Many years ago on the old HHR I posted the following about March Madness:
I finished working out a re-vamped NCAA men’s basketball tournament, that resolves all the problems people complain about. Here are some of the complaints:
1) The four ‘play-in’ teams seem an odd fit and unfair. All the other teams could win a national championship by winning 6 games in a row, but four teams are arbitrarily singled out for having to win 7 in a row.
2) With only four regions across the map, teams are routinely sent far and wide to balance out the brackets. These teams lose the chance for their fans to travel to watch them play because its too far.
3) Every year there are solid teams on the bubble that are left out. Just a few years ago a bubble team, Syracuse, barely made it in the tourney, and then they went on to the Final Four.
4) With the field limited to 68 teams, and the guarantee that every Div 1 conference gets at least one token representative, ever year the 68 teams do NOT represent the best 68 teams in the country, and its not even close.
5) Its not as though schools save money by not getting into the March Madness tourney because they end up in the NIT tourney and still travel and play in an event few watch or care about.
6) The tournament cannot be expanded beyond the 68 teams because there is no room at the front of the schedule for a whole extra round of 64 games.
So here are the solutions:
1) Get rid of the NIT tournament, and in it’s place…
2) Expand the NCAA tournament to 128 teams so that for the first time ever it could be said the tournament includes literally the best teams in the country.
3) To answer objection #6, instead of an extra round in the first week for four regions having teams seeded 1 through 32, keep the first four rounds of the tournament the same, but simply double the number of regions. The same seeding, 1 through 16 would continue, but there would be eight number 1 seeds instead of four. So the first four rounds play out like normal and the extra round is played after in…
4) The Final Eight. The current Final Four is just three games–over too quickly. It would be awesome to expand this to 7 games, which interestingly is the same number of games possible in the NBA finals or the baseball world series. The current Final Four schedule has two games on Saturday, and then the championship game on Monday. The revamped Final Eight schedule would have four games on Saturday, two games on Sunday, a break on Monday, and the championship game on Tuesday.
Summary: The entire length of the tournament is stretched only by one day. The capstone event tuned into by the most people is expanded to seven games, which allows for increased exposure to advertising and school promotion, ticket sales, increased economic activity and so forth. The pointless NIT has been done away with so all the basketball played is meaningful. The increase of regions from 4 to 8 means there will be a greater likelihood teams would be able to play their games closer to home. All the teams that are better than the weak conference 15 and 16 seeds get into the tournament, and there is no more need for bubble watching. All of the problems have been resolved, and there is tremendous value added to the final weekend of hoops.

I have never been less interested in March Madness. Only have watched a few YouTube summaries of the endings of close games. The NIL and transfer rules have ruined it for the smaller schools. On top of that it’s hard to cheer for Libtard U beating Progressive State. Almost all of the schools fall into those categories.
Since March Madness is now the only important part of college basketball, the regular season is pretty much devalued. The P4 conferences have 8 or more teams making the tournament this year.

Yes, there should be automatic bids. No, I don’t hate Miami-OH, but they ranked 269th in strength of schedule. They had their chance to land an automatic bid, and flubbed it, losing to Akron in the MAC tournament. But when you peel back the cover off their undefeated regular season, you can see how many times they just happened to barely get wins against the mediocre teams they played. They weren’t blowing anyone out, and they played nobody of worth in November or December. I don’t think they deserved an at-large bid, and this will encourage other teams in weak conferences to not schedule any difficult games to try and go undefeated and get an at-large bid. The selection committee has preached for years strength of schedule, strength of schedule, but when Miami-OH presented them one of the weakest schedules ever played they caved, not wanting to come off as the Scrooge who took away their dream. They were not a worthy team and would have been bounced in the NIT almost as fast.

Reading Bitter’s comments, perhaps he didn’t realize that Miami-OH did NOT get the automatic bid, and were granted an at-large. I have never argued against the automatic bid, even though its true that the tourney is never the best 68 teams. Had Miami-OH won the MAC tournament, then I would agree they deserved to be there, per the rules. But they lost to Akron, meaning Akron should have been the lone entry from the MAC.

Despite playing bassetball and being on my HS bassetball team [deservedly 2nd team] (and even being able to touch the rim), I do not know a lot about how teams get selected to be in the NCAA bassetball tourney, strength of schedule, rankings, who plays in what conference, why some players holding can take 5 steps without dribbling before dunking and not be called for traveling, why they call bassetball a non-contact sport despite if someone did the same thing they did WITHOUT BEING WHISTLED FOR A FOUL on the court at Walmart they would be arrested for assault etc.
But I do know a lot about monkeys.

I am fine with the automatic bids. It sets up the occasional drama where David can slay Goliath. Who can forget the year when 16-seed UMBC defeated 1-seed Virginia? They had a point guard that looked like skinny high-schooler. I like it because it forces the top teams to respect all opponents and not get cocky. I remember years ago when Arizona boasted two NBA first round picks…they were so full of themselves and completely disrespected an upstart University of Buffalo squad, and of course Buffalo came out and crushed them in a double-digit win.

the whole question of strength of schedule is not a new one. In the 80s and 90s a lot of teams in the top conferences would load up their Nov and Dec schedules playing stooge teams they could blow out by 20 or 30.
but then the NCAA selection gurus started demanding that if you want to get an invite or if you want to get a higher seed, then play difficult to beat teams. It’s good for the development of the players to be challenged.
Coach Oats at Alabama is a great example of this. He made his players face Arizona, Illinois, Purdue, St Johns, and Gonzaga…all before starting the tough SEC play.
So I was understandably shocked to see Miami OH get an at large bid, in opposition to all the strength of schedule preaching the last two decades

high point no doubt had a weaker schedule, but that doesn’t mean they were a weaker team. Had Duke been 370th weakest schedule, it wouldn’t mean they were the 370th weakest team.
but High Point won their tournament to earn a bid. Miami OH did not.
had the roles been reversed, I would argue Miami OH got in legitimately while High Point did not

High Point had a 31-4 record in a weaker conference. They did win their weaker conference. However, Jason probably already ordered his High Point sweatshirt.
DW and Jason probably think the at large bids should only come from power conferences. Maybe the entire Big East and ACC should get 20 at large bids.

MIami OH, a stupid pick which never should have been anywhere near the NCAA tournament, got blown away by the #6 seed.
High Point, which deserved to be in the tournament by EARNING entry, beat the # 5 seed and played a highly competitive game against the #4 seed, losing by 6.
The results speak for themselves.

I hope the NCAA powers that be learned their lesson and ignore the pressure to invite teams based on emotion and smoke and mirrors.
Inviting the likes of Miami OH just encourages bad teams to play weak schedules and opponents in the hopes their “record” get them in March Madness.
If March Madness is not based on merit then it is just entertainment.

I think at large bids are fine.
But they should still be based on merit.
If the at large bids are going to be based solely on entertainment value, bring on the OH Miami speedo stunt, then the NCAA should make that the official policy.
Until then, joke teams like Miami OH should be kept out.

Not sure why Iran is still able to threaten the straits of Hormuz.
It would seem to me that the coastal weaponry that Iran would use to attack shipping should be vulnerable to attack and could be wiped out.
Yes, Iran could still fire ballistic missiles at the strait from inland sites, but those missiles don’t have the accuracy to hit a target as small as a moving ship. And escorts should be able to shoot down any drones.

Straits of Hormuz… Iran bought mines from China that are on the bottom of the Straits and released when motor signatures from ships above are detected. A missile is then launched upward to be guided to hit and sink the ship.

If they go ahead and beat the #5 seed and then only lose by 6 to the #4 seed, power to them.

Tina would be proud.
High Point was actually 30-4 AND won the Big South Conf Tournament by winning their games by 22, 4 and 25 (final), make it 51 points difference in 3 games.
But Bitter in his intellectually dishonest BS makes that the SAME as going 0-30 and then winning the Patriot Tournament by 1 pt each game.
You can’t make this sh-t up.
