You have a good core group now. I believe gradually your likely to see more former HHR posters post on this blog, particularly as the election approaches.

They can obtain the link off the now closed HHR board, which is still up online.

  4. The comment below was also posted as the last one on the prior thread. I’m off to the movies now to see “Sound of Freedom.” The movie was rejected, back in 2018, by all major movie companies because it’s content was deemed too unpopular with the public.
However, its producers persevered, and by appealing to the pubic (not the establishment corporate producers), they managed to get it on almost 2000 screens for a July 4th opening. It grossed enough to cover most of the costs incurred in making it, and are projected to make more this weekend. I will be contributing to their well deserved profits. In some ways I see this as analogous to what is posted below.

I believe we are at a crucial turning point in our history of being a sovereign nation. It’s obvious the window of our freedoms, ability to speak our minds, school and raise our own children is being strong-armed and closing. In most great struggles of the past leaders were chosen not for their political correctness and polite mannerisms, but for their verve and fortitude to do the right thing. Now is no different in that it’s going to take someone stubborn and coarse enough, to withstand and not whither, under the left’s barrage of grief they will throw at him. I’m increasingly thinking Trump, by far (if they don’t jail him first), fits that description more than any other candidate in the field thus far.

As I said in the last thread: I’m not sure demented Joe can afford to “lose” another war because the talking point might become he screwed up Ukraine and Afghanistan both.

Hence it makes sense that Joe will want to keep the Ukraine war going strong through the 2024 election and into 2025 when he could eventually wind it down with a peace treaty.

  9. It used to be that famous stars and performers mostly just STFU about national issues .

But today, which is true concerning famous movie stars, musicians, singers, TV stars, etc. who get involved in politics and endorsing candidates?

    A. These people become rich and famous and are dogged constantly by “the press”. for interviews. So they begin to opine and wax rhetorically about fields and subjects on which they know absolutely nothing and have no expertise like abortion, economy, foreign affairs, government spending, inflation, voting laws, tax policy, illegal immigration issues, environmental ‘issues’ and endorse various causes and political candidates. And then that info is transmitted to the rest of America.

    OR —————————————————————————-

    B. the adoring fans of the rich and famous movie stars contact the stars and say: “Hey I loved you work (acting, music, singing, etc.) and you are REALLY, REALLY good at that. I am a 18-35 year- old American who has very limited knowledge of current issues and government and history and geography, economics, etc., etc. and–while I know you also possess nothing more than a superficial knowledge (at best) of these weighty issues–I wonder if you could give me guidance on who to vote for in the upcoming election for X, Y and Z. I am too busy/lazy
to research the issues and form an educated opinion of my own concerning the issues and candidates. Could you help me out by issuing a press release or doing an interview with Hollywood media outlets and tell me what issues you support or oppose (BLM, SCOTU opinions, border security issues, drug policy, etc. etc. etc.) and which candidates you like or don’t like? You do not have to give any reasons for your views. Because you are such a great performer, I feel certain that you also have a keen awareness and insight on how all these issues and candidates’ policy proposals impact me and my $35,000 job.”

I’m on a number of group chats, email lists, etc., and all of them are dealing with ongoing threads of frustration about the DeSantis campaign. The perception is settling in that something needs to happen, but everyone has a different opinion on what to do.

    – It sucks that DeSantis’ campaign has flatlined so badly, but it’s good that conservative voices like Erick Erickson are willing to openly discuss the need for some sort of course correction. Hopefully, seeing outside supporters making comments like this will cause DeSantis and his wife (his top advisor) to make some changes while there’s still plenty of time.

One thing DeSantis could definitely use is his own version of Lee Atwater or Karl Rove, a strategist. That person may not exist, though. Regardless, DeSantis needs a skilled strategist to message his campaign. The woman serving as his campaign manager is a nuts-and-bolts, day-to-day operation type of person, not a vision person.

If DeSantis stays on the same course, he’ll lose and lose badly so there’s really no harm in exploring a different way. My advice would be to run as a conservative Republican as existed in 2014, not as a more conservative, less abrasive version of Trump. That’s not working. Kemp, Reynolds, and Youngkin all ran in that manner and won. DeSantis did in 2022 as well. But for whatever reason, DeSantis seems to be running a replay of Cruz’s 2016 campaign.

For whatever reason though, Republicans have forgotten how to persuade voters and make to them move their way. Trump certainly did that in Summer 2015 and it worked. But since 2015, Republicans have basically decided that it’s better to just follow the base rather than try and lead the base to a different view. This seems to be the strategy DeSantis, Haley, Scott, and Pence have adopted in hopes they’ll be a suitable landing spot for Trump falls apart. Well, he won’t.

Six months until Iowa is a long time, but it’s getting late early. If DeSantis is serious about winning, he’s going to have to adjust. It’s that simple. That doesn’t mean lobbing MSNBC style attacks at Trump, but what he’s been doing hasn’t worked at all.

However, one of the reasons we are sending these monstrous armaments to Ukraine is because we are running out of our own ammunition stockpiles. Supposedly, even after cluster bombs explode they pose a danger to civilian lives. So, let’s just keep the killing fields fertile with more bodies by applying even a deadlier round of weapons. For me, that makes no sense, especially when there are rumors of secret peace talks taking place on the side.

No matter how one feels about this man, though, he is a political phenomenon who rarely comes around the national stage anymore. Trump’s public engagement is probably what sets him apart the most from DeSantis. He simply likes mingling with the common guy, whether it’s in a huge stadium, a pizza parlor, or pulling off the side of the road to shake hands with people. After his Nevada speech he walked into the UFC 290, packed with people, who gave him an enthusiastic welcome. Joe Rogan was there, and there is talk he will be doing an interview with Trump on his popular podcast. All the money and billionaires in the world can’t give you this type of spontaneous, warmly experienced exposure – not even the $150 million DeSantis has on hand from billionaires to spend on his campaign.

Furthermore, most of DeSantis’s policies are basically warmed-up Trump policies, whether it involves the border, administrative state, education, or foreign policy. Another article’s observation was that people are not interested in “Trump lite,” but want the real deal. These are obstacles DeSantis has to recognize and then overcome, hopefully by not simply changing some states electoral rules which would only advantage him.

Like you mentioned, though, to accomplish certain policy changes, one has to have the authority, and I might add Congressional support, to make promises reality. The EO can accomplish much (as was seen by Biden’s rule), but it is only a transitory fix and can be reversed by the next administration. If RDS doesn’t get the right balance in Congress you may be disappointed in his accomplishments as well.

Although Trump did have an R Congress for his first two years, it was composed of anti-Trumpers who opposed many of his policy changes just because it was him proposing them. Maybe because DeSantis is more establishment friendly, he would have a less divisive time with such a Congress.

  84. I don’t think there are Putin appeasers here. There are simply people who specifically disagree with Biden’s haphazard policy of sending an indeterminate amount of aid and munitions to Ukraine, while depriving people here of a safe border continuously being violated by unvetted people from around the world. Hundreds of people on the terrorist list have been caught under Biden’s lax border policies. However, no one really knows how many got away. In many people’s estimation we are fueling the next 911 event with our poor monitoring of a porous border.

Furthermore, Russia having cluster bombs and using them does not justify or exonerate another country from doing the same thing. Bad and horrific remains bad and horrific. Ukraine using this weaponry only makes them as despicable as Russia using them, as well as the U.S. for supplying them to Ukraine.

Also, SDC, in lieu of people seemingly oblivious towards growing problems here in the states, there are still some engaged and willing to focus on domestic issues and invasions rather than ongoing wars abroad, 24/7. I call such people “American caretakers,” rather than disingenuously labeling them “Putin appeasers.”

I disagree that Ukraine should not use cluster bombs in its defense, focused on military targets, after 500 days of the Russians using them. The Russians have been intentionally bombing civilian targets in Ukraine. Indiscriminately killing civilians, including children. To say that Ukraine using cluster bombs against Russian military targets is as despicable as the Russians indiscriminately using them to bomb cities and civilian targets is absurd.

Russia has always been noted for being an evil empire, with no regard for human life. I expect more, though, from the U.S. in how it arms itself or others, when considering the long term effects of collateral damage. I don’t see how anyone could sanction such brutal warfare! 130. I agree with this take from Shapiro.

Western policy in Ukraine is incoherent, if not outright dangerous. We keep hearing our leaders repeating two phrases: “as long as it takes” and “until Ukraine wins.” The problem is that both are lies, and we all know it.

“As long as it takes” is always a lie in a democracy. See Afghanistan. See Iraq. There will be an end to support, and it generally will come at the worst possible time.

“Until Ukraine wins” is a lie simply because nobody is giving a definition of winning. If by “winning” we use Zelenskyy’s definition — winning back all of Crimea and Donbas — literally no one, including Zelenskyy, thinks that is going to happen.

If by “winning,” we mean that Ukraine preserves her sovereignty, that would provide an off-ramp: the West could and should cut a deal with Russia that grants control of Crimea and parts of Donbas to Russia; the West should give security guarantees, perhaps including NATO membership, to Ukraine. After all, the US has already achieved its objectives: destroying the Russian military, crushing the Russian economy, downgrading the power of a Chinese ally, and showing the Chinese that we will bring power to bear against aggression.

Such a deal would also give Zelenskyy an offramp with his own people: he’d be able to blame the West for forcing him to give away territory, which would allow him to retain his leadership position.

But that would be “our” definition of winning, which Biden has specifically forbidden. So we’re now in the catch-22 of saying that we’ll support Zelenskyy’s untenable “win everything” war and that we will also only admit Zelenskyy to NATO once the war has ended — creating an incentive for both Zelenskyy and Putin to continue the war.

Zzzzzz…… Putin already had control over Crimea and “parts of the Donbas”.

So he loses 100k troops dead + another 200k injured plus tens of billions in military equipment + economic hardship in Russia + Ukraine now joins NATO in order to have exactly the same thing he had before.

DeSantis needs to tell voters why they should support him. He needs to provide his vision for the country. Honestly, I don’t really know what DeSantis’ core campaign theme is and that’s a big problem for him. Obama was “change you can believe in” and Trump was “MAGA”. DeSantis is ….?

Again, as much as 65% of the party has shown interest in moving on from Trump. They may not all abandon him, but they’re open to it. They’re not the populists who only showed up for Trump. They’re, by in large, the group who propelled the party to huge wins in 2014. They’re mostly people who just consider themselves Republicans. That’s who DeSantis needs to speak to.

DeSantis doesn’t need to run a GWB 2004 or a Romney 2012 campaign, but he needs to realize the people who voted for both of those candidates still make up a broad swath of the party and are open to a more traditional Republican primary message. Low taxes, smaller government, strong national defense, and a culture of life/traditional values. Even if that group is just 40% of the party, it might be enough in the early states to win.

One thing DeSantis should absolutely do is embrace support for Ukraine. He really started his downtrend when he made those stupid comments to pro-Putin Tucker about Ukraine back in March. And let’s be honest, he made those comments just to make Tucker happy.

Yep, and his “vision” better be “I am a better Trump than can win”. He needs to be clear he agrees with a lot of what Trump did while President but that HE is the guy who can build on it, because he can win and Trump can’t.

If his vision is “I am a country club Republican and the anti-Trump” he will be a footnote in history.

A shame too, if he implodes a la Jeb. Because contrary to Jeb, he is actually competent and prepared to be President and he can represent the future of the GOP instead of a tired old pandering hack like Jeb.

As far as Ukraine goes, nobody supports Ukraine more than I do. We basically have no ammunition (Biden confirmed this in a slip of the tongue), our stinger missiles have been depleted and the people with capability to produce more have been pulled out of retirement, as no one else knows how to construct the nose of this missile. The industrial complex to manufacture more armaments has been mostly off shored to China. Coal powered plants capable of making the steel for said weapons have been offed by environmental demands. Finally, if we wanted to manufacture our own weaponry it would take 5 years to build such a facility. IOW, we are as vulnerable as we’ve ever been because of stupid mistakes made by our government in having no long range planning in place for the well being of our own Country.

The Russians have more casualties in 15 months than the US had in Vietnam in 10+ years, even considering Vietnam was a much bigger operation involving over half a million troops over several years. Given that the Russians started with 200k troops and then conscripted another 300k, 125k casualties that cannot return to the battlefield is a 25% casualty rate. Even if you only count dead, the 50k number is 10% of the available force. In Vietnam less than 2% of the contingent involved was killed, about 55k out of 3 million.

“A joint investigation carried out by two media organizations and a professor at a German university has offered what may be the most accurate estimate yet of the number of Russians killed and injured in the first 15 months of the war in Ukraine.

Analyzing existing reports about published obituaries, mortality data from the Federal State Statistics Service, and extensive records from the National Probate Registry, we estimate that between 40,000 and 55,000 Russian men under the age of 50 died fighting in Ukraine by May 27, 2023. When factoring in the number of men wounded so seriously that they did not return to military service, Russia’s total casualty count rises to at least 125,000 soldiers, based on our calculations. (This figure does not include missing or captured soldiers or Ukrainian nationals fighting with Russian proxy forces based in Donetsk and Luhansk.)”

Zelensky may have protested, but he knows he got what Ukraine wanted. NATO cannot make Ukraine a member with an active war going on. Once there is a settlement, Ukraine is in NATO.

The NATO summit was a disaster for Putin. Sweden joins Finland as a NATO member. Turkiye has turned on Putin.

A Ukrainian blogger summarized the last 500 days.

    “Anton Gerashenko

It seemed improbable to the rest of the world 500 days ago.

Last February, Western researchers gave Ukraine only 3 days in a confrontation with Russia in a full-scale war. But we survived and have been fighting for freedom and independence for more than 500 days now.

I wanted to remind us all of some fait accomplis that many people (to be honest, Ukrainians, as well!) would have found hard to believe in the beginning of the full-scale invasion.

🇺🇦 Ukraine has applied for EU membership and received candidate status.

🇺🇦 Ukraine did not lose any regional capitals, de-occupied its territories and liberated Kherson.

🇺🇦 Ukrainians received almost the entire range of Western weaponry: from Stingers to HIMARS, Leopards and other tanks, long-range missiles. F-16s and ATACMS are ahead.

🇷🇺 Russian ruble first devalued to 150 per dollar, then puffed back to 50, only to fall back to almost 100.

🇷🇺 Russia received more sanctions than Iran and North Korea combined.

    🇺🇦 Ukrainians sank the “Moskva”.

🇺🇦 Ukrainians inflicted the largest losses in history on an enemy flotilla without taking their own ships out of their ports at all.

🇺🇦 Ukrainians put the Kerch bridge out of action. It took the invaders six months to fix it.

🇺🇦 Ukrainians experienced the longest blackout in Europe.

🇺🇦 Ukraine greatly increased consumption of electricity from alternative sources.

🇺🇦 Ukraine learned how to shoot down “Kinzhal” and “Inskander” missiles, which no one had done before and which were believed to be impossible to shoot down.

🇷🇺 An international arrest warrant was issued for Putin. He dug himself even deeper into his bunker and increased his staff of doubles.

🇷🇺 Russian parade for 9 May on Red Square in Moscow was held with 1 tank.

🇷🇺 Russian unidentified drones have been destroying targets all over European part of Russia, and even striking the Kremlin.

🇷🇺 Russian volunteer forces are liberating Russian settlements and showing that the Russian “border is open”.

🇺🇦 Patriots and other air defense systems are protecting the skies above Kyiv.

🇺🇦 There are more trenches than holidaymakers in occupied Crimea.

🇷🇺 Russia experienced its first attempt at an armed rebellion – Moscow has dangled on the brink of regime change.

🇷🇺 The most combat-ready group of the enemy – Wagner PMC – is withdrawn from the battlefield for good.

🇺🇦 Ukraine now has more tanks in service than Russia.

He was even booed at an election function in Iowa when his name was brought up. IMO, his biggest problem is his lack of personable behavior. This coming weekend all candidates were invited to speak at the biggest summer TPUSA event in Florida, a gathering of grass roots, mainly youth. DeSantis declined the invitation, maybe because FOX has turned its back on the populous wing of the R party, telling all their employees they couldn’t attend this event. Since FOX is endorsing DeSantis, he has become basically an employee of their’s, following Murdock’s requests.

Now, there seems to be a retooling of his campaign, putting some of his staffers in the background and giving his wife, Casey, a higher profile and voice. DeSantis is also being called to the Hamptons to meet with his donors to explain the state of his campaign. Things can change, and the tide could turn. However, I think DeSantis needs to depend more on himself to get out there in as many public places as possible, leaving consultants and even his wife more in the back seat.

This does not in any way exclude the suburbs but the traditional winning coalition for Rs (suburban + rural vs urban + blue collar + minority) no longer exists. – A couple of thoughts.

    1. Talk about Youngkin has everything to do with DeSantis’ flagging prospects.
    2. If he wants to run, time’s a wasting. He probably has until September to enter.
    3. He is precisely the kind of candidate pre-Trump Republicans would support.
    4. He would be a great fundraiser and probably get a lot of the Romney donor network.

That said, I have seen no evidence Youngkin is serious about running. Yes, whispers have suggested he might try and do so after Virginia’s elections, but November would be too late. He would have already missed ballot access in several states so that’s a nonstarter.

I do, however, think, if Youngkin wants to run, now is his time. His name is hot and the issues that propelled him to the governorship are the ones that continue to dominate the party. I think he would have a much easier time attracting the 60% to 65% of the party that’s open to moving on from Trump. I can’t see him wasting his time trying to get to the right of Trump like DeSantis has.

Also in favor of a run is the fact that Youngkin is term limited. In 2028, he’ll have been out of the governor’s office for three years. And without a Senate seat that’s prime for the taking, the only option is probably to run now. If he waits, his moment will almost certainly have passed just as Christie found out in 2016.

I would gladly and eagerly support Youngkin just as I do DeSantis, Scott, Pence, and Haley. I want someone who can beat Trump. I don’t know if Youngkin can, though. Like the others, he would have to be willing to confront Trump on the issues. I don’t know if he would.

    DeSantis’ ill-conceived strategy”

    And so it starts…

    – You’ve never been able to accept that supporters can still be critical of their preferred candidate’s decisions. Should I not criticize the coaches or the players of my favorites teams when they perform poorly?

And yes, it’s an ill-conceived strategy for DeSantis to try and get to Trump’s right. None of Trump’s supporters are ever going to break away from him so DeSantis is wasting his time courting people who will never vote for him.

The fertile ground for DeSantis is the 60% to 65% of the party that has shown an interest in moving past Trump. No one is speaking to this group, though. Not DeSantis, not Pence, not Scott, and not Haley.

The Golden Calf is not running to the “right of Trump”, he is running as a mainstream conservative.

    – DeSantis is not running as a mainstream conservative. Pence and Scott are, but DeSantis isn’t. He’s running as a populist hoping to pick off Trump supporters. There’s a huge difference. He has made no effort to court the other 60% to 65% of the party. Everything is “Trump was really good, but I can do it better”. Well, why buy new coke when I can have the original?

Right now, DeSantis is serving as a “parking lot” for Republicans who want to move on from Trump, but aren’t sure where to go. Many of his supporters, like me, believe he has the best chance to stop Trump, but can switch to another candidate if that person provides a legitimate, viable alternative.

The reason DeSantis hasn’t grown his vote share is he’s not speaking to a broad swath of the party. And it’s for that reason why Youngkin’s name gets tossed around from time to time as well as Kemp’s name.

    Like

  313. A whole bunch of people, both in the field, and not currently in the field, have more growth potential than DeSantis. Any anti-Trump Republican thinking DeSantis is their savior is wasting their time. As you have pointed out, his plan is to be more Trump than Trump.

Neither Trump nor DeSantis can win a general election. Honest people concede that about Trump and seem fine with that. If DeSantis were to be nominated, Trump would effectively endorse Biden out of spite, and thus DeSantis would do even worse in a general election loss than Trump would.

So, either something happens to allow someone else to break through, which right now seems unlikely, and Democrats get four more years, which is what MAGA really wants, because it allows them to complain about how horrible America is. That is the reality we live in. There is no universe where Ron DeSantis is going to be President.

  314. I think DeSantis could beat Biden, but your point about Trump is very fair. He would try and torpedo DeSantis, but I also think Trump would try and torpedo anyone else out of spite. And to be clear, he’ll do the same in 2028 since I think he’ll run again them as well. So might as well try and deal with him now.

I think DeSantis has a very small window to turn his campaign around, a month or two at the most, and it would almost certainly include major staff changes and bringing in people who have real experience in presidential campaigns. However, I don’t think DeSantis will change his staff. I think he thinks it would look weak.

That leaves someone like Youngkin deciding to run and jumping into the race. I don’t for a moment think it will happen, but Mid-October is the filing deadline for Nevada so there’s your drop-dead date for that kind of talk.

And even if Youngkin, as an example, did run, I think he’d run into the same problem the other candidates have had. I doubt he’d be willing to confront Trump in any substantive way. It’s possible Republicans won’t get a chance to nominate someone not named Trump until 2032.

The only thing that could possibly happen is that someone, for whatever reason, is jettisoned as a candidate and someone else either gets chosen on the convention floor or is picked by the RNC later on in the general election as a replacement candidate. All of this is what Tim Scott, for instance, is banking on. It is is complete rationale. That he gets turned to as the compromise candidate. You can have Youngkin and Kemp in the conversation at that point as well. They are not headed to Iowa or New Hampshire or South Carolina.

All of this is pretty unprecedented, but so is a de facto nominee that is almost certainly headed to prison and almost certainly will be seen as completely out of reach of winning a general election.

However, for his acolytes, they are fine with that. They are fine with losing. It’s what makes them pure. Winning is for suckers. They can just pretend it was stolen and say they won anyway. It makes things easier than actually winning.

It does not matter if we agree or not that Trump was really good, conservatives can disagree on that. I think he was really good on some things, really bad on others. On balance, he was a pretty good President. But we don’t need to agree on that to support the Golden Calf if the objective is to win in 2024.

There is little doubt that the vast majority of Rs approved of Trump as President, whether they liked his personality or not. That despite all the negative press he got and all the investigations.

So given that, there is very little upside in attacking Trump because the purpose of attacking a candidate is to drive up his negatives. Attack ads don’t actually help the attacking candidate but it does impact the recipient. Trump’s negatives are already factored into the electorate. The bogus charges had no impact on his polling, as I predicted btw.

That is why the Golden Calf’s strategy is to co-opt Trump supporters who see him as a continuation of Trump’s presidency, but without the baggage and with a greater change of winning.

Contrary to what Anonymous stated above, very few conservatives don’t want to win. That is garbage. That is his interpretation of people who support Trump because he hates Trump, but it is trash.

Trump voters want Trump and only Trump. It is a cult built around one man. Their support is not transferrable. If Trump goes away, those voters go away. It’s that simple. And those who aren’t for Trump have had a long chance to view DeSantis and have said, so far, no.

DeSantis is losing and losing badly precisely because he’s running as a Trump clone. That is the best evidence a sizable chunk of the party is ready to move past Trump. Why? Because they are choosing not to support Trump and not support someone running as a better version of Trump.

Bloomberg continues in reference to Zelensky: “He had, after all, been given a renewed commitment to eventual membership and new security guarantees from the Group of Seven nations. By the next day, the message appeared to be sinking in.” The publication was privy to some key Western leaders’ exact words, presenting the rare dressing down as follows [emphasis ZH]:

“Whether we like it or not, people want to see gratitude,” UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace told reporters the following morning. “You’re persuading countries to give up their stock” of weapons and ammunition, he added.

Zelensky may be overplaying his hand. While he petulantly teased he might not even attend the NATO meeting, he actually got there a day early, and then proceeded to trash leaders for not giving him a timeline to join the alliance. His rant did not go over well, and as some analysts are saying, this could be a flexion point in countries giving Zelensky so much, even bleeding their own munitions stockpiles to make him happy.

What say the TDS morons? Less than 1/3 of R voters think Trump is not the strongest candidate despite all the negative press, bogus indictments, etc.

This alone should convince anyone with half a brain that attacking and calling over half the R voters “disgusting” and other names is not going to win anybody the nomination or the GE.

The goal should be to get a majority of GOP voters to believe Trump is NOT the best candidate. Insulting them is not going to do that. Attacking Trump is not going to do that, they have heard it all.

The only way that can happen is to convince them someone else can accomplish whatever they think Trump can, do it better AND win.

    – I’m not expecting a former House Freedom Caucus member to embrace John McCain’s foreign policy views, but it’s still disappointing to see DeSantis take this position. Carr is a pro-Trump radio host in Boston and this yet another example of DeSantis feeling obligated to either get to Trump’s right or hug Trump’s views.

Is it a pander? Probably, but, even if it isn’t, it’s still a disappointment and a missed opportunity for DeSantis to distinguish himself from Trump. Support for democracies and/or efforts to stymie the Soviet Union/Russia have long been a key part of Republican politics and I’m quite certain it remains an intrinsic part of most Republicans’ beliefs. Yet, no one who can win (Haley and Scott can’t) are making it an issue.

DeSantis isn’t going to win by claiming he’s Trump with smoother edges. If that was going to work, he wouldn’t be languishing in the polls. He doesn’t have to use MSNBC style talking points, but he does need to distinguish himself from Trump. So far, he hasn’t come close to doing so.

    – Driving up Trump’s negatives hasn’t helped DeSantis because DeSantis is not making Trump’s negatives an issue. In order for a candidate to capitalize on an opponent’s weaknesses, that candidate has to drive the issue home with voters through talking points and advertising. DeSantis just isn’t doing that and has shown no desire to do that either.

Politics is not osmosis where something just transfers over. We saw that in 2016 when the argument was repeatedly made if “so and so would just drop out, my choice would win”. Well, that was never going to happen because voters don’t move in blocks on their own. They have to be driven there by candidates. When Jeb quit in February 2016, his voters didn’t automatically go to Rubio like many hoped or thought. In fact, many went to Trump. Why? Because he made the case to them he should be their guy.

Trump’s negatives in the primary can go to 90%, but if no one wants to make his negatives an issue, then they won’t matter.

Zelensky is happy about the actual outcome Vilnius summit. As he should be. It was a very good outcome for him.

“We are returning home with a good result for our country, and very importantly, for our warriors. A good reinforcement with weapons.

It is very important: for the first time since independence, we have formed a security foundation for Ukraine on its way to NATO. These are concrete security guarantees that are confirmed by the top 7 democracies in the world. Never before have we had such a security foundation, and this is the level of the G7. On this foundation, we will build a new, legally binding architecture of bilateral security treaties with the most powerful countries.

Very importantly, during these two days of the Summit, we have put to rest any doubts and ambiguities about whether Ukraine will be in NATO. It will! For the first time, not only do all Allies agree on this, but a significant majority in the Alliance is vigorously pushing for it. Never before have the words “you are equal among equals” for Ukraine from other NATO members sounded truly meaningful. Now everyone understands that this is a fact. Equal among equals. And we will definitely reaffirm this fact with our victory. And with our accession to NATO.

Previously, Russia’s rulers wanted to have their own fence in front of NATO’s door. We have left this Russian ambition on the margins of European history – behind the fence of our unity in Europe and, more broadly, in the free world.

I am grateful to all those who have worked for unity in Vilnius now!”

They won’t matter anyway. Look at the poll above. 55% of Rs think Trump is the strongest candidate for the GE despite all the negative 24/7 attacks on him and all the bogus indictments. Why? Because they liked him as President. Unless someone convinces them there is a better option, that won’t change. I think Trump was a good President. The fact he now takes what I consider an unacceptable position of Ukraine does not change that.

Driving up another candidate’s negatives doesn’t help the attacking candidate. That is Politics 101. Trump’s negatives are known to every R in America. Most think the positives outweigh the negatives, including me. I don’t support him because I think there is a better candidate that can win. I am never going to be convinced by TDS morons, the DOJ and the MSM that Trump was not a good President and that the impeachments and charges against him aren’t politically motivated trash.

The Golden Calf would be committing political suicide if his campaign was about Trump instead of about him. His challenge is to remain as the front running alternative to Trump so he continues to be well funded and to make his case on why he can be, as JeffP put it, an “upgraded Trump”. If he gets to the convention in 2nd place with Trump having only a plurality of delegates he can be the nominee.

    – And what did the polls say about Jeb and Trump in late June 2015? They said Jeb was one of the strongest and Trump would be one of the weakest. Yet, Trump went hard after his opponents and caused voters to change their minds about Jeb, Carson, Rubio, Cruz, and the rest. Polls change. Otherwise, Hillary would’ve beaten Obama and Hillary would’ve crushed Bernie early in the process in 2016.

There’s not a single instance in which a coordinated and sustained negative ad campaign hasn’t worked. Negative ads and negative campaigning work every time they are tried. The problem in 2015/16 is none of the candidates took Trump seriously until it was too late (March 2016) and now none of them have the stomach to even try.

If a candidate, any candidate, had $100 million to spend on negative ads in the first three states (IA, NH, SC) and on FoxNews for the next five months, Trump’s pool numbers would go down and his negative ratings would go up. They just would because only about 35% is “ride or die” with conman Donnie. The rest can be persuaded to go elsewhere because they were thinking about going elsewhere in the early part of 2023.

Tucker: “I’m sorry, Mr. Vice President. You are distressed that the Ukrainians don’t have enough American tanks? Every city in the United States has become much worse over the past three years. Drive around. There’s not one city that’s gotten better. And it’s visible. Our economy has degraded, the suicide rate has jumped, public filth, and disorder and crime have exponentionally increased and yet your concern is that the Ukrainians, a country most people can’t find on a map, don’t have enough tanks? I think it’s a fair question to ask: Where’s the concern for the United States in that?”

Then Biden called for giving funding to Ukraine’s war effort, asserting he would never allow US ground troops to be in Ukraine. This funding includes paying the pensions of Ukrainian government officials.

Eventually more and more sophisticated armaments and equipment have been dispatched to Ukraine. The list includes Sherman Tanks, numerous special forces, F16s, long range missiles, cluster bombs banned by allies of ours, like the UK, and the latest, Biden’s permission to mobilize 3000 reserve troops to lend a helping hand. This is an incremental pattern of involvement reminiscent of the build-up to the Viet Nam war. Finally, with US military recruitment on the decline I wonder how long it will take to bring back the draft for the sake of defending Ukraine – a draft calling up both young men and women to actively and involuntarily engage in another country’s war effort?

Of course, the likelihood of a new cold war and actual involvement of US troops would INCREASE if Putin is given free reign on his vision of a new USSR/Greater Russia. THAT would put more Americans at risk.

Right now we should worry about getting enough sophisticated equipment to Ukraine so they can fight off the Russians themselves.

This is a lot cheaper in cost and American lives than the alternative.

British intelligence in the dock for CIA torture.

Unfortunately for the US, Bush will probably be old and dead by the time we get around to prosecuting the Bush-Cheney regime.

“Recent developments raise the prospect that British intelligence agents could finally face justice for their little-known role in the CIA’s global torture program.”

British intelligence in the dock for CIA torture

“Lawyers for al-Hawsawi say they have proof that British intelligence agents illegally “aided, abetted, encouraged, facilitated, procured and/or conspired” with the US to torture and abuse their client.

Al-Hawsawi is one of just five remaining Guantanamo detainees to have been charged over alleged involvement in the 9/11 attacks.

According to the declassified summary of the US Senate report into CIA torture, al-Hawsawi was one of several prisoners held and abused “despite doubts and questions surrounding their knowledge of terrorist threats and the location of senior al-Qaeda leadership.”

His lawyers say there’s “credible evidence” that Britain’s MI5 and MI6 provided questions for his American torturers to ask, and were passed along information obtained during the so-called ‘enhanced interrogation’ sessions.”

However, I think it was DeSantis who made the most headway in his responses to Tucker. He did not falter or flinch in answering every question, especially the controversial ones involving domestic policy ie gender, school curriculum, the southern border. He walked a finer line dealing with Ukraine, but nevertheless seemed to support holding a firmer line on how much aid we should give, questioning ( like I do) why we should care more about that border than our own southern border. It was a good presentation by DeSantis, a home run in the estimation of analysts scrutinizing all the performances of the candidates who attended this venue.
Pence, OTOH, outed himself as an undesirable choice, blowing up his campaign by today’s pathetic responses.

  528. Okay first official event today in Iowa. Watched interviews between lunch, a client no show and drive home. This is my take and how I see things.

    1. DeSantis is most prepared to lead and was enthusiastically made his case on policy and what his priorities are. He is solid…intelligent, nerdy in a good way and well spoken versus charismatic. He is a fighter and shows emotion, genuinely and appropriately. Definitely a Trump upgrade. You can see his passion for some issues in how communicates. He understands what being an administrator is all about. He has a stellar record of service to this country and the state of Florida as Governor as proof. He addresses my greatest concern… woke culture in schools and business, CRT, pro life, government corruption, CBDC, China, and the list goes on. Tucker said amen about a half dozen times. Someone I would gladly vote for.

    2. Vivek…I like a lot. He is intelligent and an excellent communicator. Has some charisma but doesn’t have the experience yet to govern. I like his approach to look below the surface regarding issues and solving problems. He does come across as a salesman sometimes. But would vote for him over Trump. Tucker gave him the floor to campaign speech a couple times. You can tell Tucker liked him too.

    3. Haley was an empty pant suit and Tucker was easiest on her. She seems fake to me.

    4. Pence is done, Asa is done. It was bad for them.

5.:Scott was disappointing. Nothing really stuck out.

    6. Mr cult of personality Trump was a no show. Which I think hurt him at least
in Iowa. There are many things Trump did as President that I greatly appreciated up until 2020. I understand the loyalty people feel after all the persecution and political assassination attempts he has faced. He is talking more BS than 2016 and his baseless attacks on DeSantis & Reynolds are repulsive to me. Ultimately I just cannot see him being elected in a general and I think he is being used as controlled opposition for another election cycle. But I would vote for him one more time if he makes it that far … which I doubt.

Ultimately the GOP nomination comes down to loyalty for the charismatic persecuted Trump or the more solid young fighter for freedom. I don’t think anyone else has a chance. Vivek could play spoiler for DeSantis if he continues to gain support.
