Wait…how could THIS be an unsolved mystery? Some mathematician in Egypt solved this back in the B.C. years. Well, back then there was no internet and social media. There wasn’t any through most of the 20th century A.D. either. This meant that things considered scientific fact, that any person could easily verify were rock solid, and only countered by the toothless hicks who counter facts just to get on TV.
But now armed with social media, believers in the FLAT EARTH have made a comeback. Some of the statistics are downright scary. I recently was told that a person I had met years ago, a highly educated person, actually has come to believe the earth is flat, and that it is a huge conspiracy. An open question. An UNSOLVED MYSTERY.

Eratosthenes reasonably calcuated the earth’s “circumference” using sticks in the ground to measure the angle of the shadows caused by the sun’s rays in two different locations in Egypt. In so doing, he proved that the planet is spherical in shape, and given how crude his implements were, it is amazing that he came very close to the actual circumference. This was done around 240 BC, and followed on the postulations of other figures like Pythagoras before him, so it’s not like everybody thought the world was flat back then.
The next conspiracy will ask “are we really heliocentric?”

When I was about 11 yea old the family was on a 4 hour trip to visit relatives in York PA. My brother (3 years older than me–now has been deceased for about 5 years) and I were discussing the reality that there was some society of people who then believed the earth to be flat. Maybe we heard it on the radio news on the car radio. Whatever. Anyway, So my brother and I for a lark and within a few hours had come up with a “theory” to “prove” the earth was flat. We even wrote the theory down on paper and had drawn maps. It was an enjoyable time killing hoot. I still have that paper and maps–somewhere. We even had this “theory” that satellite images showing the earth was round were optical illusions.
Since I am no fool, I do not actually believe the world is flat. Never did believe such nonsense. Yet I am amazed at how many FAcebook posts from the flat earth society show up on my feet.
