I can accept the label of opportunist for Trump, who indeed saw and capitalized on the rise in isolationism/protectionism inside the R electorate. While “front runner” Jeb was out there talking about respecting conservatives, immigration as an act of love, and Common Core, Trump ate his lunch talking about issues that actually interested rust belt blue collar workers. It also helped that Jeb saw Rubio as a threat more than Trump and spent $50 million of the $250 million he wasted tearing Rubio down.
But Trump was the quintessential insider, not outsider. He never expressed any “independent streak”, he was pro Dem on just about everything as a Democrat, including on all major issues such as the economy, the deficit, abortion, health care, tariffs….and he was no firebrand on immigration either. He was a wealthy NY real estate developer and crony capitalist with no issues all with the Dem leadership he funded for decades.
And frankly, he was not a great “disruptor” in his first term either. He did nothing to drain the swamp or cut the size or cost of government. His achievements were more on the line of appointing conservative judges, cutting taxes, and energy independence.
I will agree he is much more of a disruptor in his second term. DOGE, the changes in the DOJ, FBI and other agencies are indeed examples of this. But is it happening because he is reacting to all the lawfare and persecution he suffered or is it a genuine desire for change? I am not sure. I will take it either way.
I give Trump his due. I approved of his first term in office, I voted for him twice afterwards. On balance I think his performance so far is good with a few major caveats.

I hate it when I can’t translate….have no idea what this means.
■ The networks’ highly negative coverage of President Trump stands in stark contrast to the mostly (59%) positive coverage they provided Joe Biden four years ago.
■ While TV coverage of Trump’s last term was heavily focused on an array of personal controversies, this year’s coverage has mostly been about serious policy issues, led by tariffs (361 minutes), DOGE (310 minutes) and immigration (233 minutes).
■ The networks’ spin on Trump’s tariffs faced 93% negative coverage, while the DOGE cutbacks to government were greeted by 97% negative spin.
■ Even on immigration, the issue where the public gives the President his highest ratings, the networks’ spin was 93% negative. Out of nearly four hours (233 minutes) of evening news airtime devoted to immigration, these newscasts spent just 3.5 minutes letting viewers know just how much Trump has reduced border crossings.
■ Besides Trump himself, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. faced 89% negative press, DOGE’s Elon Musk was hit with 96% negative coverage, and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth received a unanimous 100% bad press from the networks.
His reasoning is that this wartime powers act was intended to be used against an “invading army”, and that the government didn’t show that using it against gangs isn’t beyond the scope of the law.
“In a 36-page opinion, Judge Rodriguez concluded that Trump’s March 15 invocation of the Alien Enemies Act is “unlawful” and “exceeds the scope” of the centuries-old wartime law that allows the president to deport noncitizens with little-to-no due process during an invasion or predatory incursion.
“The President cannot summarily declare that a foreign nation or government has threatened or perpetrated an invasion or predatory incursion of the United States, followed by the identification of the alien enemies subject to detention or removal,” Judge Rodriguez wrote.
“The Proclamation makes no reference to and in no manner suggests that a threat exists of an organized, armed group of individuals entering the United States at the direction of Venezuela to conquer the country or assume control over a portion of the nation. Thus, the Proclamation’s language cannot be read as describing conduct that falls within the meaning of ‘invasion’ for purposes of the AEA,” he wrote.”
I actually don’t agree with the ruling, because I think the judge is fabricating a scope that doesn’t really exist. I don’t agree that you have to prove the gang members are trying to conquer the country, I think if you show they are “invaders” that harm US citizens, it should be enough.
““The President cannot summarily declare that a foreign nation or government has threatened or perpetrated an invasion or predatory incursion of the United States, followed by the identification of the alien enemies subject to detention or removal,” Judge Rodriguez wrote.”

The upshot of the article is that the judges can keep doing what they have been doing and Trump can just ignore them. If the courts declare something to be unconstitutional, the executive branch doesn’t have to change its behavior. The only recourse for the ‘country’ to stop the President is impeachment via the legislative branch.
The judiciary has no army, no police forces that they control. The US Marshalls that protect the courts work for the executive branch.
So there is no need to impeach judges – they are powerless.
Chicon – I think Trump’s coalition would hold together fairly well under a strategy of standing up to the federal courts. Blue collar and Southern Trumpers are not fond of either federal judges or DC. A lot of business-focused conservatives only care about the economy – if massively down-sized 2025/26 appropriations bills are passed by Congress and the 2018 tax cuts made permanent, the chances of an economic boom are good. Independents will not be swayed by any of the Dems’ old arguments – climate change, systemic racism, affirmative action – these are going to be fading away.
