New week. New thread.

Homework assignment- Say something positive and something negative about Trump and DeSantis. I will start-

Trump- He appointed conservative judges. He did not try to reach beyond his base.

DeSantis – He is a successful conservative Governor. He has not yet figured out how to respond to Trump’s personal attacks.

  1. Trump – he did what he promised he would do and the country was the most prosperous under his leadership

He refused to act like an adult instead of a petty child. He would be finishing his second term in a landslide and we’d have 55+ senators if he could

DeSantis – amazing gov if Florida. Even my ultra liberal Mom and her friends love him.

He doesn’t appear to have the backbone and strength of a Reagan despite the country desperately needing him to

    – This shouldn’t shock anyone with functioning braincells, but the strategy of saying nice things about Trump is not working. Shockingly, Jason fraud was wrong yet again.

I hope the strategist class who failed the party in 2016 and once again failed the party in 2024 has a better plan in 2028 to stop Trump. They won’t, but we can always hope.

  13. That is what’s so strange about DA Willis’s indictment. She alleges that the 19 people named in her indictment are guilty of conspiracy because they agreed to try to keep Donald Trump in power as president — specifically, to “change the outcome of the election in favor of Trump.” Maybe they shared such an aim, maybe their 19 minds met regarding that objective, but in and of itself, trying to reverse the result of an election is not a crime. You may have noticed that neither Al Gore nor Stacey Abrams was ever led away in handcuffs.

  14. RICO is unique in the criminal law because, instead of targeting crimes, it targets entities — associations of people, referred to as enterprises — that generate revenue through the commission of crimes. The offense is not so much the crimes (referred to as the pattern of racketeering activity), but the enterprise (such as a mafia family) that carries out the crimes. A RICO conspiracy is an agreement to participate in such an enterprise — to belong to the group and sustain the group so that it continues to generate power and profits.

DeSantis, (1) after a few initial missteps, developed workable protocols in handling COVID. (2) he hired an awesome surgeon general by the name of Joseph Ladepo.

Trump, (1) developed workable border policies, taunted by the border patrol, despite the lack of congressional cooperation. (2) cleaned up the VA by making access to medical services easier. (3) My personal favorite is his “right to try” bill, allowing patients, who signed a waiver, to try more experimental medications when they were terminal, in the hopes of getting a second chance at life. (4) did not start any wars, nor did Putin feel free to invade Ukraine. (5) kept China’s aggression at bay during his presidency because they “feared” what he might do. ….and, there is so much more that people here seem to have forgotten.

In the meantime, back to DeSantis’s unfortunate “listless vessels” reference, which will uncomfortably stick with him as Hillary’s “Deplorables” did.

  26. To expand on the question above, lets say that Trump does win the nomination and loses, what are the chances his ego won’t let it go and runs again in 2028, provided he’s still alive… I say don’t count that out. This is all about vengence and being in the spotlight.

Also…another very possible scenario. Let’s say he somehow loses the nomination, or the GOP denies him the nomination because of his legal troubles. We all know he will run third party…but what is some moderate Dem also runs third party…say the esteemed Senator Manchin from WV

Who wins the election then? Anyone? Will it get thrown to the House, and if so, with the current make up of the House 26R 22D and 2 ties (which would probably go R way), A republican should win the election BUT…how many of those R would vote for the GOP nominee? how many For Trump? The D delegation – How many for slippin Joe Biden, how many for Manchin

  28. Trump’s running again in 2028. I’ve been saying that for the last year. The grievance and grift will be too enticing to him. He’ll still be appealing whatever charges on which he’s convicted and he’ll need to run to raise money to pay for his legal costs. And should he get convicted, he will conclude running prevents him from being imprisoned.

After he loses in 2024, Trump will say the race was stolen, his minions and FoxNews will echo his lies, and his moron voters will still believe them. Just as they did after 2020, Trump’s voters will stick with him and propel him to large primary poll leads all throughout 2025 and 2026.

Several quality Republicans will decide to run in 2028 (maybe Youngkin, Kemp, Reynolds), but the same strategist class that told candidates not to attack Trump will tell them that again in 2028. So once again, Trump will rain down fury on his opponents while his opponents believe Trump will eventually collapse and they’ll be well positoned to pick up his voters.

It’s a sad state of affairs, but I do think Republicans will finally nominate someone other than a Trump in 2032, if the party still exists in a credible national form.

Interesting perspective and instant take from the news media on the DeSantis “listless vessels” comment. One person said the phrase would appear on t-shits at Trump rallies. Another offered that this was an “unforced error” by DeSantis, in that he didn’t mean for it to come out and be interpreted like it was, and that RDS is simply not good at the game of politics. I think it will be difficult for him to have a “clean up in aisle 6” moment with many in the populous movement.

As for JeffP coming out and flaming gatewaypundit, for writing this piece and showing the clip from FOX, it’s informative and helpful to be aware of what your opposite is parlaying so you can sensibly counter it.

  35. The true meaning of RDS using listless vessel.

It’s a navel term a VERB nothing like how HRC used deplorables as a NOUN. He was referring to the direction of the party in particular congressman.

DeSantis was 100% right with the listless vessel comment. There are two factions in the GOP right now – the Conservatives and the Populists. RDS and his allies are generally conservatives and Trump and his allies are generally populists.

The Conservative wing of the GOP is firmly anchored in conservative principles and the Trump populists follow Trump’s direction at any particular time, they often do not adhere to traditional conservative principals. Some things Trump does and proposes are typically associated with the Left, some with the Right. Trump will shift on a dime, fluctuating Left to Right, with no regard for conservative principles, and his allies move along with him when he does. The Trump populists don’t have the guardrails that a set of principles gives to conservatives.

DeSantis’ ‘listless vessels’ comment about the Trump wing of the GOP not being anchored in conservative principles and instead somewhat adrift, wherever Trump decides to go at any given time, was spot on accurate. And he’s right that it’s not sustainable, because you can’t be a party of one man that bounces all over the place, at his behest you have to be a party of principles. You can’t wake up every morning, look at Truth Social, and be told what your guiding beliefs are going to be on that given day.

His comment might have offended and angered some people, but it’s objectively and verifiably true to anyone paying attention.

    – Everything Andy McCarthy says is true. Nominating Trump means an expanded Supreme Court, national abortion on demand, and national gun regulations.

I know you believe Trump is a loser in 2024, but the party should not become little more than a legal defense fund piggy bank for a man who claims to be a billionaire. And calling on a four-time indicted fool like Trump to quit the race is merely sane and rational thought. It’s what a normally functioning party would do. But conman Donnie has transformed the party into a cult.

If Obama had lost to Romney in 2012 and then proceeded claim the election was stolen and incited a riot that stormed the capitol, you would have 100% demanded Republicans impeach, convict, and bar Obama from ever holding office again. So why the special treatment for Trump?

The poll of Iowa’s likely Republican caucusgoers comes as the former president grapples with the fallout of a fourth criminal indictment and a pack of other top contenders prepares to gather for a high-stakes GOP presidential debate in Milwaukee on Wednesday.

Among those likely caucusgoers, 42% say they plan to support Trump — a lead of 23 percentage points over DeSantis, who is at 19%. U.S. Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina follows in third place with 9%.

Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley and former Vice President Mike Pence tie at 6%, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is at 5% and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy follows with 4%.

The poll finds many indicators of Trump’s strength, but the race is not settled and may be “closer than it may first seem,” said J. Ann Selzer, president of Selzer & Co., the firm that conducted the poll.

More: See where presidential candidates are campaigning in Iowa

Sixty-three percent of likely GOP caucusgoers say they support Trump as their first or second choice in the caucuses or are actively considering him. That footprint is on par with the 61% who say the same for DeSantis.

Plenty could shift by Caucus Day on Jan. 15.

A majority, or 52%, of likely GOP caucusgoers have a first choice for president and say they could still be persuaded to support a different candidate, while 40% say their minds are made up. Seven percent do not have a first-choice candidate.”

Let’s hope Selzer is right and “it’s closer than it seems”.

This is happening when the “Finish It Act” is making its way through Congress -a bill that would allow funding for finishing the wall.

I dunno guys. Being only at 42% in Iowa with 100% name recognition doesn’t seem as strong to me as some of you are making it out to be. If consolidation of the field starts happening, things could shift. I guess that explains the constant attacks on DeSantis instead of Biden.

    – I think I mostly agree with this. Trump has a high floor, but I also think he has a hard ceiling. The job of those running against Trump (if that’s what they’re really doing) is to get Trump as close to his floor as possible. Despite what Jason fraud thinks, that means identifying and exposing Trump’s many weaknesses as a candidate.

Despite the attempts to make Tim Scott happen, I think Desantis is the only person in the race who has a chance to compete with Trump. He’s the only one who has consistently polled in double digits. But I also think DeSantis needs to realize the “gettable” votes are not to Trump’s right. They’re left of both him and Trump. Haley, Pence, and Scott have about 15% combined in the Selzer Iowa poll. Those aren’t MAGA voters. In fact, they’re probably the opposite.

The one area where I somewhat disagree with Erickson is why Trump continues to attack DeSantis. I think he does it because Trump likes to attack and wants to drive DeSantis’ numbers as low as possible as a warning to others.

BTW, what people say often is not what they meant. However, how it is heard by others can be very damaging. Trump has said a multitude of things that not only were misinterpreted, but also modified or taken out of context to create the desired narrative. His Charlottesville comments, for instance, were totally manipulated to sound like he supported white supremacy. His J6 speech had phrases omitted asking people to walk “peacefully & patriotically” to the Capitol building. When he responded to the riot evolving from the protest, trying to calm people down and go home, the press literally took it off the air. I think these were far more egregious than accurately quoting RDS’s interview statements, and then whining that people are lying when they were taken negatively because his comments were poorly thought out and stated.

It relies upon the fact that a significant portion of the discovery materials were available to Trump because they came from Trump, Trump, Inc., etc.

That’s not what “effective representation” involves.

It is irrelevant that the defendant himself knew of the discovery — the question is what time does Counsel need and there is no suggestion that Trump’s counsel knew of or had access to this information in discovery.

No. They will all come to federal court or none will come to federal court. It is a question of jurisdiction over the case, not jurisdiction over particular defendants.

There are multiple defendants who will likely assert immunity from state prosecution under a variety of theories, and they are all likely to win.

But even if they do not win in the district court, that is an appealable order to the 11th Circuit.

Mine you, she has made a name for herself researching the Pfizer clinical trials, being in the forefront of recognizing all the harms the COVID vaccine has caused. She also is a democrat who couldn’t stand Trump, saying her only reason for going was for journalistic purposes. However, her read on Trump significantly changed once she saw and heard him for herself. She called her original opinion was more an indoctrination by the press and others. While she still had differences regarding his style she no longer hated him. I think this may be the case for many, where their image of him is created thru the eyes and words of the media, and those who simply resent his popularity among the people.

    – Harsh, but true. The Republican Party, as a functioning political operation organized around winning, really doesn’t exist anymore. With Ronna McDaniel at the helm, it just functions as a pro-Trump super pac and that’s what the base voters want.

It will probably take a decade or so after Trump has left the scene to get the party back to a credible political organization that nominates electable candidates across the board.

I didn’t support him for the nomination in 2016 and I don’t support him for the nomination now. In my view Trump is not a conservative, he is an opportunist posing as one when convenient. Those two opinions alone should put to rest any idea that makes me a “Trump supporter”.

I give Trump his due where I think he did good things as President: judicial appointments, war on the MSM and wokeness, energy independence, lower taxes, deregulation, strong military. I think he was wrongly targeted while President, I think both impeachment efforts were trash, and I think EVERY charge against him now is politically motivated garbage.

I have serious difference with his AFL-CIO agenda trade policies, his big government spending, some of his isolationist foreign policy ideas including his baseless attacks on NATO, his insistence on a physical border wall across the entire border, his self defeating attacks on people he needed as allies, and many of his appointments to cabinet and other positions. I think he is the wrong person to be the face of the R party moving forward, I think he is too old to be President and has too much baggage to be effective even if he did win.

I will certainly vote for him if he is the nominee, but that hardly makes me “devoted to Trump” as Amoral Scumbag lies above.

So Amoral Scumbag can take his “Trump worship” BS and GFH.

I know this is a terribly difficult concept for a moron like you to grasp, but it is entirely possible to support a candidate (even one with whom you don’t always agree) and still be critical of the way in which that person runs the race. I support DeSantis and will vote for him if the race is still a competitive one when the primary reaches my state in May 2024.

However, DeSantis has run a terrible campaign up to this point. His campaign launch on Twitter Spaces was an embarrassment and he’s already had to fire his campaign manager and about a third of his staff. No one knows what his message is and no one knows what his forward-looking agenda is.

Since he entered the race, DeSantis has lost ground to Trump. Maybe you think that’s the sign of good campaign, but I don’t and that’s why he’s flagging in the polls and could be down and out if his debate performance isn’t good.

3-5-22 he predicted the war would be over within 10 days

9-12-22 he said Ukrainians are “desperate” and “war may be over soon”

Starting to think he might not know what he’s talking about… ”

Putin’s trolls have been out in force recently, and that is probably a good sign. Netherlands and Denmark are giving Ukraine F-16 fighter jets; pilots are being trained. The rumblings are some experienced pilots have volunteered from foreign countries.

    Donald Trump, 41% favorable vs. 55% unfavorable, and Joe Biden 41% favorable vs. 57% unfavorable, were about tied;

Kamala Harris was 38% favorable vs. 53% unfavorable; and Ron DeSantis was at 37% favorable vs. 48% unfavorable.
