Cardinals elect the pope They rise up through local dioceses that can be influenced by the local parishioners. The reason there are so many liberal/communist cardinals is because so many Catholics have allowed leftists to take over their local dioceses.
Letters to the editors won’t change a Papal position. But if local parishioners started taking stands against Marxism you can bet that eventually the message will get through to the Vatican.
I was not raised Catholic but I grew up in a Catholic country. Even then I remember my parents talking about “red” priests advocating Communist doctrine. Commie Francis and the new communist Pope are products of local dioceses.
The idea that Catholic parishioners have no say in who leads them is stupid. Same for any church. Jews are split into three main categories, Reform, Conservative and Orthodox. These divisions reflect the will of the members.
Now, maybe most US Catholics are now liberals and accepting of the far left Vatican leadership. But even if that is the case, why not try to change it if you are not in agreement?

I said local parishioners have influence in local dioceses and can make their voices heard. If local parishioners stop attending church or stop making donations, that will certainly be noted. I didn’t say the Catholic Church was a democracy, far from it.
I do know Catholics who have switched churches because of disagreements with the priest or the way the Mass was run or other reasons. That is a form of influence.
As for the the Popes not being communists, you are living in la la land. Francis explicitly said wealth and money and profit were the root of all evil and that the capitalist system was evil. He continuously attacked businesses as evil exploiters of the poor. He ignored the fact Capitalism has lifted billions of people out of poverty, while communism has done the opposite.

Finished ny first tour as Co guide on Virginia’s Iand adjacent to Harper’s Ferry, wv. I was tasked with the history part. I do lots of local color regarding the history and how the Duke and Harper families (my ancestors) were involved in the Harper’s Ferry area way back in the 1700 and 1800s.
I enjoyed the research and learned a lot that I was able to share

I watched a lecture about Harry Truman and George Washington given by reenactors. Proves my point. The parishioners in this case want Latin Mass, if they didn’t there probably wouldn’t be one. They are influencing the church in some manner.
Same could be done if enough parishioners rebelled against the Communist doctrine permeating large sections of the Catholic Church.
In my view, communism will eventually destroy the Catholic Church, because the people that believe in it are not really supporters of any religion, they are using it to further their agenda.

I am sure if the Pope was pressed he would concede that the violence against Israel and against the Iranian people by their government is also wrong and should stop. But this is the way Popes often frame this situation. Not surprisingly, it comes back to world-view and theology. Most Catholic theologians see man as basically good. I disagree and see man as hopelessly depraved outside of the work of Christ. But the Pope sees the actions of the terrorists as an anomaly because they are good at heart and just need to be shown a good example. So the west, the USA, and Trump in particular should show the example by being nice them. Then they will see the light and stop misbehaving, because they are good in their hearts.

Not that I am one that particularly believes that way but some have believed that the Papacy is the Antichrist or where the Antichrist will come from (Luther, Wycliffe, Knox, Calvin, perhaps even King Henry the Eighth). Others have often said that the Antichrist will ‘appear as an angel of light’ deceiving many and will come from Rome.

That is why he completely disqualified himself from being president when he pardoned a prisoner who went right out and did the same thing again. I don’t argue with that. The “theological framework” is that the Church is “on the side of the poor” and doing God’s work for the poor. When the Pope attacks capitalism as the source of all evils, he is entirely on board with a basic Marxist tenet, which is that capitalism cannot be reformed, it must be replaced because it is inherently exploitative.
When the Pope attacks wealth accumulation and profit, he is in effect attacking private property and private means of production in favor of state ownership and state controlled means of production.
When the Pope advocates for class warfare, pitting the poor against the rich, he is in effect enacting another key aspect of Marxism, where the working class overthrows the system to establish a “classless society”.

I do not agree with the Pope on illegal immigration, his spin on American foreign policy, or capital punishment. I also support the right of anybody to tell Trump to F off because Trump tells everybody to F off several times a day. I thought Trump could be a great President if he could occasionally STFU and stop going to war with everybody, including his own supporters.
Reagan was a great President because he lead others rather than trashing them. Reagan worked with Pope JP2, Thatcher, and NATO. Trump is incapable or working with anybody for long because he is so desperate to be the only one on Earth who matters. Even when Trump does something good, and he often does, he makes it about his perceived greatness rather than the result.

I have said repeatedly that if I had been elected to Congress, I would have said Trump can F off every day on the floor of the House and then vote for his agenda. Trump got my vote 3 times to stop the Dem from winning the White House. He never got my vote because of his personality, terrible speaking skills, or alleged sense of humor. I am relieved every day he is in office because he is better than a Democrat who admits they are a Democrat. That’s it..

And unfortunately, I did not attend any elite prep schools, I went to public schools in the country I was raised. I am guilty of attending an elite college and graduate school, sue me.

I think my criticism is actually constructive. My view is that as the church gets involved in promoting economic systems (Marxism) and world government and energy policy etc it is planting the seeds of its own demise. While these ideas are popular with a certain political class and the majority of the world’s media, the people it most appeals to are not friends of the church, they are using it to promote their agenda.

Unfortunately, there is very little capitalism in South America so I agree that it is not perfect.
But it is not perfect not because it is capitalist, quite the contrary. For decades these countries have been ruled by corrupt populists and leftists, not capitalists. Possible exceptions are Bolsonaro in Brazil (now in jail) and the current Presidents of Argentina and Chile, Milei and Kast.

I did not tell you to switch religions. There are plenty of woke protestant orders and there were Jews who voted for Mandani. There are even Jews for Jesus supposedly.
I disagreed with your idea that parishioners cannot influence local churches and dioceses with their views, participation, and donations.
Communists like Francis emerged from local churches that preached the LIberation Theology. If a priest started preaching this at your church, would there be a reaction? Maybe not, but in some places there probably would be.

Frankly, I don’t even understand what the differences are. I know Episcopalians are the”closest” to Catholicism, and that Catholics follow a leader (the Pope) while Protestants follow the bible directly. And yes, the Eucharist, which Protestants view as only symbolic. But beyond that, not much.

Not from me. I would take communion and go home at the end of Mass. I have never seen a priest transferred because of their homilies. I attend the church closest to me. I’m not going shopping. I usually attend Mass and quietly seethe over the deaths in my family. I don’t go to Church for peace or comfort.

Of course, I realize defending western values was not the central purpose of NATO. It was a defensive alliance to deter the Soviet Union which had taken over eastern Europe. I get that. However, aside from the reduced threat with the collapse of the Soviet Union, the part that really irritates me is all the American taxpayer money that has to be spent bearing the brunt of defending a continent that is intent on committing suicide with their crazy immigration policies. Thirty years ago, the western democracies would not have gone out of their way to close their airspace to the America military in an Iranian operation. Now? They have to appease their Moslem voters so we get what we have now. A little cooperation would have been nice or at least can the lectures. Now we don’t even get that….and as their electorates get more and more Islamic we won’t even get that going forward.

Phil/Bitter, how about a compromise? We stop defending western Europe (Britain, France, Spain, and maybe Germany if they don’t get their act together) since they are generally useless on the military front (the UK, especially after Putin pulled off Channel Dash 2.0 and al the Royal Navy could muster was a fleet tanker to issue a strongly worded complaint). We then replace it with a defensive and perhaps even an offensive alliance with Italy, the Visegrad countries, the Balkans, Sweden, Finland, and the Baltic states. Heck, throw in Ukraine as well. Turkey probably isn’t worth the effort so long as Erdogan is in charge, but if having an opening on the Caucasian front is desirable, fine, throw him a few bones, too.

I would leave NATO as it is. Trump’s hatred of it walks out the door when he leaves. Again, while it would be nice if NATO was assisting us in this war, it is obligated to do so. As I asked before, if Spain attacks Bermuda, do we have to send an aircraft carrier to strike Hamilton and St. George?
