“Unfortunately I do not expect to be alive to see it happen.”
Or pretty much any lifetime for the indefinite future. Earth has assets not found anywhere else:
a) An atmosphere with the perfect mix of oxygen so we can breathe without it being explosive.
b) A magnetosphere to defect the harmful radiation of the sun so that humans won’t get fried with radiation poisoning and die before being able to reproduce.
c) Clean water to drink and thereby stay alive.
d) Soil that can grow food.
e) Temperatures that are not too hot or too cold. For instance on Mercury, if you stand in the sunlight, you would dissolve instantly like the guy at the end of Raiders of the lost Ark, but a step to the left in the shadow, and you would freeze like Han Solo in the Empire Strikes Back.
Overcoming these basic obstacles, and this is by no means a comprehensive list of obstacles, would require the entire assets of planet earth to achieve. But as it is now there are wars all over the earth, and we cannot even get squabbling factions of Islam to get along. As long as there are all these wars and conflicts, no such effort to leverage all the assets of everyone in the world to pull off a new settlement on another planet will ever happen.
Lets see if Bitter will agree with this usage of slavery.
During the Roman empire, some Christians would save their money, and purchase a young girl from the slave market–a girl who otherwise was doomed to a life of sex slavery and worse. The Christians would keep the girl as a slave to protect her from predators and they would cultivate a nurturing and loving childhood environment, and then when the girl reached adulthood she was released from slavery. But the Christians were slave owners for many years. Was this good behavior on their part, or does ALL SLAVERY is wrong apply, and they never should have purchased the girl?
If there was NO slavery, there would be no sex slavery. Nice try, DW. Of course, you used to say American slavery wasn’t so bad because owners wanted to protect their investment/property and treated the slaves well.
hmm…I don’t recall ever holding that view about American slavery. It was horrible. Inexcusable. Period. And one of my favorite films is Amazing Grace, the story of Wilberforce’s effort to end the slave trade in England.
My point with the above anecdote is there were some people who were powerless to end slavery, but did what they could to rescue some people from it. But to do so, they had to make a purchase.
And as for the Civil War, I wholeheartedly identify with the union. Every time I visit Fort Monroe, I smile as I step into the fort, knowing it was the only part of Virginia that remained union soil and was never part of the confederacy, and then I smile when I step into the cell where Jefferson Davis was held prisoner, and I smile because on the wall they had a HUGE American flag that would be the first thing Davis would see every morning when he woke up.
DW – I will let you know. Last year, my wife and I toured a fort in Delaware where Confederate prisoners were held. It was nice to think of all their suffering even though it was not as bad as the rebel prisons like Libby and Andersonville.
We were trying to think of places to visit. My wife has suggested Charleston, SC and Savanah, GA. I love history but I have no interest in visiting places of treason.
I don’t bet on baseball, but if I did, I would put down huge money on the Phillies to win tonight, because the way the Mets behave is they win a few games in a row and they always relax and start thinking about their world series rings and the ticker tape parade and so forth. Having won the first two games over the Phillies, they think they “won” the series, which is true, but they don’t seem to be aware of the fact that to catch up, they need to sweep. Tonight they won’t run out ground balls, they will stand at the plate disinterested in swinging the bat, and their pitchers will throw it right down the middle hoping the Phillies’ batters will get themselves out.
DW – When the Phillies made it to the Mets bullpen, I thought they would win both games. They didn’t. The Phillies are in their home run or strikeout phase now. They might win tonight but it will be a grind.
Mendoza has little interest in actually winning. The Mets would do better by managing the team from the twitter feed of fans who comment live during the game.
Last night he threw the Phillies a lifeline by bringing in the poorest pitcher from the bullpen. The Phillies only scored 1 run against him, but it could have been much worse.
Trump has maneuvered Democrats into the wrong side of two issues that could be absolutely lethal for them: privileged elites should be able to ignore laws like mortgage fraud, and street crime is no big deal as long as the homes of politicians are safe.
Tim Armstead, former speaker of House who had been serving in elected position on the WV Supreme Court of appeals, has passed.I told him I was not going to run in 2016, he named me vice chair. He was only 60.

“FDA has now issued marketing authorization for those at higher risk: Moderna (6+ months), Pfizer (5+), and Novavax (12+). These vaccines are available for all patients who choose them after consulting with their doctors.” They are doing amazing things.
GOLDMAN SACHS: BRENT OIL TO DROP TO LOW $50S BY 2026 Goldman Sachs expects Brent crude to drop to the low $50s by late 2026, citing a supply surplus and rising OECD inventories. The bank sees stocks growing 0.6 mb/d through 2026, pushing prices below forwards. Risks include stronger Chinese stockpiling or weaker Russian output, which could keep Brent nearer $62.
Consumer confidence took a hit reflecting worries about tariffs and inflation.
I think the problem is that consumers haven’t been apprised yet of FLA2025’s novel theory of economics, where higher taxes and costs miraculously are “absorbed” and have no effect on prices, demand, profit margins, investments, etc.
Once they understand the new laws of economics, consumer confidence should go up.

Recent research from Canada’s McMaster University revealed that animal-sourced foods are not linked to a higher risk of death.
The study discovered that animal proteins could also offer protective benefits against cancer-related mortality, according to a press release from the university.
Researchers analyzed data from nearly 16,000 adults, aged 19 and older, considering how much animal and plant protein they typically consumed.
They also examined whether these diet patterns were associated with a risk of dying from causes such as heart disease and cancer.
The results revealed no increased risk of death in association with eating more animal protein.
The data also showed a “modest but significant reduction” in cancer-related mortality.”
