I generally agree with you DW on many things. Your new take above on the projected house map seems right. This week’s election saw many purple and blue districts that went for Trump revert back to blue. This was very pronounced in CA, where many Trump districts voted for Newsome’s redistricting plan. Va and NJ now have supermajorities in their states and will likely redistrict now as well, when combined with CA, this will severely blunt any Republican redistricting efforts, putting severe pressure on republicans to overcome the midterm curse. Trump and the republicans must focus like a laser on bread and butter issues to thwart democrat narratives leading up to the 2026 midterms. A tough task in light of the Biden spending inflationary price increases that will be permanent, barring a depressionary cycle, something that would devastate the economy. I never say never, but holding the house will be tough.
As for the filibuster, I don’t think it should be fully repealed, but for emergency funding the government to prevent a shutdown, I believe a carve out should be made for continuing resolutions. Here’s why. When the Dems held the congress and whitehouse and the republicans shut down the government to force changes, we were excoriated in the press and were blamed by the public for the shutdown, forcing us to fold. We learned that it is not a viable tool for us when out of power. Now that the democrats are out of power, they are doing the same, and despite their hypocritical statements shunning such action, are at best tied with republicans for blame or with less blame, depending on the polls. Turn on any MSM outlet and you’ll see the president and republicans blamed for this Democrat shutdown. If this continues and holiday flights are cancelled or, god forbid a plane crashes, expect republicans to get even more blame and the media hysteria to hit a new crescendo. So clearly, the republicans are at a distinct disadvantage, not being able to use or even defend against shutdown coercion. That is why I think eliminating the filibuster in connection with continuing resolution votes preventing a shutdown works. It removes this as a disadvantage for republicans when we are in power and puts things at status quo when we are out of power. Now some may argue that it is a slippery slope and this will only encourage dems to totally eliminate the filibuster when they retake the senate in the future. I say that if that is the case, they would do it anyway like they told us they would last year. If it wasn’t for fetterman and Sinema, it would have been gone. The Republican are going to need to get past this soon and start moving legislation through that improves the economic lives of Americans. This will do it quickly and we can focus on the next fight.
Enough from me. Time to go back to watching premier league soccer.

Tina’s link and story above about the discovery of who the woman was who planted the j6 bomb….
In a LOCAL story about this, it includes another paragraph about this.

Here I provide an updated version of the famous Jefferson’s theme song:
Well we’re movin’ on out (movin on out)
From the east side (movin on out)
From a Zohran disaster by and by.
Movin’ on out (movin on out)
From the east side (movin on out)
We finally lost our piece of the pie.
Fish don’t fry in the kitchen;
Beans don’t burn on the grill.
Took a whole lotta votin’
Just to give up that hill.
Now we’re out of the big leagues
Losin’ our turn at bat.
As long as we live, it’s Mamdani’s baby
There’s an awful lot wrong with that.
Well we’re movin’ on out (movin on out)
From the east side (movin on out)
From a Zohran disaster by and by.
Movin’ on out (movin on out)
From the east side (movin on out)
We finally lost our piece of the pie.

Anyone here ever spent time in Pensacola? I’ve got a couple of days here, looking for recommendations.

GF, I haven’t been up there in a while, but I would highly recommend McGuire’s Irish Pub. They’re located at 600 E. Gregory St, near the water (5 minute drive from Pensacola bay). I’ve spent some amount of off work hours when I e been up there (and some on work hours, but let’s not tell anyone about that, if you know what I mean) and it’s a great place for food and drink. The beaches are amazing as well and the charter fishing is top notch, but I’m not sure if you’re into that.

If I were Trans. Sec. Duffy, I would announce the immediate cessation of all flights beginning or ending in MA, RI, CT, VT, CA, MN, IL, MD NJ and other state that has 2 D U.S. senators.
Because of Fetterman in PA voting to open the government and pass the clean CR, I would only close the airports in Philly and Harrisburg.

Janz,
I also have been wondering why Trump has not made a national TV address about the Dem. senators shutting down government and exerting their tyranny of the minority.
But Trump probably would not stay on message and ramble about lots of non-important goofy things….since he is not a good speaker.
If he does go on TV for a speech on this subject, I would hope he opens with a joke. I would be glad to write one for him… like “A blind man walks into a bar, and then a chair, and then a table, and then another chair…” or ” Albania back in the 1400s had a very short king. He was only 12 inches tall. Was a terrible king, but a great ruler.”

FLA, noted; I actually walked by a while ago. The main drag has an arts festival going on this weekend (and a competing Greek festival nearby out in by the Orthodox Church). Nice downtown, love the old buildings, and pleased that the statues haven’t been torn down. Went to an open house up on East Hill today, gorgeously restored 1918 Craftsman. Of course the insurance is more than twice what I pay in California (trade earthquakes and fires for hurricanes), and I was surprised that the property tax is the same.

This woman (Shauni Kerkoff) who was a Capitol police officer at the time and was shortly thereafter was promoted to FBI/CIA).
They have the dope on her for planting the j6 bombs…she lives in Alexandria next door to the buy who bought the Metro ticket she used to go into DC on the night of J5. They know the j6 bomber used that metro pass to get to and from DC. And they know the neighbor did NOT Sue the pass that day.
She also was one of the first Capitol police to fire pepper balls at the crowd. And testified in court against various of those j6s who were charged, tried and convicted.
She is also 5’7″ tall (just like the j6 bomb planter).
She had a broken tibia in college playing soccer and this impacts her walking gait and the j6 bomb planter gait is a 94% match to hers. Other physical characteristics of her and j6 bomb planter match at 98%.
Cash Cow told me all of this.

I EXPECT HER TO DIE SOON IN SOME MYSTERIOUS, UNFORTUNATE CIRCUMSTANCE…”heart attack”, hit by bus, apartment fire, found hanged in a jail cell, committed suicide by stabbing herself 47 times in the back, etc.
Possibly all the these….

FLA, I am stuck in CA until the step kids get out of high school (unless their dad keels over, which I don’t expect since he is only 13 years older than I am and will turn just 61 in a few months). This was more of a curiosity tour for me. That said, this restoration is pricey, $430/sq. ft, on a quarter acre corner lot. My current house is on a half acre (admittedly including a hillside behind that is usable), and I had to pay $467/sq. ft, so it’s not far off. The only things that put me off had I been in a position to make an offer were that the ceilings were VERY high at 12 feet, and the central hallway was quite wide, so it felt like a hotel (a very clean and attractive hotel, to be sure). Unless Wife 2.0 doesn’t budge and wants to be closer to New Orleans (which she absolutely loves), I am thinking of anywhere from the eastern shore across from Mobile (Fairhope area) out to here. Gulf Shores didn’t impress me as much, also seemed very touristy and lacking much historical character. Regardless, I have to hone in on something I alone can afford with our equity and my pensions because 2.0 is dead set on buying out the family cottage up on Lake Huron (way up the lower peninsula by Thunder Bay), so perhaps we’ll become snowbirds.

Aside from a lack of property taxes (which both TX and FL are working on) and income taxes (which both states lack), I am also worried about inheritance taxes (which TX just abolished if i read the news correctly). That said, perhaps that only matters if my boy moves to the same state; if he is a resident elsewhere, then I guess that would be a moot point, no?

For those of you not following the story of 3I/Atlas…
It has lost its tail after it came around the other side of the sun.
It is also sending long streams of messages in binary code. One guy who is said to have translated it says it says “We mean you no harm. We are coming to observe you. Hang tight.”
Hang tight? Ahhh, I do not think he has the right translation…

It’s late and I may be feeling the effects of a full day of premier league soccer and college football binge watching (with a possible libation or few), but you’re referring to California inheritance taxes, right?
Florida does not have a state inheritance tax. beneficiaries who inherit assets in Florida are not required to pay a state-level tax on the inheritance. In fact , the Florida Constitution explicitly prohibits the state from imposing inheritance taxes, and the state legislature cannot enact such a tax without a constitutional amendment, which requires 60% voter approval. If your boy moves here in Florida, he’s fine.

one last thing, GF, that’s a nice house, but they are asking for way more than most of the other houses are valued in that neighborhood and it’s been on the market for some time (reflecting their high ask). In fact, the house right behind it , which looks sweet, is currently on the market for almost $100k less. Click on the link below and scroll down to the neighborhood map. You’ll see all the current values, the recent sales (yellow dot) and the other houses for sale (red dots) – https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1524-E-Strong-St-Pensacola-FL-32501/44719660_zpid/
Here’s the house right behind the one you looked at asking for over $100k less even though comparable footage – https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1519-E-Desoto-St-Pensacola-FL-32501/44719659_zpid/
Surprised your realtor didn’t take you aside and shuffle you to the house next door. One positive, Both have new metal hurricane proof roofs, which is a real plus down here.

It’s a bit high for my taste, but a TON of renovations have been done. I can’t post the before pics, but that house was definitely run down. New everything, including the roof, foam insulation in the attic and a humidity control system to abate mold, along with all new plumbing and electrical wiring. But yes, go down a block or so, and there is a gorgeous home for $725k that’s equally appealing. I think the owners just want to get back some of the hard work and money they put into bringing that house back from the grave.
