Regarding Mary Surratt I find it completely implausible that she was not aware of at least a conspiracy being hatched in her boarding house. She had the option of evicting them and/or reporting them but she did neither.
Thus, I think her role easily fits into the “accessory” definition and as such justice was done when she was hung.
The ECB is expected to cut interest rates for the 7th time, and yet, “Too Late” Jerome Powell of the Fed, who is always TOO LATE AND WRONG, yesterday issued a report which was another, and typical, complete “mess!” Oil prices are down, groceries (even eggs!) are down, and the USA is getting RICH ON TARIFFS. Too Late should have lowered Interest Rates, like the ECB, long ago, but he should certainly lower them now. Powell’s termination cannot come fast enough!
Reading through the comments on the previous thread I saw some very unpersuasive points in the defense of Mary Surratt.
the size of the rooming house, maybe she didn’t know what was going on. Zzzzz…
there was a request for clemency….. zzzzz… lots of guilty people have requests for clemency
Her role was not the same as the other conspirators…zzzzz… she was an accessory to murder, she could have stopped Lincoln’s assassination. She deserved to be hung just as much as any other conspirator.
She was only a traitor “sympathizer”….zzzzz… so now you have the motive.

Surratt might have known. Probably she at least knew that something was up, but one of the complications was the inadequate way in which the case was argued. Historians say both sides had much better cases that could have been argued, so maybe they cancel each other out, or maybe it would have pointed to clear guilt or innocence.
Its just that death is irreversible, and its good to be sure. But in this context, three of the four were dead to rights guilty of the crime, and there was a bit of rush to get them to the gallows. Mary Surratt, to whatever extent she was guilty was rushed along with the others, leaving a legacy of questions and debates around the true nature of her involvement.
Watching Democrats make fools of themselves going to bat for a scumbag illegal who was ordered deported and ignored that order is entertaining as hell. I am loving it. Now that more information is released on this POS is even more delicious. Father of the year my ass. LOL

. Mary Surratt, to whatever extent she was guilty was rushed along with the others, leaving a legacy of questions and debates around the true nature of her involvement.”
This statement does not match the facts of the case.
The “rushed along” and “legacy of questions and debates” are bogus arguments by those who want to profess her innocence.
“True nature of her involvement” ignores the law. it is really irrelevant how “much” of a co-conspirator she was, it suffices she WAS a co-conspirator in a plot to assassinate the President. If she did not want to be “involved” she should have reported the other conspirators. By not doing so it allowed the plot to proceed, and justice was done when she was hung.
All the “nuances” are just an attempt to defend the indefensible.
And “to whatever extent she was guilty” sounds like “just a little bit pregnant”.
Mary Surratt was found guilty by a military commission for her role in the conspiracy of the assassination of President Lincoln. Five members of the all male military commission, a majority, asked that President Andrew Johnson give a life sentence in prison. He didn’t. She was hung.
Dr. Samuel Mudd, also had met John Wilkes Booth and two of his conspirators several times before the assassination, and set Booth’s broken leg, was also found guilty of conspiring with Booth, aiding and abetting Booth for his broken leg, as well as with the conspirators for the assassination of Lincoln and given a life time prison sentence.
Dr. Mudd was pardoned by the same President Andrew Johnson just a few years later in 1869.
you miss my point jason, you say “she WAS a co-conspirator” but that is the very point in question that could have been established with certainty either way with a more competent and thorough trial. I am not trying to profess her innocence. I think she probably knew at least something. But that’s the point of a competent trial, to establish the facts of the matter–especially when execution is the outcome of guilt.
If all she heard was general rumblings of her guests and friends talking about getting Lincoln and the others in general terms…without any specific knowledge of an actual plot, then she might have gotten a sentence short of death. But I agree that if she was a co-conspirator who helped craft the plan, then she got exactly the justice she deserved.
After breaking my own leg, I have to admit that I am amazed that Booth was able to travel and avoid capture for so long. I wasn’t able to avoid my couch for the first 2 weeks.
ou miss my point jason, you say “she WAS a co-conspirator” but that is the very point in question that could have been established with certainty either way with a more competent and thorough trial. I am not trying to profess her innocence.”
Good. Because she was not innocent.
And the “was not established with certainty” is your opinion, the verdict said otherwise.
I think it HAS been established with certainty that she was a co-conspirator.
And
If all she heard was general rumblings of her guests and friends talking about getting Lincoln and the others in general terms…without any specific knowledge of an actual plot, then she might have gotten a sentence short of death.”
Zzzzz…. if my aunt had balls she would be my uncle.
and of course Surratt was tried with the other three in ONE trial instead of having her own trial.
And the question of certainty is not just my opinion. Even handed historians point out there were huge gaps in both the prosecution and defense that should have been filled in and could have been.
And one more point, because Lincoln was killed most people stop there and easily forget that the plot itself was far more diabolical. The plan also called for the assassinations of vice president Johnson and Secretary of State Seward. The guy who was supposed to kill Johnson got too drunk to do the job and Seward somehow survived multiple stab wounds in the attempted killing.
This was unlike any other plot in terms of the danger to the country with the potential elimination of the three top officials. So I totally get the urgency for justice.
Let’s not forget Mary Surratt’s son was also a conspirator. But of course, she knew nothing, saw nothing, heard nothing.
“John Harrison Surratt, Jr. (1844-1916) John Surratt was one of Booth’s most valuable and capable conspirators. He was a Confederate spy with a college education who ran mail and correspondence across Union lines. He also had contacts with Confederate Secret Service agents in Canada. Surratt introduced David Herold and George Atzerodt to Booth. He also brought Lewis Powell into Booth’s orbit. The tavern in Maryland and boarding house in Washington owned by his mother, Mary Surratt, served as safe houses and planning locations for Booth and his conspirators. John Surratt took part in the failed abduction attempt on Abraham Lincoln in March, 1865.”
and this little tidbit.
Following the assassination, John Wilkes Booth and David Herold stopped for supplies at the Surratt Tavern in Surrattsville (now Clinton), Maryland. They met John M. Lloyd, who was leasing the tavern from Mrs. Surratt. Earlier on the day of the assassination, she rode down to the tavern and handed Lloyd a package that Booth had given her earlier that morning. According to Lloyd, she asked him to “have those shooting irons ready,” referring to guns hidden behind a false wall of the tavern.“
Again, of course, she knew nothing, saw nothing, heard nothing.
Jason, Dr. Mudd met with the co-conspirators several times before the assassination specifically at a church. But more to the point, Dr. Mudd didn’t report the Booth situation to the authorities well past 24 hours to perhaps give Booth a ‘running start’ with his broken leg.
”The DC Circuit Court of Appeals late Wednesday evening partially blocked Judge Chutkan’s order that barred EPA Chief Lee Zeldin from clawing back billions of dollars from Joe Biden‘s EPA slush fund.
The three-judge panel: Pillard (Obama), Katsas (Trump) and Rao (Trump) stayed Judge Chutkan’s order requiring Citibank to disburse the funds by Thursday (today).”
Mary Surratt appeared to definitely be a sympathizer to the Confederacy. However her guilt, in conspiring with the Lincoln assassination, is based more on assumptions than real evidence. So, I am sticking with my original premise that she should not have been hanged.
Mary’s son had some friends and asked mom if they could stay at her place. Mom said sure. Definitely grounds for a hanging, eh?
Did Mary participate other than having customers who killed the President? If not, the owners of the joint where Luigi stayed getting ready to kill Mr. Insurance better watch out.
Biden allowed 2 million illegals to sign on to SS. Perhaps these new safeguards will help to thwart the misise/abuse of these funds.
”The new technology identifies suspicious activity in telephone claims. It analyzes patterns and anomalies within a person’s account. Any irregularities detected will require the claimant to complete in-person identity proofing at a Social Security office. The claim will not be processed without identity verification.
Originally, SSA was going to prohibit new claims or bank changes from taking place over the phone.
Now, however, this new phone technology allows SSA to maintain security without denying claimants who may be unable to file online or visit an office in person.”
But more to the point, Dr. Mudd didn’t report the Booth situation to the authorities well past 24 hours to perhaps give Booth a ‘running start’ with his broken leg.”
Maybe. In any event, finding and killing Booth a few days earlier wouldn’t have helped Lincoln.

Surratt was the perfect female version of Sergeant Schultz.
If you want to whine about miscarriage of justice, don’t look a Mary Surratt, who was guilty as hell and hanged for good reason, look at the fact her son was acquitted (hung jury) and never served any time.
You can bet he would have been sentence to hang too by the military court.
John Harrison Surratt Jr. (April 13, 1844 – April 21, 1916) was an American Confederate spy who was accused of plotting with John Wilkes Booth to kidnap U.S. President Abraham Lincoln; he was also suspected of involvement in the Abraham Lincoln assassination. His mother, Mary Surratt, was convicted of conspiracy by a military tribunal and hanged; she owned the boarding house that the conspirators used as a safe house and to plot the scheme.
He eluded arrest following the assassination by fleeing to Canada and then to Europe. He thus avoided the fate of the other conspirators, who were hanged. He served briefly as a Pontifical Zouave, but was recognized and arrested. He escaped to Egypt but was eventually re-arrested and extradited. By the time of his trial, the statute of limitations had expired on most of the potential charges. He was tried in civilian court in 1867 in Washington D.C. and was not convicted due to a hung jury. He was never tried again.”
How DID Obama end up with a SS # from CT that was previously issued to a person there who died before he was eligible for SS,, but who had moved to HA before he died?
Were there “Federal assets” in the boarding house getting those harmless Confederate sympathizers to go out and kill Lincoln, Johnson, and Seward against their will?
The birthright citizenship case will be heard by the Supreme Court on May 15. The court was not under any pressure to act – two (I believe) appellate courts have let stand the orders of various district courts barring Big Orange from enforcing his executive order. The Court could have just let those play out further.
It could mean they want to deliver a 9-0 beat down to Trump and get this over with. It could also mean four of them think the case is important enough to handle on an emergency basis now. Or it could mean that Trump’s got a shot.
Chris Van Hollan is a foolishly shallow politician.
