    Come visit…

    HARPERS FERRY and all its beauty and history. As you walk thebstreets you will wall past the building rhst housed the pharmacy where my ancestor had a drug store. I will personally take you on a guided tour of Virginus Island (at Harpers Ferry) and tell you all about the thriving community was there, the Shenandoah canal where another of my ancestors fell in at night and drowned.

    HITORIC SHEPHERDSTOWN where my grandfather lived when he taught at Shepherd College. See the Runsey monument, the railroad Bridge over the Potomac where I and a friend walked one night and got caught on the bridge when 4 trains passed that night. Stop at Morgans Grove where the Bee Libe March began and which isbthe birthplace of the U.S. Army. See the college campus and the historic downtown area of the town. Have some food at Betty’s Restaurant.

    LUNCH–at the 4 star Bavarian Inn in Shepherdstown overlooking the Potomac. German fare and crab cakes are ther specialties. You can also stay in one of the niche rooms there.

    C & O CANAL…where the Pennsyvania Corn Brigade was cut to pieces in the Civil War when they crossed the river chasing alee after the battle of Antietam

    On to SHARPSBURG–first stop will be Nutter’s Ice Cream. Read the historic marker about Gen. Braddock coming through here.

    Then on to the nearby Antietam Battlefield and tour there including Burnside Bridge.

    Back to WV to stop by my house for light refreshments and drinks on my deck. Tour the wife’s flower flower gardens. See the 1815 stone Bridge over the Opequon Creek as you tropical where George Washington rode.

    MARTINSBURG– sight of theb1877 railroad strike, tour the roundhouse there (one of the few RR roundhouse still standing). Visit the Adam Stephen home (REV. WAR GENERAL and founder of Martinsburg). See other sites of Martinsburg like the courthouse, Belle Boyd House, and Boydville, the Boarman House (U.S. Admiral), etc.

    CHARLES TOWN–see some of the Washington homes and Washington graves in the cemetery (more Washingron Graves and homes in this county than anywhere else in the U.S.). See the court house where John Brown was tried and the site where he was hanged, plus donthe museum in the basement of the library. Go to the Charles Town Race ticket for horse racing and casino gambling.

    On to HEDGESVILLE–where Washington stopped and slept and worshiped. And the birthplace of me and where I grew up. Then on to..

    BERKELEY SPRINGS where Washington visited and bathed in thw mineral springs there. See the house where Amy college girl fried lived. Play golf or swim at the nearby Cacapon State Park.

    Optional trip is to go to the Paw Paw tunnel area of the C & O CANAL and walk through that as I yell you all about the constructuon of it.

    Come back to my house for liquid refreshment and where I will entertain you with my guitar playing and stores of my times in the WV legislature.

    Dang Walt, we made the drive from GA to NY about a dozen times when the kids were younger (2003-2016 ish). Going up/down I-81 was excruciatingly boring except for the few miles that we spent in MD and WV. One of those states had a Roy Rogers, which were basically gone. So we had to stop there every time because Roy Rogers was one of my favorite burgers joints growing up on NYC. You can add your own toppings and I had to load up on the onions. That was always the highlight of our long drive and I’m fairly certain it was in WV.

    No, I wasn’t intending to be sarcastic. That is literally what voters are doing. They are planning to vote Dem to bring gas prices down, despite the fact that Dems have a record of being at war against oil and want to eliminate the internal combustion engine. That is my point. Voters are NOT rational.

    Many MAGA voters want Trump to be a dictator and think that he can do it all on his own without congress, so why bother vote. Then they will be angry when the dem controlled congress stops him.

    But I hope they DON’T raise it because I think a lot of the inflation we are seeing is, to borrow from Biden, transient.

    High energy prices translate into higher prices for transportation and therefore along the entire supply chain, including food.

    Once the Iran war is over and the straight of Hormuz is either opened or rendered mostly irrelevant, inflation will come down.

    I followed the ‘Ghosts of Shepherdstown’ paranormal series on the Destination America cable channel for a couple of seasons about a decade ago. It was a case of local authorities (police) being overwhelmed with hauntings in the downtown area and called on ghost hunters or ghost busters to solve their scary situation.

    Folks can make a case for the rate hike, pause, or even a cut. It doesn’t really interest me much, I’m only interested in how the markets react and how I can make the most money as a result. The markets have always been manipulated and are speculative by nature, no big deal. That’s just how the system works.

    Remember it wasn’t that long ago that negative rates were considered a good thing, and now inflation is a good thing too. So confusing and entertaining when politics mixes with monetary policy, but whatevah.

    Big Joe Proud A-hole made the point that inflation is transient until it is not, which was certainly true under Biden. But the factors that made Biden’s inflation non-transient, primarily the “Inflation Reduction (not) Act” were much more permanent and reflected in the economy as a whole rather than one sector.

    Current inflation is primarily tariff and energy driven, both which can be reversed fairly quickly. I think the oil crisis will wane soon either because Hormuz will open or because it will be rendered more irrelevant with pipelines and other ways around it.

    Unfortunately, Trump probably won’t reverse the tariffs or end the stupid trade wars, so that factor probably IS permanent.

    Btw, if Rs lose the midterms, Trump will pretty much only have himself to blame. I support his action in Iran, the impact on energy prices could not be helped unless you wanted to see nuclear Iran and stronger Iranian proxies. But the stupid tariffs and trade wars were self inflicted damage.

    I would visit again. My wife would go back because she said she had clam chowder and amazing sour dough bread near Pike Market.

    Yes the rate hike seems to be driven by the tariffs and energy prices. If inflation is indeed transitory, then the factors that drove up inflation should be short-term and reversible. Tariffs are not going away, so that doesn’t look reversible. Energy prices are tied to Iran and well there’s plenty of uncertainty there. So Warsh and the Fed acted.     I personally see this as a non-event, and markets agree. A slight sell off leading into the announcement, then another minor sell-off after the announcement. No biggie, par for the course. Markets don’t like rate hikes, grass is green. There was buying pressure towards the close, we are headed to the end of year which is always positive, and then the 3rd year of a presidential term which historically is a great year to be long the market. 12 months from now, the same people who don’t like this cut will likely be praising it.

    Huh, no. Wrong interpretation.

    In my view, the rate hike was completely unjustified, and unfortunately it reflects politics rather than reason. Yes, Powell is gone but the new guy did not have the power yet to do what I think he really wanted to do which was no rate hike. It was too early for him to swim against the current. Powell may be gone, but the present composition of the Fed is still of the same ideological mold.

    But I agree that the people that LIKE this hike will still like it in a year. But not because it has any positive effect on the economy, it won’t, but because it was “anti-Trump”.

    That may very well be true, but it doesn’t seem to be a factor in the Fed’s decision. Gas prices have gone from an average of $2.98 in Feb to $4.37 today. Apparently the Fed has seen enough and it was time to act. Last meeting was the one where they decided to wait and see. This meeting they decided that they did not like what they were seeing.

    Sorry, that is not what Fed fiscal policy should be about, knee jerk reacting to short term events.

    The rise in oil prices has one cause, the Iran war. It is not due to some intrinsic issue as for example an oil producing shortage driven by higher demand or a natural disaster with long term effects.

    This rate hike was a political hit on Trump just like some of the rate cuts were designed to benefit Biden. It is basically Kabuki theater that will marginally impact the economy negatively while doing nothing to reduce inflation.

    I understand why Warsh chose not to die on this hill, there will be bigger fish to fry.

    Still, this rate hike was unwarranted and a mistake.
