The arms market has been busy taking stolen armaments and those sold off from corrupt Ukrainian officials, giving them to hostile groups like Hamas. The ME was quiet over 3 years ago, but now the planet is full of chaos. Why didn’t our great intelligent departments pick up on the rumblings of this Hamas attack before it happened? Right now I would say given the choice… about 30-35 % of the GOP voters are on your side. Trumps totally committed numbers are in the twenties in IA and NH in polls that track that type of thing. On this point, we agree. Scalise is far preferable to Jordan. Jordan is a bomb thrower and his gruff, dour image will be a net negative with voters who might not want Trump, but would still prefer to vote for Republicans in House races.
As a caretaker Speaker to get the party through 2024, though, I would suggest Tom Cole. He’s eminently conservative and someone Democrats in the House respect. Of course, he won’t be the Speaker, though.
Whoever gets the Speaker job probably is just renting it, though. Democrats, especially because redistricting, should be favored to gain control of the House.

I never have described Trump as infallible. He made lots of mistakes, especially in hiring people who were basically against his presidency, the policies generated under it, and not disavowing the vaccine after all the harms were unveiled. In fact his personal defects are legendary, as well as all the obstacles thrown his way to destroy his presidency and beyond. However, more “good” was cultivated between 2017-2020 than bad. I certainly can’t make that claim about Biden, Obama and other presidents coming before him. Furthermore, in looking at the current field of R candidates, who have had limited governing experience in mostly their states, I think DJT remains the best candidate during our particularly troubled, challenging times.

The fact, though, Zelenskyy fired most of his defense Dept because of corruption is indicative of the deep seated corruption that has prevailed in the Ukrainian government long enough for it to achieve the title of 3rd most corrupt country in the world, even ahead of evil Russia. You don’t achieve such a standing by having honest leaders.

I am legitimately curious where this information comes from. I’ve done some searching and have only found some stories based on Russians who ended up with some of the weapons. I do not doubt that there are people trying to make money with these weapons. I just don’t see evidence that it is anything as major as you describe.

Ukraine is not ready to join the EU due to its being “corrupt at all levels of society,” Jean-Claude Juncker, the former European Commission president, said in unusually blunt statements to Germany’s Augsburger Allgemeine newspaper this week.
He also chastised current European officials for giving Ukrainians “false promises” over the future of their EU candidacy, saying that being admitted to the bloc would be “neither good for the EU nor for Ukraine.”
“Anyone who has had anything to do with Ukraine knows that this is a country that is corrupt at all levels of society. Despite its efforts, it is not ready for accession; it needs massive internal reform processes,” he said.
“You shouldn’t make false promises to the people in Ukraine who are up to their necks in suffering,” he explained. Juncker further emphasized, “I am very angry about some voices in Europe who are telling Ukrainians that they can become members immediately.”
The reform process and waves of European law packages countries are expected to adopt before they can hope to enter typically takes years or realistically over a decade.
Ukraine has long ranked as the most corrupt country in Europe and among the top in the world. US and European media have increasingly acknowledged this of late, and Juncker’s sudden boldness could be due to the general increase in press coverage of the issue.
Earlier this week, Ukrainian lawmaker Yaroslav Zheleznyak, first deputy chairman of the parliament committee on finance, admitted that corruption is a major issue which has played a part in the withholding of external aid, also in the wake of successful GOP-led efforts in Congress to strip Ukraine defense aid out of the stopgap bill.
“The biggest (public) complaint about us is corruption,” Zheleznyak conceded in a Sunday social media post. “We have to go through these 45 days without a major corruption scandal,” he stated. This comes even after Zelensky in the last two months fired a range of top officials, including his longtime defense minister and a half-dozen other top defense officials.

I am stunned that Israeli intelligence seemed not to know this was coming. They put bombs in cell phones of Hamas leaders, how could they not have enough spies infiltrated in Gaza to get a warning on this? You would think the Gaza border would be teeming with electronic warning equipment, how can guys in pickups just drive across into Israeli towns. Also when I was in Israel, there were armed civilians everywhere, the off duty soldiers carry their weapons into restaurants and cafes. I am surprised the civilian population in those border towns were not able to kill a lot of these terrorists even if the military was unprepared.

In recent months Hamas refused to join the much smaller Islamic Jihad in launching rockets against Israel, which seems to have convinced Israeli leaders that, at long last, the leading terror group in Gaza had decided to prioritize the welfare of its subjects over more futile rocket attacks.
Israel promptly reciprocated the de facto Hamas ceasefire by allowing thousands of Gazans to work in Israel—first 17,000, then 20,000, with the potential for many more. Their earnings were changing the lives of 100,000 family members with the possibility of even wider benefits. What was happening on the ground seemed to open a path toward tranquility for Israel and a degree of prosperity for Gaza.
Evidently it was all a delusion. Hamas, just like Arafat’s PLO, is willing to do everything for Palestine—and nothing at all for Palestinians.
Israel’s political misjudgments about Hamas’ intentions, especially in the context of recent hopeful movements toward further peace agreements with Arab countries including a deal with Saudi Arabia, may well have played a background role in lowering the country’s vigilance. But it is no excuse for the massive intelligence failure that allowed Hamas to pull off its deadly surprise offensive. Indeed, Israeli wishful thinking is not even relevant to Saturday’s disaster, because the 24/7 scrutiny of enemy doings and undoings to detect “threat indicators” is not supposed to be switched off for any reason, ever.
All the errors Israel made, in letting down its guard, the Biden Administration has done in spades. First, by letting the border be massively overrun by anyone and everyone, and then depleting our oil and ammunition reserves making us less prepared for our own sudden crisis. Finally, as we aim all our ire at Russia, giving our cash to Ukraine, Biden continues to buy oil from Russia and placate Iran who seeks Russia to mediate the Iran deal for us and trade with Russia. Who are we kidding when we excoriate a country but continue to play footsie with them, as we drain our own resources to fight Russia, fund it’s victim Ukraine and ignore calamities and suffering on our own home front. It’s crazy making thinking and policy making!
