  6. Special Memorial Day prayers and deepest gratitude to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice to this great country

The New York Times had a hilarious piece about how the democrats belief that demographics is their destiny blew up in their faces . It’s behind a paywall, however Powerline did a decent summary of it. It’s well worth a read –

    https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2025/05/does-the-democratic-party-have-a-future-2.php

    excerpt –

Donald J. Trump’s victory in 2024 was not an outlier.

It was the culmination of continuous gains by Republicans in much of the country each time he has run for president, a sea of red that amounts to a flashing warning sign for a Democratic Party out of power and hoping for a comeback.

The steady march to the right at the county level reveals not just the extent of the nation’s transformation in the Trump era but also the degree to which the United States now resembles two countries charging in opposite directions.

All told, Mr. Trump has increased the Republican Party’s share of the presidential vote in each election he’s been on the ballot in close to half the counties in America — 1,433 in all — according to an analysis by The New York Times.

It is a staggering political achievement, especially considering that Mr. Trump was defeated in the second of those three races, in 2020.

By contrast, Democrats have steadily expanded their vote share in those three elections in only 57 of the nation’s 3,100-plus counties.

    This is particularly delicious:

Even more ominous for the Democrats are the demographic and economic characteristics of these counties: The party’s sparse areas of growth are concentrated almost exclusively in America’s wealthiest and most educated pockets.

Yet Mr. Trump has steadily gained steam across a broad swath of the nation, with swelling support not just in white working-class communities but also in counties with sizable Black and Hispanic populations.
    ***
Ben Tulchin, a pollster who worked on Senator Bernie Sanders’s presidential campaigns, said the old political calculations for how Democrats can win elections were now obsolete.

“The math doesn’t work,” he said. “For years, the belief was Democrats have had demographic destiny on our side. Now, the inverse is true.”

I have been commenting on this political realignment for years here.

Amoral Scumbag used to get all riled up when I called the 2014 election (the one he claimed was the model for R wins until eternity) a R dead cat bounce. He also hated it when I said the only way the R could survive as a national party was to trade in its traditional coalition (rural voters + suburban voters) for a working class coalition including blue collar workers in all demographics (including blacks and Hispanics) and small business owners, retaining the rural vote and a (dwindling) share of the educated suburban vote.

In order to accomplish this the party had to evolve into a much more protectionist/isolationist posture and a much more populist message.

It lost me in the process because I don’t agree with much of the new message but at the same time I have recognized that this was the path for the party to remain viable.

Finally, as I have stated many times this change did not come as a result of Trump, the wheels were already in motion way before him, and he capitalized on the movement rather than starting it. In a way, his longstanding isolationist/protectionist rhetoric gave him a credibility that the “traditional” Rs (aka Jeb) did not have.

These kind of realignments are usually not fleeting, look at the shift in the South and in WV, KY, and TN, for example which have now lasted for several decades.

But there are challenges for the R to keep its inroads in the blue collar and minority vote. It has to deliver to keep them.

Also visited St. Andrews. Saw the golf course. Pretty stark. only very small (and deep) sand traps and bi trees or bushes of any kind anywhere. In other words, no place to pee while you are golfing.

Enjoyed walking about the town of St. Andrews and wandering about the ruins St. Andrews cathedral and cemetery, and seeing the ruins of the castle. Great pizza at Zizzi restaurant.

Trump is wrong. Nothing “happened” to Putin.. He was KGB thug and killer before, and still is.

President Trump: Yeah, I’ll give you an update. I’m not happy with what Putin’s doing! He’s killing a lot of people. And I don’t know what the hell happened to Putin! I’ve known him a long time. Always gotten along with him. But he’s sending rockets into cities and killing people. And I don’t like it at all. OK? We’re in the middle of talking and he’s shooting rockets into Kiev and other cities! I don’t like it at all.

Unknown reporter: Mr. President, what do you want to do about that?

President Trump: I’m surprised. I’m very surprised. We’ll see what we’re going to do. What am I going to tell you? You’re the fake news, aren’t you? You’re totally fake. Any other questions? I don’t like what Putin is doing, not even a little bit. He’s killing people. And something happened to this guy, and I don’t like it.

Same with the Deep State. You would imagine that a secret “state within a state” operating inside the Federal Government would forcibly involve thousands of people, yet not ONE person has ever admitted to belonging to it and not ONE shred of evidence has ever been produced that such an organization ever existed.

Trump forgot that Putin has a lot invested in this war, he didn’t sacrifice hundreds of thousands of Russians and hundreds of billions and become an international pariah (well, not to the Chicons, Tinas and janzams of the world of course) to get the Donbas territory that he already controlled and Crimea.

His investment is in making Russia great again, either in the mold of the old USSR or Peter the Great’s vision of a Greater Russia, and so he is not going to give that up for Trump’s version of Let’s Make a Deal.

He will have to be either bought off (expensive) or fought off (expensive).

Trump was sure if he could get Zelensky to agree to that it would end the war. He did everything to badger Zelensky into accepting that including suspending aid, humiliating him in the Oval Office, etc. He ignored Putin because he figured he had more leverage with Zelensky.

It will certainly cause inflation for the products affected by the tariffs.

Tariffs are a tax on the American consumer. Period.

Not to mention the damage to US exporters. Latest poll in Canada shows 75% of Canadians are not buying US products.

There are other things that Trump is doing, so as increased energy production and deregulation, that partially offset the general inflation numbers.

But to say tariffs don’t increase prices is asinine.

Laffer is famous for the Laffer curve, which says that if you keep increasing taxes eventually revenues will fall because either people will not pay the taxes or they will decide if is no longer worth it to stay in business or work.

Since his greatest need in life is for people to talk about him/worry about him/respond to him, when people laugh or ignore him he just moves on to the next topic and tries to hook someone else.

I’m glad the Democrats can’t seem to figure that out….I just hope the Republicans can.

True. And the fact is that by suspending aid and isolating Zelensky and the EU and sucking up to Putin he did in effect abandon Ukraine.

But if he is willing to acknowledge that Putin is a war criminal not to be trusted I will give him credit for the realization. If he willing to say look, I tried to make a deal, but Putin is bent on conquering Ukraine and that is not acceptable to me, he gets credit for that.

In the end, what is important is Ukraine’s sovereignty.

It will be interesting that If Trump takes a harder stance on Russia and more pro-Ukraine what will the HHR Putin bots like Chicon, janzam, NYC, Tina say. It will be fun to see their heads explode

If he sticks with >100% tariffs on China, and especially eliminates the de minimus tariff exemption, we will stop seeing these goods come in from China completely. Since our CPI and PPI numbers have difficulty with new goods, quality changes, and discontinued goods, I have no confidence the Chinese crap will ever show up in the inflation numbers.

Tariffs on iron & steel, on imported autos, on electronic goods – all will start filtering into PPI and CPI numbers as new contracts are negotiated and new goods imported.

As explained months ago, Trump (once he decided to try to negotiate an end to the war) was not going to abandon Ukraine because it would look like a loss.

Putin (as suggested weeks ago) is not ready to end the war. Trump will now use military and economic resources to “encourage” Putin.

    No surprise.

Zelenskyy succeeded in convincing Trump that Putin is an even bigger impediment to peace than is Zelenskyy. I am a bit surprised he had the emotional control to do so.

Her conservative credentials are beyond reproach, and ironically, when Trump was still a democrat, she spotted him as the one to lead the Republican Party. When she died in 2016, Trump took time off from his campaign to personally speak at her funeral. It’s interesting Schlafly could see the conservatism in a trump when some here only see his multiple marriages, donation schedule as being enough to discredit his conservative policies.

Zzzzzz…… Chicon thinks this is somehow relevant or significant? What an imbecilic moron.

“US imports”. If these countries have high tariffs on US products but US products are a very small percentage of total consumption then the tariffs would have very little effect on inflation.

Tariffs make a difference in the US because imported products are a much larger percentage of consumption and we are imposing tariffs on a huge chunk of imported products.

So only a complete idiot would compare the effect of “US imports” in countries where “US imports” are not a significant part of the economy with “worldwide imports” in the US, a large part of the economy.

And of course, the 800 lb gorilla in the room is that very few tariffs have been actually implemented. Most are on hold or there is still product in stock on the supply pipeline, so the “tariffs have no effect on inflation” argument is complete intellectual dishonesty.

    ————-

This is a bit misleading. Yea, on a per country basis, the “Liberation Day” tariffs that were delayed involve more countries. However, the tariffs that were implemented on February 4 for China and in early March for Mexico and Canada are still in effect, and although they have been changed, they still exceed the 10% threshold initially implemented.  Moreover, China, Mexico, and Canada, may be only 3 countries, but we do over 40% of our imports from them. So, they may not be the “vast majority” of countries we import from but they are material.  As for the claim that the “there is still product in stock”  for these countries, that is also not likely. While inventories delay price increases, the high volume of imports from China, Mexico, and Canada (easily over $1 trillion in 2024) means inventory stock depletion is already apparent. Fast-moving consumer goods (e.g., apparel, food from Mexico and Canada) turn over quickly (weeks), while durable goods (e.g., consumer goods, electronics, steel, from China) may last longer (months). However, by May 28, 2025, nearly three months after the March tariffs on Canada and Mexico and four months after China’s February tariffs, many inventories have  likely been depleted or are nearing depletion, and would definitely be a factor now with replenishing imports.  So why aren’t we seeing any material price increases (we DID see a  slight increase in monthly cpi from March to April , not annual cpi) ? That’s because the inflationary impact related to these tariffed goods is complex, and based on numerous factors like demand elasticity, profit margins, and the ability of importers to absorb the tariff, among other factors.  Will that continue? Who knows. It did in Trump’s first term with smaller and less broader tariffs than what we have now on China, Mexico and Canada.  Only time will tell for this go around, but so far, so good as Chicon is noting.
