OSLO, Norway (AP) — Norwegian authorities seized a Russian vessel in the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard on Wednesday at the request of Ukraine’s Naftogaz as part of a global effort to enforce a $4.22 billion arbitration award.
Naftogaz is trying to recover the multibillion-dollar arbitration award stemming from Russia’s 2014 illegal annexation of Crimea and its seizure of Ukrainian energy assets, including gas fields and pipelines.
In 2023, an arbitration tribunal in The Hague ordered Russia to pay the $4.22 billion to the Ukrainian state-owned energy company for unlawfully seizing its assets in Crimea.”

The two month pause Trump gave Iran was an obvious mistake with the ridiculous MOU. He was played. However, the economic squeeze he’s now putting on Iran is brilliant and the right course. Strangle their economy. At least The MOU fiasco finally convinced Trump to not play their game any longer. Unfortunately, that road takes time and it will bleed into the November elections. At this point it can’t be helped. I very much like the strategy of hitting an Iranian tanker for every commercial ship they attack in the strait. That is where they are storing their oil. They are truly running out of storage capacity. They would have already reached that point had we not lifted the blockade for seven weeks. That said, he’s doing what needs to be done to facilitate extreme economic pain which will eventually pay off I believe in the collapse of the regime. That collapse is the ONLY way to solve the Iranian problem. It’s clear they can’t be trusted even if they signed an agreement. We tried that.

DUBAI, Sept 3 (Reuters) – A U.S. campaign to throttle Iran’s economy by blockading its oil exports and stopping sanctions evasion is growing increasingly difficult to withstand, three senior Iranian sources said.
Washington has in recent weeks sought to ratchet up the economic pressure on Tehran, in an effort to extract concessions in any future negotiation that six months of conflict have so far failed to secure.
Although Iran’s clerical rulers managed to bypass sanctions for decades, the latest U.S. moves have left them in a far more sensitive position, with few remaining channels to secure foreign currency or buy goods, the sources said.
In particular, the effort to stop Iran accessing international financing networks in other countries it has long used to keep its economy functioning poses a real and urgent threat, the sources said.
Any sign the economic campaign may break a months-long deadlock in the conflict will likely cheer U.S. planners, though Iran has also warned it could respond to the pressure with military escalation, raising the stakes at a key moment.

The war has erupted back into open fighting this week, with U.S. attacks along Iran’s Gulf coast prompting retaliatory Iranian strikes at U.S. bases in Arab states.

While more energy is flowing to international markets through the Strait of Hormuz despite Iranian efforts to continue disrupting the seaway, the U.S. blockade of Iranian oil exports has entirely cut off Tehran’s main source of revenue.
Adding to Iran’s problems, the economy was already deep in crisis before the conflict, with a cratering currency and spiralling inflation, while months of bombing have run up a massive bill to rebuild damaged industry and infrastructure.
Meanwhile, the country’s financial squeeze is itself biting into Tehran’s efforts to get around the sanctions regime, leaving less cash to pay the high premiums required to skirt sanctions illicitly, the sources said.
The rial has fallen to record lows over recent days and one senior source said Iran only has another two months’ supply of gasoline, which has to be imported despite domestic oil production because of limited refining capacity.
“They are under very, very severe economic pressure. They’re losing control of the Straits. It’s really a question of if they choose to negotiate and I think they’ll have to,” said Ali Ansari, modern history professor at St Andrews University in Scotland.
The war is also entering a new phase, with each side trying to influence each other’s politics.
Iran hopes the threat of inflation will deter the U.S. administration before midterm elections in November, while Washington aims to push Iranians to revolt, a senior Iranian official said.
BLOCKADE AND SECONDARY SANCTIONS SQUEEZING TEHRAN
The latest U.S. measures expanded secondary sanctions that target countries doing business with Iran in a bid to stop it clearing dollar transactions needed for both oil sales and to finance crucial imports of goods and raw materials.
That effort is making Iran’s existing sanctions evasion networks – front companies, unregistered tankers and smuggling – too expensive to use, the three senior sources said.
Iranian crude loadings have fallen this month to about 260,000 barrels a day, from about 1.7 million a year earlier, according to data from commodity analytics firm Kpler, with only a trickle still moving off terminals for distribution by truck, train or smaller boats over the Caspian Sea.
Tehran says it still has tens of millions of barrels stored in tankers outside the blockade zone that it can sell, but the new sanctions mean intermediaries are stepping back or demanding more money, one of the officials said.
Total trade has fallen between 25% and 35%, with imports hit harder than exports, President Masoud Pezeshkian has said, one of several top officials warning in recent weeks about Iran’s rapidly deteriorating situation.
U.S. pressure and Iran’s own attacks have meanwhile disrupted one of the main conduits for Iranian trade – the United Arab Emirates, which said on August 19 that all commercial exchange and financial dealings with Tehran were halted until further notice.
“If those channels stay closed, a supplier wants cash, a deal is routed through another country and a shipment arrives later and dearer,” said an Iranian trader in Tehran who deals in imported goods.
The currency has collapsed in value from around 1 million rials to the dollar a year ago to over 2.2 million rials now.
The internal impact is very painful. Official figures put 12-month average inflation at 69.9% with food, beverages and tobacco prices rising at nearly twice that rate.
Official unemployment rose to 9.1% in the spring, while the number of those in work fell by about 450,000 from a year earlier amid a wider fall in labour force participation.
Even for those still in work, the average monthly salary of around $125 a month comes nowhere near meeting basic household spending requirements that come to around $450 a month according to official data.
“We are getting poorer every day,” said Mahnaz, a 34-year-old private-sector employee in Tehran who asked that her family name not be used.

Ukraine flipped the focus back onto the invader after four and a half years of war on its territory.
The Ukrainians are terrorizing Russia with drones and helping to paralyze its economy through sabotage and targeted bombings. Millions of Russians are facing both the threat of death and long lines for gas.
Putin is now on the back foot at home, where he is becoming increasingly insular and paranoid, as well as abroad, where the death toll has soared past half a million.
Ukraine’s onslaught of drone attacks has become a tsunami. Analysis conducted by the Associated Press using Russian figures shows that the military was forced to intercept 43,000 drones over annexed Crimea in the last three months alone. In all of last year, that number was just 7,700.
Ukraine’s drones have targeted an array of critical infrastructure nodes; attacks on Russia’s oil refineries have been particularly damaging. Oil and gas are the spine of the Russian economy, and refineries turn its vast fossil fuel reserves into exports sold worldwide.
Ukraine sees Russia’s oil industry at the heart of the war: gas is either sold abroad to finance the war, or it ends up directly in the Kremlin’s tanks.
The crisis has forced Russia—a titan of the global oil trade—to seek help from abroad. Kazakh Energy Minister Yerlan Akkenzhenov said last week that Kazakhstan had begun importing Russian crude oil, which it would then refine before returning 70 percent to Russia, Radio Free Europe reports.
Meanwhile, rumors have spread that after the elections, the government plans another mass mobilization.
The move to drag hundreds of thousands of additional fighting-age men into the Ukrainian meat grinder would be hugely unpopular, and hard to do. The Conversation estimates that around 700,000 potential recruits have already fled the country.
Western officials now estimate that Russia is losing around 6,000 troops per week. Whether Moscow can keep up with that demand remains to be seen.
For Russians, quality of life may be about to get worse after Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky issued a chilling warning: close Russia’s airspace to commercial planes.
“Although the Russian authorities are not properly informing people about this, Russian airspace will effectively be closing—the war started by Russia is closing its skies,” he said. “For now, the skies over Russia are for drones—not for civilian aviation.”

This is similar to when the Persian king Xerxes decided to start a senseless war with Greece, and the invasion was initially successful, Athens was destroyed along with the old Parthenon, but then the invasion stalled out and the Persians had to withdraw.
It left the Greeks very embittered, and years later they exacted revenge when Alexander the Great wiped out the entire Persian empire in just three years. No word on whether or not Alex had a Yacht.

The defense attorney for Lindsay Clancy just told the court that just one juror is keeping from Clancy and a NGRI (not guilty by reason of insanity) verdict.
And not only that, but asked that this one juror be removed and replaced because they can’t follow the Commonwealth of Massachusetts legal definition of what it means be beyond a reasonable doubt.
And of course, the judge sent the jurors back in for deliberations.

I wanted to make one more comment about yesterday’s bombshell Harvard-Harris generic ballot poll. This is a real pollster with a real track record. It’s not some fly by night org being run by one person out of a basement. By my count there are only 11 pollsters who have done regular generic ballot polling in at least three out of the last four cycles. Harvard-Harris is one of those eleven. In 2024 they skewed 4.7 points to the Dems. In 2022, they were 3.2 skewed in favor of the GOP, while in 2018 they were 0.6 skewed to the Dems…essentially spot on. Compared to the other 10 pollsters who regularly do this, they ranked sixth for accuracy with a slight lean to the Democrats.

That lawyer should be asked how he knows that by the Judge. Jury deliberations are supposed to be secret. If that lawyer contacted court staff or a member of the jury, the lawyer should be suspended or disbarred. I don’t know why this jury is not sequestered.

had the same thought bitter, but of course couldn’t articulate how to say it like you did. But I recall once when I was a juror, the prosecutor said something about the defendant’s past that was not related to the case and the judge immediately stopped him, called him up to the bench and grilled him for a couple of minutes, very angry, and then sent him back and told us that what we heard could not be used in our deliberations. So yeah, I doubt this attorney has access to info in the jury room and if he did, would be stupid to tell the judge.

JG – IF the jury informed the Judge of the status of deliberations, that would be different. I don’t know Massachusetts law but I suspect you can’t ask a judge to remove a specific juror to get the result you want. The prosecutor can probably ask for a mistrial based on that request.
