The persistent attempts by some to justify this tragedy with snide memes and self-righteous graphics expose a deep moral failing in our town, one that thrives on division and lacks the basic decency to mourn a life lost.
In Winchester, two local figures—a bookstore co-owner and a restaurant manager—ignited firestorms with their callous online remarks about Kirk’s death.
The bookstore’s Google listing vanished under a wave of criticism, while the restaurant swiftly terminated its manager, issuing a public apology for the pain caused.
These incidents aren’t just about individual missteps; they reflect a broader sickness in our community, where people feel emboldened to mock a man’s execution in front of his children and a horrified audience.
In a town known for its historic charm and tight-knit spirit, these actions sting all the more, showing how far we’ve strayed from the values we claim to hold dear.
Jobs were lost, businesses suffered, and yet the rationalizations continue, as if a clever hashtag or a laughing emoji could ever justify such cruelty.
The Winchester Star’s decision to close its comment section underscores the depth of our community’s fracture. What should have been a space for reflection became a battleground of insults, justifications, and glee over a man’s death, forcing moderators to pull the plug.
Even now, locals dodge the blackout, spilling their venom onto platforms like X and Facebook, determined to keep the fight alive.
This isn’t about processing a tragedy—it’s about winning a point, turning a family’s loss into a chance to dunk on the other side.
In Winchester, where we gather for apple harvests and community festivals, this obsession with scoring moral victories over a corpse is nothing short of shameful.
Worst of all are those who think they can meme their way to righteousness, posting snarky graphics or smug commentary to argue that Kirk’s death was somehow deserved. Are you serious?
You’re out here playing ethical gatekeeper, trying to spin a public execution—witnessed by thousands in person and millions online, including young people—into some kind of justice?
Step back. Keep quiet for once. We’re tired of hearing the same tired takes, endlessly churned out as if they’re profound. Your graphics and hashtags don’t make you look enlightened—they make you look heartless, and they’re not fooling anyone.
The inability to pause, to feel the weight of a father’s death in front of his family, points to something broken in Winchester.

Cash Cow and I are amazed when we watch the zillions of Facebook videos of police interacting with various members of the public for traffic stops, etc. that go south real fast.
Someone in the future will no doubt do their doctoral research regarding the analyzing of these head shaking episodes. I watch too many hours of them, but they are mesmerizing.

I divide them into several categories:
–those under 25 year old who committed a moving violation and then quickly become uncooperative, hostile, refuse to provide ID etc., immediately want to call Mom or Dad then get into a whole world of trouble because they are irrational and stupid.
–younger (under 40) members of the Black community who are quickly uncooperative, claim they are innocent even then caught dead to rights with $2000 of shoplifted goods in their possession. These people immediately say they know their rights, (which they don’t), say you cannot touch me, this is racism, keep your hands off me bro, then “stop, stop, I did not do anything”, followed with kicking and biting and then getting tazed, and “I fought back because I am pregnant, I have the go to the bathroom, I am afraid of you, I will sue you, please just let me go, no I am not under arrest, no I am not going to jail, etc.
–mentally deranged to some degree folks like the white “sovereign citizen” nutcases, the mentally challenged or drunk usually while women at airports or acting bizarre in public and are immediately uncooperative.
–people from 18-50 who have been drinking too much and are irrational and are mouthy and combative and then get thrown to the ground cuffed and stuffed.

I am a little bummed out.
The missus informed me that next Thursday is when we are going to Lancaster to see a sight and sound show there with friends.
THAT is one of my two Thursdays a month to play bridge. She knows that.
Now I have to find a sub to take my place next Thursday.
She: “I asked you if it would be OK to accept invitation to go see sight and sound and you said yes.”
ME: “you never told me it was on a Thursday when I play bridge.”
That is the kind of treatment I get, even after all the chores I do for her….

What you should have said was:
Slavery was pure evil and facts that show free Blacks owned slaves fly in the face of what I believe to be true so I will not believe them. Facts like nearly half of 500,000 free Blacks in the south in 1860 owned slaves themselves is not important to me. I will consider any and all facts that are contrary to my beliefs as simply feckless and inaccurate “revisionism.” Blacks owning other blacks was also evil and not just justified.
I think we all agree here that slavery is wrong.

I was wrong about the numbers. Got it confused with something else. Half of Blacks did not own slaves. I don’t have the article, but I think it was talking about the number of free blacks in the country being about 500,000 in 1830 and that half of those free blacks lived in the south when the pop of country was about 27 million and pop of south was about 8 million

For some really interesting stats in furtherance of that thought, check out the numbers on the slaves sold by the African tribes to the European slave traders. Historians estimate that approximately 90% of the Africans captured and sold as slaves to the New World during the Atlantic slave trade were enslaved by fellow Africans who then sold them to European traders. A horrible stat often ignored in woke educational circles.

In the video link I provided up thread, I was amazed that out of 12 million slaves that were sent to the New World only about 500,000 came to the U.S. and their survival rate in the U.S> was significantly higher than going to tropical areas of Central and South American due to diseases, etc. there.

I read all of Walt’s “facts” on slavery, all very interesting but I couldn’t find one instance of any “myths” or “falsehoods” being dispelled.
Blacks owned slaves? Zzzzzz… does that make whites who owned them somehow look better?
More slaves survived in the US than other locations. Zzzzz…..that justifies what exactly?
A lot of revisionist stuff has been published to try to cast slavery in a more favorable light. I think it’s an epic fail.
