhere. Just quickly move from point A to point B and hope you don’t get arrested.
I don’t avoid eye contact, walk quickly or hide my views from anybody. I don’t have any fear of being arrested. I took over a blog that Jan, DW, Phil and Tina have turned into a conspiracy festival. I’m not worried.
Where I agree with DW is we are well on the road to some sort of totalitarian environment. One of the reasons is because much of this transition, from free to not free, is subtly happening from within our government, with little questioning or push back from people.
A good example is how “law abiding” posters like Bitter and Jason continue to see little wrong with the arrests of those participating in a 4-hour protest, entering the Capitol building on J6, except for being overcharged. The fact that so few don’t see this J6 debacle as being deliberately set up, to silence any future dissent against a government strangling our freedoms, is stupefying. The fact citizens continue to be hunted down like dogs, homes raided and guns drawn, years later doesn’t appear wrong and unjust, only to a minority, is stunningly blind. The fact a presidential candidate (no matter whether you support him or not) can be chased down, persecuted and prosecuted under bogus, politically motivated charges, creating a precedent-setting legal event, doesn’t arouse bipartisan anger is mystifying. The fact that our judicial system appears to be governed by biased interpretations and implementation of law, rather than the constitution, is frightening. The fact that our schools teach leftist materials, abide by the tenets of a CRT curriculum, that kids are brainwashed to reject their gender, mutilate their bodies, is beyond the worst of science fiction scripts.
Yes, we are on a precipice of losing it all, that few seem to either see or care about until it is too late.
I know of someone whose daughter was brainwashed by the public school teacher, and now she hates that she is white, feels all kinds of white-guilt, and is panicked that the world is about to end because Republicans have trashed the environment. How can we win with this sort of brainwashing going on?
Bitter, I am not talking about conspiracies, but things that have actually happened and are happening. Conspiracies are the Q’Anon foolishness, faked moon landings, flat earth and that sort of thing.
The election next year is one last chance to possibly slow or reverse the inevitable collapse. But the Ostrogoths have already entered the city, and like ancient Rome, most just shrug their shoulders and say all is well and going to be okay.
One of the first lines of defense, to put down a theory, comment, statement that someone can’t wrap their head around, is to call it a “conspiracy.” Such labeling can quickly put such dialogues in the dust pan of lunacy-speak. However, so often these “conspiracies” are signposts of reality no one wants to accept as true.
Jan’s list included the JFK assassination and “new evidence.” Zzzzzzz Bill Clinton couldn’t unload on a blue dress without years of coverage and impeachment BUT a conspiracy involving potentially the CIA, FBI, military, Cubans, Russians, and the Mafia produces nobody who talks?
Bitter, a series is being produced by Lara Logan called “The Rest of the Story,” going onto more detail surrounding the J6 protest. It contains interviews, testimonies, revealing back stories and optics that Pelosi, the FBI don’t want exposed.
One of Logan’s latest episodes involves questioning Clay Higgins, a member of the House and former law enforcement officer. Higgins has been steadily collecting video clips not yet seen of police going into Capitol bathrooms and coming out dressed in Trump or everyman apparel, before the doors were magically unlocked from inside. He has traced IP addresses in chat rooms, talking about breaching the Capitol before January 6th, back to FBI agents. He has seen the ghost buses bringing in what appeared to be FBI, confidential informants assets to blend into the protest crowd, as well as exculpatory evidence deliberately withheld by the J6 Select Committee and others.
Basically, Higgins seems genuinely pissed and determined to bring this government-orchestrated event to light, and then to justice – in cooperation with other House committees including Jim Jordan’s
Jan – Let me make this clear. Again. I do not care if 99 undercover “assets” said to 1 protestor “Hey, the door is open. Let’s go into the Capitol.” The protestor who went inside is 100% responsible for their own actions.
As Jason pointed out, if you leave your friend door open, can we go inside and do whatever we want?
The Azorian Project was a conspiracy of sorts. Hundreds of workers knew the truth but kept the secret until they had recovered a portion of the lost Russian Submarine

Bitter, if someone inside my home, unlocked the front door, went outside and waved people passing by to come into our yard (which is pretty spectacular-looking) and home I would nail the person welcoming people inside and not the people going inside.
From what the videos and body cams are showing, police initiated the assault, on what started as a peaceful crowd congregated around the Capitol building, with tear gas, rubber bullets, flash grenades. This created chaos, fear and then unidentified people in black begin to break windows, as Trump supporters called for them to stop. The magnetic doors opened, as if on cue, and people pushed against each other, catching some involuntarily, forward inside. Once inside most walked within the ropes, taking pictures, selfies looking around etc. Police were pictured leaning against walls, some chatting with these “trespassers,” giving fist bumps to others. The police, who testified during the J6:Select Committee as being beaten up, were filmed in various shots totally uninjured. It was a blatant set-up from beginning to end – not sharing Intel info with the chief of the Capitol police, to rejecting the national guard or mounted police from guarding the Capitol, to unidentified people causing most of the ruckus that were not arrested, to the 4 deaths of protesters going unaddressed.
Sorry, Tina. We live in the real world where Putin is a KGB thug and Zelensky is a brave wartime leader. Why don’t you care who wins. Why don’t you care how many Ukrainians are murdered, wounded, raped and enslaved?
Giuliani has to pay $150 million to the two GA women taking out a box full of ballots after “closing time.” They were awarded far more than they asked for by a jury who has no notion about how way out of line their decision was. Sigh…..
” Why don’t you care how many Ukrainians are murdered, wounded, raped and enslaved”
The same words are used over and over again to describe the Ukrainians. In the meantime, why are the sentiments of those Ukrainians wanting the war to end, sending their youth to other countries to avoid being drafted, ever expressed? Not everyone loves war the way you do Bitter.
Zzzzzzzzz You always ignore the only person responsible for all of the carnage. Putin. Just say you want him to win and be done with it. Any “deal” that gives Ukrainian territory to Russia is surrender. Be honest about it.
Their were Americans (the Union ones, not the traitors) who opposed the draft. Does that mean preserving the Union and ending slavery were wrong? Wear the clown title proudly, Jan.
You’re right Bitter, those are issues we are polar opposites. My husband is having an acupuncture treatment this evening, and is doing as well as expected. Like you said earlier, we are lucky to have each other
