What does the Department of Education actually do? Is there anything worth keeping?

They collect a bunch of statistics that used to be collected by HEW (back when there was an HEW). They administer whatever took the place of No-Child-Left-behind.
They pass a bunch of money along to states and cities that they like – most of which have abysmally bad school systems.
Oh, and they administer the FAFSA system – a criminal enterprise in which the government forces all college age students and their parents to reveal exactly how much they can afford for college AND then they pass along that information to the universities so that they can engage in first degree price discrimination.
The FAFSA system alone is almost entirely responsible for the tripling of the real cost of a college education since 1980.

Oh, did I forget to mention that by threatening to withhold monies that are supposed to go to the states they force the states: 1) to discourage or ban charter schools; 2) to allow teachers to unionize; 3) to force each school system to have many non-teaching professionals to make sure that they comply with the blizzard of federal laws (that are enforced by the Dept of Education).

So much terrible and inaccurate reporting on today’s 5-4 SCOTUS decision. AP, CNN, ABC, Reuters, WaPo, etc. I haven’t found one yet that gets the nuance in the order — that Judge Ali was told to fix his prior order in two significant respects prior to issuing a new one.
