Because our “Churchill” and ever-“popular” “leader of the Ukrainian resistance” could lose to either of them, according to all existing polling, especially commissioned by his own camp.
So Zelensky continues to publicly insist that elections cannot be held during wartime.
He simply fears losing power.
Because for him, losing office could mean losing everything — influence, money, the standing ovations from his Western brothers and sisters in crime, and, perhaps most inconveniently, the presidential immunity from having his “genius leadership” examined without the flattering lighting.

DW, Ukraine has long had a reputation of government corruption. Zelenskyy’s anti-corruption campaign message and promise to end it was why he was elected with over 70% of the vote. However, he did little about it, with early NYT reports of government officials participating in siphoning off funding meant for the war effort and its people. So, yes, initially he was seen as an ethical reformer. Now, however, he has grown into a Putin- like dictator who most of the Ukrainian people fear and hate. I think some here are so consumed by their Putin hatred, they are either unable to see or maybe admit that Zelenskyy has evolved into someone no different from the Russian tyrant they consider evil.

I propose that the election laws be changed to allow every U.S. citizen to vote–as long as they can prove they have A MINIMUM AMOUNT OF SENSE to vote.
If they cannot name the three branches of government, no ballot for you.
If you cannot correctly write in the names of the a majority of the 7 continents and 4 oceans of the world on a blank map, no ballot for you.
If you cannot correctly write in the names of at least 8 states on a blank map of the U.S., no ballot for you.
if you cannot correctly answer a few very basic rudimentary economic questions, no ballot for you.
If they do not know that they live in a country that is a representative democratic republic, then no ballot for them.
if you are in the nursing home and lost your mental faculties and cannot name who is president or the last name of your current governor, or what year it is, no ballot for you.
The people who can do all the above will stay on the voter rolls. The others will be removed until they can show a minimum amount of intelligence on said minimum amount of sense tests.

In The Iron Broom the author pointed out how everyone LOVED to receive Pravda free every day. How else could they afford to buy toilet paper, sandwich wrappers, paper towels, etc. They used it for everything they could and it never went to waste.

I’m kind of surprised by you DW, in your lack of awareness or empathy in being shown the conscription brutality (similar to Putin’s), and the stripping of rights from common Ukrainians, and yet treating such violations with nonchalance, indignant about Putin’s evilness while giving Zelensky a pass. IMO, tyranny and publicly terrorizing one’s own people deserves equal condemnation, no matter who the leader is.

I believe most Ukrainians want the war to end. I believe most Ukrainians don’t want to fear being on the streets because they might be picked up by conscription goons. I think most Ukrainians want a normal life, not one being bombarded by drones and missiles. BTW, much of the billions being sent to Ukraine is unaccounted for, and certainly has not been spent on the general population, with lots of rumors circulating about graft and theft by those in Zelenskyy’s inner circle and staff.

If you look on the donation page for the poll you referenced as Pravda, the news paper is located in Kyiv and describes itself in the following way:

One final comment: the Ukrainian Constitution only says the Parliament can’t have elections during wartime. It says nothing about presidential elections restricted from happening. The reason for this is they didn’t want a sitting president to be hiding from the ballot box because of having to comply with Marshall Law requirements . So, Zelenskyy could be having elections if he wanted to.

What the Constitution REALLY says:
Statutory Ban: Article 19 of the Law of Ukraine “On the Legal Regime of Martial Law” bans presidential, parliamentary, and local elections during martial law. Article 20 of the Electoral Code of Ukraine similarly orders the suspension of all electoral processes.
Article 108 of the constitution states that the incumbent president keeps exercising powers until a newly elected president takes office, preventing a power vacuum.

Going to be tight, Brew Crew will probably sweep St. Louis, so the Phils will have to hammer them the next two games while LA has to take at least two of the three against San Diego. We just swept the Giants at LA, I think we can do it again in SF to close out the regular season.

Cubs are tied with Marlins for now, though Miami just got out of a bases loaded jam in the 6th. Still, they’re playing in Chicago, I’d have to give the edge to the Cubs. Wild card is basically a three way tie with Arizona nipping at the heels for a slot, should be fun down to the wire.

DW – My wife agreed with me and the Judge. Most of my Hearings have been virtual since COVID started – not because of fear of infection but Judge’s and many attorneys were happy to work remotely. I miss the in-court Hearings and billable travel time.
