“GREENBELT, Md. (AP) — A former senior adviser to infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci pleaded guilty Tuesday to plotting to conceal federal records related to research on the origins of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. David Morens is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 12 by U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis in Greenbelt, Maryland. Morens pleaded guilty to conspiring to defraud the U.S. government, a felony punishable by a maximum prison sentence of five years.

“By pleading guilty today, Dr. Morens has taken responsibility for what he did, and he will continue to do so,” defense attorney Tim Belevetz said in a statement after the plea hearing.

Morens is accused of using his private email account to intentionally circumvent public records laws while employed at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The Justice Department alleges that he concealed or destroyed records of discussions related to COVID-19 research grants, including an effort to revive a controversial coronavirus grant.”

  23. The strait is not closed. Iran can’t do that. What they can do and what they ARE doing is using the threat of attacks on shipping to increase the price of oil about $15 to $18 a barrel. They can attack just enough to give credibility to the threat. That’s their only card left to play, and they are playing it to the hilt. All designed to produce a Democratic Party takeover of Congress which nobody can argue that Democratic control of the legislative branch wouldn’t be good for Iran. In that respect, it’s certainly a leverage point in their favor. That’s where we are.

My criticism of Trump lies in the fact that he got played on the ridiculous MOU. They were NEVER serious about negotiating a settlement. It was nothing but scheme to buy breathing room for the bastards and it worked. It’s the same playbook they have played for 47 years. Trump should have known better. They got a break in the military pounding they were taking and an economic bonanza lifting of the blockade for a substantial period of time. It took the pressure off and they didn’t have to give up a thing. We got an empty promise that they’d negotiate a settlement and they didn’t even keep the promise of ending the attacks on shipping.

At least at this point Trump has finally come around to reality and the ridiculous proposition that “!ran badly wants a deal”

  24. What the bastards running Iran DO WANT is to stay in power. That’s their goal and they couldn’t give a shit on how much the people of Iran are suffering……at least past couldn’t care less as long as the economic pain doesn’t cause the people to rise up and remove them from power. That probably doesn’t happen. They have all the guns.

  25. Oh, and intermittent Iranian attacks on their neighbors and their oil infrastructures intimidates Kuwait, the Saudis etc from completely throwing in on the side of the USA. Don’t stop pressuring the US to “negotiate” are we will continue to hit your oil facilities. And of course, they don’t have any interest in a diplomatic solution or negotiating. The Iranians are nuts, and I’m glad Trump has finally started to grasp that fact. Please, no more lifting the pressure for empty promises, Mr President. At this point, we are past the point of bombing. That doesn’t work. and we’ve hit just about every military target we could have hit. Economic pressure to the max is about all we can do at this point. It will be a long road and we will have to endure the political consequences in November. Unfortunately, that is where we are.

  30. My criticism of Trump lies in the fact that he got played on the ridiculous MOU.”

    Zzzzz…..

Your criticism of Trump is that he is seeking a complex long term deal involving a lot of different parties and interests.

He never got played by anybody, If Trump trusted the Iranians one bit he wouldn’t have bombed their nuclear sites. Negotiations are difficult, not guaranteed, but if you want a long term solution to a 50 year problem and you want a nuclear free Iran and you want Iran to stop funding their proxies a bombing campaign alone will not achieve that.

Trump has followed a sensible carrot and stick approach. Maybe you think only the stick approach would work but you are not going to bomb your way to a settlement.

The fact is Trump’s strategy has already brought tremendous results. He has destroyed Iran’s navy and air force. He has severely downgraded their industrial capacity to produce offensive weapons. He has severely downgraded their nuclear capability. He has starved Iran’s capacity to fund Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis. He has united the UAE and the Saudis against Iran. He has effectively gained control of the Strait of Hormuz and relegated Iran’s influence to taking sporadic potshots at passing tankers. In the medium term, he has also gotten the Gulf States to seek alternatives to the Strait, such as pipelines to the Red Sea.

I think Trump’s strategy has been highly successful. Phil and CNN are free to disagree.

  32. Iran has run of of cards to play. They lost control of the strait. They lost their leverage on the Gulf States and Saudi Arabia and lost considerable influence in Lebanon. Hamas has been decimated. Their senior religious and military leadership was wiped out. Their economy is flat lining and their oil revenue has dwindled. Their international assets are frozen or not accessible for the most part. Their nuclear program is ruined. The old theory that Israel could not attack Iran with impunity because of opposition by the Abraham Accord countries and UAE and Saudis is proven wrong. Iran has no navy or air force.

The idea that Iran is “winning” might be popular with Phil, CNN and the Democrats, but it is a crock of crap.

    That is good news?

Something wrong with that stat, no way Biden’s inflation was lower than Trump’s.

Inflation during Joe Biden’s presidency (2021–2025) was defined by a historic post-pandemic surge, peaking at a 40-year high of 9.1% in June 2022 before cooling to roughly 3% by the time he left office. Over the entire four-year term, cumulative price increases totaled roughly 19% to 20%.

    • The Peak: Annual inflation hit 9.1% in June 2022, driven by global supply chain disruptions, post-lockdown demand surges, energy shocks from the war in Ukraine, and large federal spending packages like the American Rescue Plan.
    • The Cool-Down: Price growth slowed through 2023 and 2024, stabilizing closer to 3.0% by early 2025, though still remaining above the Federal Reserve’s ideal 2% target.
    • Overall Term Average: Year-over-year inflation averaged about 4.95% annually across Biden’s term, significantly higher than the averages seen in the preceding two decades.

In the background, the frustration of the Ukrainian people is bubbling up to the surface. In part because the hunters the Zelenskyy regime has hired to go find conscripts are now seen as living a life of indulgence.  The conscript hunters who take the men off the streets are earning $150k targeting their own people for forced military service. The people are furious.

Simultaneous to this public statement about elections released by Fedorov, the anti-corruptions agencies in Ukraine announced investigations directly related to Zelenskyy’s government itself.  It looks like Fedorov knew this was coming.”

  47. Speaking of conscription, you won’t hear little Putin toady Janzam say anything about this.

    • Coercion to Sign Contracts: Because conscript pay is virtually nonexistent, authorities frequently pressure draftees to sign official military contracts. Once signed, these contracts become indefinite, and the individuals can be deployed directly into active combat.
    • Year-Round Process: Laws enacted by the Russian State Duma transitioned the conscription apparatus into a permanent, year-round operation. This allows draft offices to issue summonses and conduct mandatory medical exams at any time of the year.
    • Strict Criminal Penalties: Evading the draft is a felony. It is punishable by steep fines or up to 26 months of imprisonment.
    • Civil Restrictions: The Russian Labour Code blocks male citizens aged 18 to 30 from formal employment unless they present valid military papers. This pushes draft evaders out of the legitimate job market and into a vulnerable shadow economy
    • Workplace Pressures: To minimize the political backlash of an overt, large-scale draft, the Kremlin utilizes “covert mobilization”. Regional decrees have forced medium and large businesses to select a quota of their own employees to sign military contracts, shifting the burden and community backlash onto enterprise managers.
    • Conscription in Occupied Territories: In temporarily occupied regions of Ukraine (such as Kherson), Russian occupation authorities have faced criminal investigations for orchestrating the illegal, forced conscription of local Ukrainian civilians into the Russian armed forces”
