Slade Gorton is the only one who comes to mind in “recent” years when he narrowly lost to serial groper Brock Adams (who was forced out in 1992, only to result in Patty Murray’s “Mom in tennis shoes!” schtick) but came back to beat future Governor, and also future groper, Mike Lowry in 1988 even as Dukakis edged out Bush 41 in the state).

Mike Lowry became governor as a sort of consolation prize in 1992 (kind of the opposite of Dianne Feinstein who became a Senator instead of governor, the office she really wanted).

Gorton ended up holding both of the seats, separated by a two year absence. I think he got robbed in 2000, though he probably would have lost in 2006 anyway.

Well, one of our supper club members has moved to Milwaukee suburbs and Don (who died) was another of our regular supper clubbers who obviously was not here this evening. Plus one other couple was off visiting in either North or South Carolina.

I lobbied the wife to let me invite 4 HHR folks to fill the vacant seats. I wanted to invite GF, DW, Bill W, Fla2025, NYCMike and Bitter. She said cut it down to just 4. I could not decide who to leave out. So I was given no selections.

For soirees, Walt is in charge of:

–site preparation (vacuuming and dusting, sweeping deck, sweeping patio beneath deck, sweeping front porch, cleaning windows and glass in doors, moving tables and chairs, cleaning grill, lowering the exterior blind on the deck pergola to shield guests from sun, mowing and trimming, cleaning out fish pond, etc.

–chef assistant (wash dishes dirtied during preparation, peeling vegetables, get trays of food ready, get out the various kinds of weird crackers, nuts, cheeses, mix up the drinks, fill the ice bucket, etc.

–getting the high stool ladder to climb and retrieve various plates, special wine glasses, dishes, etc. from top shelves

    –handle guest parking

–helping less mobile guests into and out of the house to and from their vehicles

–cooking various things on the grill

–being half in charge of entertainment of guests during the social gathering

–busing the tables after dinner is over, making and bringing coffee and desserts to guests

–after the event, filling the dishwasher and also washing lots of pots and pans and whatever else will not fit in the dishwasher

–putting tables and chairs back where they belong.

The wife is in charge of

    –setting the day and time

    -inviting the specific guests

    –planning the meal

–doing a million flower arrangements for the tables, etc.

–doing most of the cooking (except various things I have to cook on a 450 degree grill in the blazing evening sun)
