And so this thread is started as a contest to see who is first at correctly guessing either which of our 50 states is shown in the picture, or which foreign country. The plan for this thread starter is to provide within the picture a clue or two to help you identify.

I rarely agree with the ACLU, but I hope they win this lawsuit. The part in bold is what I particularly agree with.
CONCORD, N.H. — Immigrants’ rights advocates today sued the Trump administration over its executive order that seeks to strip certain babies born in the United States of their U.S. citizenship.
The case was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union, ACLU of New Hampshire, ACLU of Maine, ACLU of Massachusetts, Asian Law Caucus, State Democracy Defenders Fund, and Legal Defense Fund on behalf of organizations with members whose babies born on U.S. soil will be denied citizenship under the order, including New Hampshire Indonesian Community Support, League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), and Make the Road New York. The lawsuit charges the Trump administration with flouting the Constitution’s dictates, congressional intent, and longstanding Supreme Court precedent.

Birthright citizenship is part of what makes the United States the strong and dynamic nation that it is. This order seeks to repeat one of the gravest errors in American history, by creating a permanent subclass of people born in the U.S. who are denied full rights as Americans. We will not let this attack on newborns and future generations of Americans go unchallenged. The Trump administration’s overreach is so egregious that we are confident we will ultimately prevail,” said Anthony D. Romero, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union.
Birthright citizenship is the principle that every baby born in the United States is a U.S. citizen. The Constitution’s 14th Amendment guarantees the citizenship of all children born in the United States (with the extremely narrow exception of children of foreign diplomats) regardless of race, color, or ancestry. Specifically, it states that “all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside.”
The 14th Amendment was ratified in 1868, overturning the Dred Scott decision that denied Black Americans the rights and protections of U.S. citizenship. In 1898, the U.S. Supreme Court confirmed in United States v. Wong Kim Ark that children born in the United States to immigrant parents were entitled to U.S. citizenship, and the principle has remained an undisturbed constitutional bedrock for over a century.“

If you want to keep illegal immigrants from having American babies, then stop them at the border.
NYC’s strategy of WE ARE WINNING resulted in 20 million illegals. Their children WILL be US citizens.
But maybe, just maybe we weren’t winning.
There were plenty of opportunities to enact comprehensive immigration reform that would have secured the border in exchange for granting working permits for millions of illegals already here.
But the immigration deadenders called it “amnesty” and wanted all or nothing. They got nothing.
We should have a prediction thread here on how many illegals will actually be deported. My prediction is less than 5%.

Despite all his personal flaws, Trump became the symbol/lightning rod that the majority of people who were upset with federal government growth, overreach, incompetence and instances of corruption/ They gravitated to Trump and pinned their hopes on him being able to change that. Trump became the standard bearer for these folks. Lots of people, for lots of reasons, do not trust the federal government anymore. They interpreted all the legal and courtroom cases against Trump as politically motivated lawfare by the Ds and anti-Trumpers to ruin him financially and politically. That did not work and only further energized those who distrusted federal government.
The gravitation of power to the federal government has been creeping along steadily for decades (creation of Dept. of Energy, Dept. of Education) but the speed accelerated with the U.S. federal government response to 9-11, the Obama’s presidency and forcing people to buy an insurance product among other things), the CROVID epidemic under Trump’s first term, and obviously with the Biden 4 years of pushing for DEI, normalization attempt regarding LBGTQ-EIEIO ism and lifestyle, pro-transgender crap at the detriment of women’s rights and women’s sports, etc, end run around attempt about parental rights, edicts about what % of all cars have to be all electric, war on fossil fuels, less than adequate federal response to hurricane Helene victims in NC, etc. What has forever been thought of as common sense, went out the window when lefts are in control.
The growth of presidents setting national policy through EOs, the failure to the courts to rein in federal overreach that went beyond what the law stated, the complicit left-wing dominated MSM pushing for everything liberal, timidness of elected Rs to be articulate and fight back effectively against insanity and just go along so they would continue to be reelected, the failure of the few moderate Ds to stand up against the liberal D mob rushing headlong into leftism insanity, the failure of the voting public to vote intelligently and think about the issues and instead allow themselves be herded along by the ever present emotive charges by the leftists of “racism” and every R candidates being called racists, homophobes, sexists, against women’s rights, etc. This is true whether it is about George Floyd and the many destructive riots, the abortion issue, immigration, affirmative action, DEI crap and other issues. Much pushback against the federal overreach has occurred as many, many states (probably an unprecedented number) have enjoined lawsuits against the federal government, related to Obamacare and the federal govt forcing people to buy a product, immigration and a whole host of other issues. And of course, we now have tons of data that has surfaced about CROVID that we now know the federal government was lying to us about.
The left has successfully rendered Congress ineffective concerning the wielding of their constitutional power, so the power vacuum was filled by the federal bureaucracy and activist presidents. It was even filled by left wing dominated cities and states, who declared themselves, in violation of the constitution, sanctuary cities–and got away with doing so without repercussion, and declared themselves nuclear free zones where nothing nuclear could be transported by road or rail through their jurisdictions.

Also, if one was to look at the link from Federalist Society, there is a clear difference of opinion that should be clarified and/or rectified. I tend to agree with those who want to end the practice of allowing illegal immigrants to come here, have a child, and then depart back to their native lands, where the child would then be a United States citizen, but would be “subject to the jurisdiction thereof” of the country they moved back to.
I stated clearly that I make an exception for LEGAL immigrants who, while in the process of naturalization, give birth to a child before the process is complete. I would think that child, once the parent completes the naturalization process, would also then become a citizen.
Bitterlaw also mentioned the original opposition came by those who opposed citizenship for blacks. I think that would be one more factor in favor of my position. I think that a black person, possibly a former slave, should definitely have been been granted birthright citizenship, for several reasons, one of them being that he actually lived here, and was “subject to the jurisdiction thereof” of the United States, with no allegiance to any other country, compared to an ILLEGAL immigrant who comes here, has a child, then immediately departs back to their home country with the child. How Bitterlaw doesn’t see a difference between a former slave and/or marginalized black freeperson living in the United States getting citizenship vs an illegal immigrant makes me wonder about his thought process.
The best part about jason’s “racist xenophobe” argument would be if Justice Thomas ended up agreeing with my position, which I believe there is a good possibility he would.
That said – still believe it is a good argument to have. AND, since there is ambiguity in the law, it should be clarified.
If certain Republicans want to join Democrats in allowing ILLEGAL immigrants to continue getting citizenship and/or benefits quicker and easier than LEGAL immigrants, than let’s see who they are. I think that is a conversation worth having.
I look forward to jason welcoming in a child of Vlad Putin, Chairman Xi and No Korea’s Kim, if they want to go that route.

Actually, had a friend in grammar and high school, who was born in London, dad was living there for a Wall Street firm.
He was an American citizen at birth, BECAUSE his parents American citizenship was conferred onto him, despite being born in another country.

When I come to think about it, my wife works in a grammar school, where a child (8th grade now, came back in 5th), who is black, was born overseas (France) to her American-citizen-parents. Speaks fluent French, Spanish and English. Parents taught her English, nanny spoke to her in French, housekeepers spoke to her in Spanish.
Her citizenship was conferred onto her from her parents.

Despite not winning the contest here, I have had an EXCELLENT day.
Completed all HOME chores here, took my snowblower wheel in to get fixed (@ no charge), navigated shopping at 5 stores and got all my groceries, etc successfully, and found both my Black and Mild originals and Sweets for 99 and 89 cents per box (instead of the 1.39 per cigar at reg. price). Also getting lots of likes and comments on my various humorous Facebook posts I put up last night.

Or maybe you are ignoring what the writers of the amendment meant when they wrote it. Wouldn’t be the first time bureaucrats “interpreted” a statute incorrectly, and there should be a clarification.
That said, once again, I think it is a good conversation to have.
Any Republicans who think that ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS coming here and deserve the same benefits and rights as freed slaves, let them stand up and be counted.
One other thing: On the national security front, It is pretty clear that individuals/groups are using our laws against us, similar to what they are doing in the UK, France, Sweden, Germany, etc. People actively come here, by plane, have a child, and then go back to their home country, where the child is raised, with his American citizenship to be used at a later date, if needed. Of course, many of those who do this do not have nefarious reasons for doing so. BUT, there is enough of a risk that the rules should be changed, and as well, the current immigration laws should be more vigorously enforced so that illegals can’t enter as easily as they do.

Why do I need to have an issue with someone to think a situation is wrong?
I do not have any issue with legal immigration.
I do have an issue with people who believe a border should never be closed, and/or the numbers of LEGAL immigrants should never be lowered if the situation changes.
A nation should be able to look at a situation and say “Stop, we can’t accept any more people at this time.”
We have done it in the past, we should probably do it again, until we straighten out the current situation.
Draw the line today – if you are on the legal immigration pathway by 01/31/2025, that will be the last date to sign up until the administration says so.
What is wrong with such an action? Are we not a sovereign nation?

It might be interesting to consider this possibility: A child is born in the US to parents who work at an embassy of another country. Even though the child was born here, he or she would be ‘subject to a foreign power’. Does that child have birthright citizenship? Perhaps not.
To insert my nose even further into your personal quarrel, regardless of how you interpret the 14th Amendment, the President has no role in establishing rules for citizenship. It is not his job. Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution enumerates one of the powers of Congress as “to establish an uniform Rule of Naturalization.” The President has no such enumerated power.
So, DJT will certainly be told by the courts that this specific Executive Order will not stand.

The far, far right guy who was elected to the WV House of Delegates to fill an open seat on the district where I NOW LIVE…I predicted he would be a paint in the arse. So far, even before he was sworn in, the governor was hinting he would call a special session. Find out later that big tech approached WV with a proposal to build 4 data centers in WV including at least one on an abandoned coal mine site. All they need is electricity, which we have. They would pay MANY TENS OF MILLIONS IN PROPERTY TAX EACH YEAR TO COUNT GOVTS WHERE THEY WERE LOCATED. The big tech was not asking for any tax breaks or anything. But the delegate elect sends out social media emails and things demanding the voters deluge the governor with their opposition to a special session to “benefit left wing big tech companies and their billionaire owner”. The special session never got off the ground for other reasons and legislators never called into session. But the delegate elected claims credit for stopping it. Another issue talked about in WV is to allow county referendums where the local voters would decide if they wanted to add a 1 cent sales tax in their county, with the revenue staying in the county and going to the county government to address local issues like providing fire and ambulance services. A couple other local goofball R “power to the people” legislators also oppose allowing any referendum that might end up increasing taxes. The new nut job delegate elect is on a social media campaign opposing “this tax increase.” HE CLAIMS to be in favor of local control and power to the voters, but does not trust the voters and fears they may approve the 1 cent sales tax increase. He is blistering any local legislator who favors this and is calling them all sorts of names like Fake Republicans, liberal tax grabber, etc.

interesting take on Data Centers. While they do use large amounts of power (energy), that power can be redirected in crisis time as they have protocols for low power operations in times of need.
Additionally, they do create vast income to the state, not only in taxes paid, but also in jobs created which revitalize communities that are struggling. Just the building of four data centers would pump over $1B into the local economies with jobs, material acquisition, ancillary income to local businesses, et al.
If WV still has a shot at those data centers I would go and implore the Gov to overlook this idiot and have the special session needed.

I find thus funny, but my wife is upset with me about this.
Our local tri county area has a group that provides a Facebook page on the weather. It is a good site. They get very touchy though and quickly ban people who ask dumb questions–like “how much snow will I get in Gettysburg” (they ban them because they are NOT IN THE WV TRICOUNTY AREA). Last year, they banned over 600 people from commenting.
After the last snow, they put up a post that said, “Send us your measurements and locations.” Of course I knew they were asking about SNOW totals, but I could not help my stupid self. A made a comment that said “I am about 5’10” tall and weight about 165.” Someone else said their measurements were 36-24-36.
I got banned (after they called me an ass) and they deleted my comment.. I thought it was funny but my wife was horrified I did such a think. She keeps telling me I have to learn to think things in my head and not type…

The Lone Ranger rode into town and stopped at the restaurant. The owner said “Well if it isn’t the Lone Ranger again. Do you want the usual?” The Lone Ranger said, “Yes. Scrambled eggs and bacon for me, and a bowl of curds and a bowl of whey for my horse Silver.”
The owner went in the kitchen to fill the order and discovered he had eggs, bacon and plenty of curds–but was out of whey. He brought the food out to the Lone Ranger and said:
“I owe Silver a whey.”

AND THAT, my friends,
is why the Lone Ranger always rode off and said, “I owe Silver a whey!” to REMIND himself to go back to that restaurant and get Silver that whey he was still owed.
