I think Zelensky is a great Ukrainian Patriot who has valiantly defended his country against all odds and kept it from being annexed by Russia. I have no problem with him looking out for Ukraine first and standing up to anyone trying to bully him into unacceptable terms.

I think Putin is a blood thirsty dictator and despot who is trying to recreate the USSR, the demise of which he calls “one of the great tragedies in History”. I think he is guilty of horrendous war crimes in Ukraine.

  60. Chicon, no CPI but other inflation measures reported today showed slight inflationary upticks . For example the BEA reported that the price index for gross domestic purchases increased 3.4 percent in the first quarter, compared with an increase of 2.2 percent in the fourth quarter. The personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index increased 3.6 percent, compared with an increase of 2.4 percent. Excluding food and energy prices, the PCE price index increased 3.5 percent, compared with an increase of 2.6 percent. Putting these in context, GDP Price index of 3.7% came in hotter than the 3.1% expected, while the core PCE of 3.5% was also hotter than the 3.1%.

John Groggin , you are correct. BEA confirmed as much, writing that “the decrease in real GDP in the first quarter primarily reflected an increase in imports, which are a subtraction in the calculation of GDP, and a decrease in government spending. These movements were partly offset by increases in investment, consumer spending, and exports.” Nevertheless, the GDP print exceeded analyst expectations. This positions the Trump admin for a surprise bounce in Q2 and/or Q3 when all the outlier prints from Q1 are reversed.

Milan / Barcelona game today was fantastic. Definitely worthy of a 3 guiness pour.

  108. Great article (from the 2024 election) by the late David Horowitz in Powerline today pointing out how Democrats know how to fight while many Republicans do not –

”As many of us have pointed out too many times to no avail, Democrats reflexively call conservatives racists, white supremacists, and Hitlerites, while Republicans respond by calling them “liberals.” What is liberal about attacking, undermining and seeking to abolish the First Amendment? Or interfering with presidential elections by mobilizing a corrupt judiciary to take the leading Republican out of the race? Or calling for government censorship of social media platforms, or privileging certain races over others?

In the current presidential campaign, Democrats in the media seek to distract voters from the conditions Democrats have inflicted on them by defaming Trump as “an existential threat to democracy.” Republicans respond by referring to the fact that Democrats have “weaponized” the Justice Department. Even if a voter understands that “weaponize” does not mean providing the FBI and federal police agencies with weapons, it sorely lacks the emotional charge of Hitlerism – although that is exactly what it means. If justice is not blind but becomes a partisan force to criminalize political opponents like Trump then the logical goal of weaponizing justice is a one-party dictatorship and a totalitarian state. Or, as Hillary has put it, without government censorship of the media “we will lose total control.”

Democrats criminalize arguments and facts they can’t answer by calling them “disinformation.” In a campaign worthy of the KGB, the Democrat Secretary of State suborned 51 top intelligence officials including the former head of the CIA to sign a letter calling Hunter Biden’s treasonous lap top “Russian disinformation” right before the 2020 election. This behavior is not just about winning elections, which it was and would be bad enough. It’s about betraying your country and fellow countrymen.

Republicans are rightly alarmed that the Democrats have destroyed America’s borders, let in an estimated 20 million unvetted individuals including hundreds of thousands of convicted criminals, virtually all from countries and continents ruled by corrupt dictators and fanatic terrorists. They are shocked by the Democrats’ determination to give these illegal aliens the right to vote along with more goods and privileges than the indigenous population.

But they are tongue-tied when it comes to calling these policies what they are: criminal and treasonous attacks on our country and its Constitution. Joe Biden had no legal authority to change America’s immigration policies by executive order. Immigration policy is the purview of the legislative branch of government not the destructive schemes of one demented executive. Destroying the border is the greatest crime committed against America in its 237-year history. It is not a run-of-the mill policy difference.”

Maybe this is what Zelensky was holding out for.

    Encouraging.

“This agreement signals clearly to Russia that the Trump Administration is committed to a peace process centered on a free, sovereign, and prosperous Ukraine over the long term,” Bessent added. “And to be clear, no state or person who financed or supplied the Russian war machine will be allowed to benefit from the reconstruction of Ukraine.”

Of course, Trump’s idea of free and sovereign might not include all of Ukraine like I think it should, but still I like the “commitment to a free and sovereign Ukraine”.

There are some positives I can see. Zelensky had rejected the idea that Ukraine needed to pay back aid that was given without strings attached and would have been crazy to agree to that.

“Trump has previously demanded that Ukraine pay back the $350bn (£264bn) of aid that he claims has been provided by the US during the war – a condition that Zelensky rejected.

But Washington appears to have made a concession. Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said the agreement did not dictate that his country pay back any supposed “debt”.

Also the text seems a lot harsher towards Russia than previously voiced by Trump, including referring to Russia’s “full scale invasion” and shutting Russia out of any “reconstruction benefits”.

    We will see.

Another positive, and I think this is important.

“There were some concerns in Kyiv that the resources deal could hinder Ukraine’s ability to join the EU, if it gave preferential treatment to US investors, as Kyiv and Brussels already have a strategic partnership on raw materials.

But the deal’s text says that the US acknowledges Ukraine’s intention to join the EU and the need for this agreement not to conflict with that.

It also says that if Ukraine needs to revisit the terms of the deal because of “additional obligations” as part of joining the EU, then the US agrees to negotiate in good faith.

Additionally, Kyiv says the US will support additional transfers of investment and technology in Ukraine, including from the EU and elsewhere.”

Are you really that much of a moron?

Any rift between the US and Ukraine is positive for Russia.

The US seems to be making a commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty as part of the deal, so if the US walks away from it that would certainly benefit Russia.

Btw, YOU said several times that a minerals deal in itself WAS a commitment, but I guess your Kremlin talking points don’t include that anymore. d

Every article I have read points out this is a new concession.

But old or new, I agree it is a good concession, the aid was given without a payback clause and so it would not be right to bully Ukraine into accepting that clause.

I have argued here against the idea that close economic ties was a sufficient guarantee. But while not specifically offering a guarantee, the text does express a commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty.

There seems to be a little for everybody in this deal, not a bad thing.

The petition for protection form filed in Maryland by Jennifer Vasquez Sura has boxes checked for “acts of abuse,” including kicking, slapping, shoving, mental injury of a child and detaining against will.

The form goes on to describe an incident in November 2019 when he grabbed her “by the hair in the car.” In December 2019, he allegedly grabbed her hair in the car and “dragged” her “out of car leaving [her] in the street.” She wrote that he also “broke” her son’s tablet, “broke doors” in the house, pushed her against a wall, broke a phone and a television and damaged the walls that spring.

    and”

In a court petition, Vasquez describes multiple incidents over the course of several days in May 2021. In one case, Vasquez wrote that Abrego Garcia got angry with her at a gas station, insulted her and drove very fast. Days later, Vasquez alleges Abrego Garcia yelled at her to turn off her laptop, and when she said she wasn’t tired, she said he “got angry” and threw her laptop on the floor. She alleged she pushed him off of her, and “he then punched” and “[scratched] me on my left eye, leaving me bleeding.”

Later that day, Abrego Garcia allegedly tore off Vasquez’s shorts and shirt and “grabbed me by the arm” when she ran away, leaving a mark on her left arm. The following morning, after he allegedly didn’t give her a set of car keys, she called an Uber for her and the kids because she was “scared of him” and “afraid to be close to him.”

    Zzzzz….

    Meaningless without context.

Inflation is caused by higher demand than supply.

We don’t know exactly what the effects of the tariffs are going to be on prices because the tariffs have not kicked in yet. There were a lot of imports because everyone wanted to stock up, so there are a lot of non-tariff affected goods in the supply chain that will further delay the impact.

Also, we don’t know what the changes in demand will be. Lower economic activity as a result of decreased international commerce would reduce demand too.

Meanwhile the US Chamber of Commerce is asking for ” carve-outs” on tariffs, some made be granted.

In any case, there is no good argument for interest rate cuts at the moment.

For the record, I’m skeptical that Putin is really ready.”

You are late to the party.

Putin didn’t invade Ukraine and sacrifice hundreds of thousands of Russians and become an international pariah and war criminal to get the parts of Ukraine he already controlled or to “keep Ukraine from joining NATO”.

He invaded because he wanted to make Ukraine a vassal state like he did with Belarus, so he could exploit Ukraine’s resources, not only agricultural and mineral, but also to have another 40 million people working for Russia. Conquering Ukraine would be a significant step in his stated ambition of a Greater Russia and would allow him continue his expansionist plans, most likely targeting Moldova and some of the “stans” next, while continuing to threaten the Baltic States and Finland.

So of course he is not “ready”. A peace deal, even one that gives him 20% of Ukraine, about 10% more than he already had, is not going to sell well in Russia and does not fulfill his ambitions.

So he will try to insist on a formula that allows him to keep undermining Ukraine politically, economically and militarily (demilitarizing Ukraine, changing its constitution, barring it from the EU, etc.).
