Looks like prospects for the nuclear deal with Iran are gone. Trump gave them until Saturday to declare the strait open. They have responded by announcing the strait is closed and firing on two more commercial ships, one of which is on fire and the 23 man crew has abandoned the ship. All traffic through the strait has now ceased.
Sooo, let’s review shall we. We lifted the blockade of Iranian ports in return for them opening the strait to commercial traffic which they didn’t do. They got something and we threw away our leverage card. Wonderful. Brilliant.

Administration sources are now saying that perhaps the Iranians aren’t serious about a deal. Well, no shit Sherlock.

In 1997 Paul Allen bought the Seattle Seahawks for $194 million. And now his ownership group (Allen died in 2018) has now sold the Seahawks for a record $9.6 billion.
Phil, to be fair, the American public at large does not have the stomach for a conflict with Iran, even one that means an only a temporary rise in gas prices. I blame the people as much as I do Trump’s vacillations.

Sorry Phil but you are reading the Iran situation completely wrong. You are trying to condense a 50+ year old very complex problem into some kind of simplistic win-lose talking point immediatism. It’s like trying to call the Superbowl based on the first set of downs.
Trump is not being suckered or fooled. He is trying to make a long term deal that is acceptable to Israel and the Gulf States and our allies. It is a monumental tasks that will have a lot of ups and downs, and eventually might not succeed. He is dealing with people who don’t negotiate in good faith and/or might not always have the power needed to negotiate.
Trump has decided that the end result is worth the trials and tribulation in the interim. I think he is on the right track. There is no easy formula here. Maybe the solution is just to bomb the heck out of Iran forever, but I think Trump’s attempt to avoid that is worth trying.
I am sorry to see Lindsey Graham’s foreign policy expertise silenced. In my view he was the most competent foreign policy expert in the senate.
Contrary to many (or most) of the current R party, Graham understood the role of the US in world and understood our safety and prosperity is directly dependent upon defending our interests and the interests of our allies around the world.
I think he was giving Trump good advice that will be sorely missed.
