“Meteorologists said Hurricane Melissa intensified at a speed rarely seen, its rapid strengthening fuelled by abnormally warm Caribbean waters – part of a broader trend linked to climate change.”–BBC

And yet climate change was apparently not responsible for this:

“During a hurricane in 1749, the Chesapeake Bay rose 15 feet (4.6 m) above normal, and a sand spit was washed up at Sewell’s Point. With the help of the Great Coastal Hurricane of 1806, Willoughby Spit was formed.”

And now there are three story beach houses out there where it used to be Chesapeake Bay/James River.

    SPY crossed 6900 recently.

If we can get to 7200 by the end of the year, that will mean three consecutive years of 20% positive returns. What a ride. But also a cautionary tale. The last time we had three consecutive 20% positive years, it was in the 90s which then was followed by the most epic bubble burst of my lifetime (the dot com bust).

”Imagine if you threw a party and no one came. Pretty humiliating, right?

Well, imagine if you represented the party of big government, lost the presidency and both houses of Congress, then demanded a federal shutdown to impose your welfare-state agenda on the nation — and no one seemed to care much.

In that scenario, you’ve become your own worst enemy: You’ve inadvertently made your adversaries’ case that there really isn’t a meaningful voter constituency for a big-government leviathan.”

    VA-01 (was Trump +4.9 in 2024) +12,000 votes over 2021
    VA-05 (was Trump +12.3 in 2024) +3,100 votes over 2021
    VA-09 (was Trump +44.1 in 2024) +9,000 votes over 2021

Meanwhile, these districts are way behind the final early vote totals from 2021:

    VA-03 (was Harris +34.7 in 2024) -21,000 votes behind 2021
    VA-07 (was Harris +2.9 in 2024) -40,000 votes behind 2021

More votes in a pro-Trump district wouldn’t be good if more Dems are voting there, and conversely less votes in a Dem district wouldn’t be good if the shortfall means less Rs voting.

Intuitively these numbers look good IF you assume the Rs are gaining votes in R districts and Ds are losing votes in D districts.

But there is an IF there.

However, the announced ending of quantitative tightening caused an immediate upward movement in long rates (10s. 20s, and 30s). This suggests that the bloated balance sheet and continued Fed buying of government debt is not popular among bond buyers. Did the Fed screw up?

But if you add up all the one-time “neighbors” who appeared in individual episodes but never again, people who live just over the hill on the way to Walnut Grove, the Ingalls had to have lived in a decent sized city for all those neighbors.

  62. Looking at some of these Trump job approval numbers pushed by left-leaning pollsters who badly missed 2024 got me thinking. Lets say they are right and only 40% approve of the job Trump is doing.

Nearly 50% of the nation VOTED for Trump just one year ago.

What has he done and is doing that so many suddenly don’t approve of?

    Ending the war in Gaza?

Ending the war on the Cambodian border?

    Ending illegal immigration?

    Lowering gas prices?

Working trade deals that so far are working?

I could go on and on, and Trump is even behaving himself more or less. Much more so than the first term. And the military is being fixed. Woke and DEI is on the run…all the things the 50% voted to get, and suddenly 1/5th of them don’t like it?

Or perhaps these pollsters are out to lunch, and RMG research is right on Trump’s approval.

But this also has me wondering if polls are going to be missing the mark this fall because of a possible “Bradley Effect.”

Its obvious the left has a violence problem given all their rhetoric resulting in multiple attempts on Trump’s life, the assassination of Charlie Kirk, and in Virginia the chilling reality that ALL Dems in Virginia don’t believe its disqualifying for an Atty General candidate to be so unhinged he wants to put two bullets into the head of a Republican.

In this toxic environment who is going to answer the poll and tell a stranger, a pollster, yes, I am a Republican, and yes I want Democrats to lose, knowing that if they win, and find out I am Republican, that they will want two bullets in my head too.

    193 square mile area.

Population of under 7,000. (6,850 or something like that)

It is a poor, economically deprived area. Yes, they do have a casino there.

    ************************************

71 years ago, a gas/oil pipeline was built which runs through the reservation–16 miles from W to E. The gas/oil comes from Canada and is piped East to the U.S. There is no gas/oil located beneath the Bad River Reservation.

The Reservation is paid money annually by the gas company due to 16 miles of their pipeline goes thru the reservation.

The Indians want this pipeline shut down, and the pipes dug up and removed. The Canadian NatGas company wanted to build a new pipeline on same trajectory through the reservation to replace the existing buried NatGas line. Indians refused to give permission.

Gas company then decides–at substantial greater cost, to build their new line by making a U around the 16 mile wide reservation.

State of WI and U.S. Army Corp of Engineers have given approval of the new pipeline. Indians have filed suit to stop that as well.

“the Bad River Reservation has received court-ordered payments from Enbridge for the operation of its Line 5 pipeline on tribal lands, though the tribe has refused other settlement offers and prioritized the pipeline’s removal.

    ************************

Here is a breakdown of the compensation and legal battle:

    • Easements expired, leading to trespass: Enbridge’s easements for Line 5 on a dozen parcels of tribal land expired in 2013. The Bad River Band refused to renew them due to safety concerns about potential spills into their watershed. A federal judge later ruled that Enbridge was willfully trespassing by continuing to operate the pipeline on the reservation.
    • Court-ordered payments: In 2023, a federal judge ordered Enbridge to pay the tribe $5.15 million for trespassing [AND THIS EQUATES TO EACH INDIAN GETTING $750+] and [AND] to continue quarterly payments as long as the pipeline remained on their land. The judge also ordered the pipeline to be removed from the reservation by June 2026.
    • Rejection of settlement offers: The Bad River Band has repeatedly refused large settlement offers from Enbridge in favor of having the pipeline removed completely. In 2019, the tribe rejected a $24 million offer, and in 2024, it refused a new offer of $80 million. [THIS $80MM would equate to EVERY INDIAN ON THE RESERVATION getting about $11,500–($46,000 for a family of 4 on the reservation.)]
    • Focus on environmental and cultural protection: For the Bad River Band, the issue is not about money but about protecting their homeland, treaty rights, and way of life. The tribe is concerned about the risk of a rupture, which would threaten their waterways, wild rice, and other natural resources. Tribal leadership has stated, “Our homeland, our treaty rights, and our way of life are not for sale”.”

    ************************************

    Payments and legal battles

2013 Expired easements: The tribe refused to renew easements for the pipeline in 2013, as the easements had expired on several parcels of land within the reservation.

2019 Lawsuit settlement offer: In a 2019 settlement offer that was part of the ongoing legal battle, Enbridge proposed paying the tribe $12 million to settle claims related to the expired easements and $2 million annually until the pipeline is no longer in use on the reservation. {This $2 MM per year would be about $1,000/family of four if actually paid out that way. ]

2023 Court-ordered payments: A federal judge ruled in June 2023 that Enbridge must pay the Bad River Band $5.15 million in damages, which includes profits earned since the original pipeline easement expired. The company was also ordered to make ongoing quarterly payments to the tribe for as long as the pipeline is on its land.

    • Ongoing dispute: Despite the court order, Enbridge has appealed the decision, and the tribe continues to wait for the pipeline to be removed from their land. The tribe is also seeking a larger share of Enbridge’s profits.

Bad River Indians have sued to stop the proposed building of the U shaped pipeline AROUND their reservation because of “fears” the pipeline “may” impact the higher in elevation watershed that sits above the Bad River reservation.

    ********************************************

    So the Indians

–do not want the existing pipeline (that provides them annual payments from the gas company) running through their reservation

–do not want the new pipeline (for which they would receive annual payments from the gas company) to run through their reservations

–do not wanted the new pipeline (for which they get NO annual payment from the gas company) to go AROUND the reservation.
