I heard a comment earlier by Clay Travis I thought made sense.
Yes, we know training helicopter pilots is vital and important including night training.
But couldn’t the Army find somewhere else to do it that doesn’t involve flying around a very congested urban setting airport in an area that already has a lot of helicopter traffic by the WH and other agencies?
many people have been saying that jason. The last thing a commercial pilot needs to be worried about while on final approach to the runway is looking left and right for training helicopters.
The female pilot was actually commanding the flight, although the other pilot was an instructor. If she was actually at least 100 feet too high and off course, she will be the primary cause of the accident.
I hope Trump does not blame DEI for that, there are a lot of female helicopter pilots in the Army and National Guard.
Army helicopter pilot here. Based on what we’ve seen so far, my guess is the PAT Blackhawk helicopter pilots confirmed visual on the wrong aircraft and likely never even saw the aircraft they crashed into.
How unlucky you have to be to die in this accident is heart breaking. A half second more or less would have avoided the crash, had either aircraft been going a mile an hour slower or faster, or had departure of either craft been a half second or so earlier or later.
At 200 miles an hour you are moving like 300 ft a second.
The greatest likelihood is that all the victims were killed more or less instantly. The blunt force trauma of impact would have been more than enough to kill everyone or at the very least render them unconscious, as those in the back of the plane might not have felt the impact as strongly as at the point of collision. But none of these victims drowned. They were dead before they entered the water.
Apparently the pilot of the helicopter was female, and the military is refusing to release her name. They have, however, released names and photos of the other members of her crew.
Well, at least when they hit the water. Hitting water from 300 ft is like hitting concrete. Also it was only 7 ft deep, so the plane hit the bottom of the river also, the impact would not be survivable.
It is interesting that this is also the intersection where crowds gathered after the Eagles won the Super Bowl as well as NFC Championship Games. Also the World Series in 1980 and 2008.
The male pilot was an Instructor Pilot administering an annual proficiency check evaluation to the female pilot. In both the military and in civilian aviation, the Instructor Pilot is the aircraft commander (military term) or pilot in command (FAA term in civil aviation), irrespective of the crew position of the pilot be evaluated.
Good to hear you are ok now, Marv. I’m pretty much the same. I have lost 15 pounds in the last 2 weeks because I started an insulin pump and gave up snacks because I am too stupid to count carbs.
Glad to hear that you’re able to manage your condition a little bit better.
I lost about 8 lbs myself. Caught the flu which devolved into a serious loss of electrolytes (syndrome inadequate anti-diuretic hormone). Spent 8 days in the ICU. Doctors said the normal protocol in that situation is very slowly bring the electrolytes back in balance via IV fluids, shots etc.
Understand about the instructor pilot role. The article may have meant the pilot was “commanding the helicopter” because she was piloting it at the time.
“Apparently the pilot of the helicopter was female, and the military is refusing to release her name. They have, however, released names and photos of the other members of her crew”
Normally the family cannot stop the military from divulging names. Not releasing it is highly unusual once positive identification is made. I don’t see hwo it won’t come out. Everyone at Fort Belvoir will know who she is and it will be leaked.
The family should not have the right to keep her name private. She was 100 feet above the 200 foot flight ceiling and also was not following the prescribed flight path. She has forfeited the right of privacy, alive or dead.

The Army is withholding the name of the female pilot at “the family’s request”.
This is unusual.

there is also the control tower angle, apparently there was understaffing at the time of the tragic collision.

A combination of errors by the chopper pilot and the controller (partially caused by understaffing) seems like a reasonable take…

Yep, the video shows another aircraft taking off at the same time, most likely that is the aircraft the pilot thought the tower was referencing.
The tower should have mentioned where the CRJ was, like “traffic is at 10 o’clock” rather than just “do you have a visual”.
