Democrat Rep. Robert Garcia says Democrats need to fight Elon Musk with “actual weapons,” says it needs to be done for “democracy.” “I think is really important, and what the American public wants is for us to bring actual weapons to this bar fight.
The Reagan Revolution charted a new path forward for Republican electoral dominance. The Republican party found a way to squander it.
If someone had told me on January 21, 1989, that Republicans would only win the popular vote once more in the next 36 years, I would’ve considered that person nuts.
So, right now, things look promising in some demographics; but history suggests that, post-Trump, the party will revert to form and give away the gains.
Nothing lasts forever in politics. The GOP owned the White House from the end of the 19th century until 1932 with the exception of Wilson. The Democrats won 5 Presidential elections in a row starting in 1932. The GOP won 5 of 6 starting in 1968.
Flaunting her profound ignorance of how even Obama floated the idea, ABC News’s Joy Behar claims Trump wants to ax the penny because he’s “jealous of Lincoln”
Nice dodge, Jason. You said the reason the Trump opportunity might be squandered is there are no core values.
I asked why Reagan’s Revolution was squandered so quickly. Your response was a personal attack, which means you don’t have an answer. At least one that you like.
“The Founders would all have been hanged as traitors at the end of a very short revolution without foreign military aid from France and Spain. Good thing those countries did not avoid foreign entanglements.”
Neither France nor Spain helped the colonies because they supported the American desire for independence from the English throne. Both of those countries were governed by monarchs and their ruling governments viewed masonic ideas of government, including both democracy and republicanism as diametrically opposed to God’s order.
Rather, they were constantly at war with Great Britain, both in Europe and the Americas, and only supported the colonists because they viewed the Revlutionary War as just another front in those centuries’ old conflicts.
Problem with history-revisionistic neo-cons is they believe everyone else is as uneducated as they are regarding American history, governance and politics.
Let me take a crack at your question, Chicon. Since at least the 1960s, there has been a split in the Republican party – between what you might call traditional conservatives: people like Nelson Rockefeller, the Bushes, Mitt Romney; and the radicals: Barry Goldwater, Reagan, and now Trump.
One reason the energy from the Reagan revolution was lost so quickly is that the GOP put the conservatives back in power. They have been in charge ever since – well, until the emergence of Trump. Over a period of six years, Trump (helped by the never-trumpers) has destroyed the traditional wing of the Republican party. For the first time in my lifetime, there is only one wing. There is a new name for the traditional conservatives: Democrats.
Back in 2016, several right-of-center economists, like Glenn Hubbard and Gregory Mankiw, announced that they were supporting Hillary Clinton. Over the next four years, Bill Kristol, Mitt Romney, John Kasich, and many others leaked away from the GOP because they could not stand Trump. I can’t blame them for not liking the man – I don’t either – but voting for and supporting Democrats is inexcusable.
So now those of us who call ourselves Republicans have no real choice. Fortunately, this new party is doing almost exactly what I want my party to do – reduce the size and power of the federal government, let people succeed or fail on their own merits, and represent that ‘shining city on a hill’ that Reagan offered to us.
Problem with history-revisionistic neo-cons is they believe everyone else is as uneducated as they are regarding American history, governance and politics.”
Zzzzzz…..
When you take the wrong lessons from History like you do, it is hard to make the case of how “educated” you are.
BillW said….”this new party is doing almost exactly what I want my party to do – reduce the size and power of the federal government, let people succeed or fail on their own merits, and represent that ‘shining city on a hill’ that Reagan offered to us.”
I fully agree, Bill. I think the party (post-Reagan) drifted from this quote exactly.
The party drifted away …. perhaps because the George HW Bush and the traditionals never believed it in the first place. I still recall ‘voodoo economics’ from the 1980 campaign.
I respect Walt, DW and Vic. They expressed a desire for a better tone here, and Bitter asked to try out a truce (at least on name-calling).
The posts from last night and this morning confirm that the effort is not being sustained. Since I don’t believe in unilateral disarmament, the bombing will resume tomorrow.
and represent that ‘shining city on a hill’ that Reagan offered to us.”
Good analysis by BillW on where we are and why.
I don’t agree that what we have now is Reagan’s vision, sorry.
And I don’t agree that if you are not a Cult member you are a Democrat (although yes, I agree the Bill Kristol’s of the world are now Dems).
But I do agree that the R party is now Trump’s party and there is basically only one wing. It is one reason I don’t identify with the party anymore.
I have written here extensively on where I thought the R party should go if it wanted to survive. For that I was insulted as a “populist” by the Amoral Scumbags of the world. In my view, the path forward for the party was as a diverse working class party including rural, exurban, suburban and urban voters. I didn’t have to agree with some of the policies that would make this happen to know this was a question of survival as a national party.
Trump has succeeded in achieving such a coalition. Whether it can be sustained post-Trump is anyone’s guess.
I will never agree that Ukraine should have surrendered to Putin without fighting or that the U.S. should not have provided military aid. Is that a truce violation?

Here is how you catch Chicon with his lies.
HE was the one that suggested Trumpism might not last.
I then suggested it could be due to a lack of principles and core values which characterizes populist movements.
HE then suggested that is why Reagan’s Revolution didn’t last, so it is clear that HE thinks Reagan had no core values or principles.
HE brought up Reagan to trash him, I didn’t say anything about Reagan.
See how it works?
When you are intellectually dishonest and you want to use this site for trash talk, be prepared to be challenged.
