I haven’t done any international travel. However, my parents loved to go camping throughout the states every summer. So, that was why Utah seemed to fit the picture I had of it in my youth.

I have largely refrained from posting replies on the subject of suffering and evil and why God would allow these things. Part of the reason for my restraint is my desire to be sensitive to the suffering of Bitter around the loss of his niece. The pain is very real, and these are legitimate questions to ask. Suffering has long been the human condition, and we could recount past tragedies endlessly. There are the natural ones, flood, fire, earthquake, tsunami, hurricane, tornado, and there are man caused evils; war, genocide, shootings, torture and a host of other evil acts. It does seem that whenever a major calamity unfolds, some people turn to the Christian thinkers asking them to somehow either make sense of it, or apologize because God missed it, or explain why God did not stop it.
Many attempt to answer this question with just punting the ball deeper into philosophical territory, or try to completely separate God from the evil. In the end, God chose to create a world into which he placed man, where man could choose to rebel against him, which he did, and in so doing plunge the world into ongoing calamity and evil. Many conclude from this that they should hate God for such negligence in deciding to make it so this could happen, but on the other side of it, God sent a means of rescue that involved the betrayal and crucifixion of Christ, who unjustly received the full dose of evil against him. I would rather have a God who allowed for the existence of evil, but is still sovereign over it than a god who is helpless and has no control over it.
I realize that this does not satisfy the answer to the question, “Why me?” Why would God intervene and mercifully stop evil in some situations while allowing it to happen in others. Why did he allow the holocaust? Why did he allow a simple flu virus in 1918-20 to go viral and wipe out up to 100 million people? Why school shootings? We have no guarantees that any of us won’t be caught up in something like this. God created the first humans in innocence, but with the potential to choose evil, which they did. Anything good that we experience after this is part of his common grace and mercy. We receive this so frequently and abundantly that we stop and are shocked when it is withheld. In the end, I am compelled to trust God that in his infinite wisdom and purposes, he has a greater plan that I cannot explain with my finite reasoning. The Old Testament book of Job dealt with this topic. It is not an easy one, and I hope that whoever reads this picks up on my tone that I am not being flippant with the pain of those who suffer, nor am I in a position to tell God he doesn’t know what he is doing. Despite all the pain and suffering, there is still much mercy and grace, and God has provided the ultimate solution to suffering and evil in the person of Jesus Christ.

So today the Supreme Court stays and injunction that was put in place by a San Francisco judge many weeks ago, preventing the downsizing of various Government agencies on the basis that the Executive Order issued with those instructions was itself unlawful.
The Injunction prevented even the development of a “Reduction in Force” plan as authorized by a statute long in existence. Noteworthy is that the vote of Court was 8-1, with even Justice Sotomayor writing a concurrence making clear that no actual reorganization plan was before the Court so this was not a Court authorization of the reorganization and downsizing.
But Justice Jackson could not even bring herself to do that. She continues to vocalize that view that a President must always ask permission — in this case he didn’t ask Congress if they were OK with his reorganization plans.

really though? As gundlach says the fed doesn’t actually set interest rates. It just follows the 2 year treasury yield (w a lag) and does what it tells Powell. Right now the 2 year is about 0.5 to 0.75 lower than the Fed rate so that argues for maybe 0.5 to 1.0 Fed rate cut in September.
OF COURSE….last year summer going into September the Fed was in the exact same situation. The 2 year was about a full point lower than the Fed rate arguing for a full point decrease into Sept rate cuts.
Guess what happened when they cut in sept? It caused the 10 year rate to INCREASE. That’s because the Fed doesn’t control the 10 year yield unless it’s going QE or unlimited YCC (which the BOJ was trying and the market called it out via currency devaluation.)
What I’m getting at is there is some chance that this repeats this year. Fed cuts in september only for market to say….wait a sec if you’re going to be cutting I’m not buying your junk bondsUS treasuries.

–began having mental health issues about a year ago. became a real loner.
–watched lots of TV news and believed everything he saw on TV (accd. to his brother in MI)
–his father was driving around looking for him at 2:30 a.m. the morning of the shooting. Father told the police they had an argument and the son loaded weapons into his car and drove off. Father said son has mental health issues and was armed.
–father reported son missing from his home in McAllen TX (about 18 miles away from shooting site) at 4:30 a.m.
–shooting happened about 5:30 a.m. or some later
–shooter had sprayed Latin words in black paint on his white Chevy car door (“Call to Duty” in Latin)
–had other weapons and ammo in his car

–Police say that the other 10 or 11 people they arrested who were demonstrating, shooting off fireworks at the building, etc. said they got a call (apparently from one of the shooters) to come and cause a ruckus and draw ICE agents outside.
–The other shooter’s gun jammed and he abandoned it and fled along with the other miscreants who were causing mayhem outside the building before the shooting.
Within a short time, the police had pulled over vehicle or vehicles of the demonstrators and arrested them. They had a cell phone inside a kevlar bag because they thought it blocked their signals. Also had body armor and I think they also said they had two way radios.
