I’m not sure this will solve anything, since most investments held by politicians are in blind trust type arrangements where they purport to make no decisions, only the delegated FA. However, because of the name alone, I’m all for this –
Canada is a separate country that is free to elect the leader of their choosing. The US is currently focused (thankfully) on America, and America wants Canada to change their trade policies and spend at least 2% of GDP on defense.
The rest of the governance of Canada is up to Canadians.

and America wants Canada to change their trade policies and spend at least 2% of GDP on defense.”
Zzzzz…
And of course the odds of that happening were much better with the conservatives. Pierre Polievre was the epitome of the anti-woke candidate who wanted to cut government in Canada and would have been a great partner for Trump.
Instead, Trump handed the Liberals a big win and lost the opportunity to get Canada much more aligned with the US.
The best approach would have let Polievre win and THEN negotiated. Instead all Trump did with his stupid trade war was turn the population towards the most protectionist and anti-American party.
NYT’s David Brooks doesn’t “know the specific details” of the Judge Dugan case — but says she was “heroic.” “If the federal enforcement agencies come to your courtroom and you help a guy escape, that is two things…” “One, it strikes me as maybe something illegal, but it also strikes me as something heroic.”
Tina is so deep in the Cult that she is going to pretend that even though the Canadian Liberals won because of Trump’s trade war, that Trump had nothing to do with it. She will ignore that the Conservatives were expected to win big until Trump’s trade war.
This sheot should have been released already. She looks incompetent.

Very good. EVERY company in America should do this. Show them exactly how and what Trump’s stupid tariffs and trade wars are costing the American consumer.
Brilliant move. No wonder Karoline is whining about it.
“White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt slammed Amazon founder Jeff Bezos for engaging in a “hostile and political act” following news that the company would include tariff pricing in the costs of products sold on the global e-commerce site.
According to Punchbowl News, Amazon plans to display the portion of a product’s price it claims to be attributable to President Trump’s tariffs directly next to the total listed price.
The move is an attempt to blame potential cost increases directly on the administration’s efforts to negotiate better trade deals through tariffs.
“Amazon doesn’t want to shoulder the blame for the cost of President Donald Trump’s trade war,” the outlet reported Tuesday. “The shopping site will display how much of an item’s cost is derived from tariffs – right next to the product’s total listed price.”
“In an interview with Fox News on Friday, Luna said that she had just been told that NBC has a “never been seen before” video of the shooting that she would be requesting access to. The video, according to Luna, “allegedly” shows presumed gunman Lee Harvey Oswald near Kennedy’s vehicle when the assassination happened.”
Amazon has just issued a statement denying PunchBowl’s reporting and explaining that showing tariffs costs on the main Amazon site was “never a consideration”:
“The team that runs our ultra low cost Amazon Haul store has considered listing import charges on certain products.
This was never a consideration for the main Amazon site and nothing has been implemented on any Amazon properties.”
Amazon’s share price is rebounding on the statement
Bezos is once again the second most hated billionaire by the left
Shocking, I know. Punchbowl news gets it wrong. Funny how some at HHR criticize posts by others from what they perceive as less credible sources but have no problem with the long and storied track record of the esteemed PunchBowl news, LOL!

Hilarious.
The Cultists will now claim that the Marxists winning is a GOOD THING.
Just more evidence these people are not conservatives, but we knew that.
IMO Trump’s reciprocal tariff policies are fair and needed, to rebalance the deficits we experience in our trading practices with countries who gain surpluses from these unequal practices. The fact Canada was incensed by tariffs is just a byproduct of leveling the trading field with them. It became their call if their anger created a shift in their vote for the liberal candidate vs the conservative one. As of this morning, though, Carney has not been able to win the 172 seats needed for his party to be in control of total governing. If this lack of seats holds then he will have to work with other parties to formulate policies to run the country. Such an outcome would hopefully provide a buffer for enacting a Trudeau type leftist government.
Chuck Todd claims it was not a “media failure” for the MSM to ignore Biden’s decline.
It is like saying the Titanic did not sink because it hit an iceberg. The fault was with the Captain who didn’t plug the hole fast enough.
This is not a media failure. This was a failure of the Democratic Party. And the virtue signaling that some people have done to try to say that the media missed this story. They didn’t miss this story. I just refuse to accept this stupid premise! Because it’s a right-wing manufactured right-wing premise in order to stain the media.
The media’s got plenty of things to attack them for. And there are MSNBC and CNN and pundits that absolutely carried water for Joe Biden. But they’re not journalists. They’re former strategists that carried water for Joe Biden!
The journalist David Ignatius wrote a very high-profile column in October of ’23 saying, “Is he really running again, this doesn’t seem like a good idea.”
People like me were promoting Dean Phillips’ campaign because he was running a campaign that made a lot of sense.
[…] This is an attempt by some to virtue signal. And it’s the horrible sort of pitting different news organizations against each other, when ultimately, the people at fault are: Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, Jill Biden, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, every elected member of Congress!”

You are an idiot and a moron.
The “other parties” are the Bloc Quebecois, the NDP, and the Greens all outright socialist parties even farther to the left than the Liberals.
In other words, the Liberals will have to go even FARTHER LEFT to govern.
Janzam is so stupid that not only does she think it great the conservatives lost but it it is even better the LIberals will have to make concessions to even farther left parties to govern.
A US District judge has ruled that doctors have one week to reverse Joe Biden’s mental and physical decline so he can begin running for a second term in the 2028 election. I hope that more businesses open factories and facilities in America. I also know that the cost of these products will go up because of paying more to American workers. So Americans will earn more but also pay more.

Unfortunately none of the other mentioned linked sites never had that level of outstanding reporting, LOL!

Bitter & Jason are the self-endorsed sages of HHR. Everything they say is genius. Everyone they excoriate deserve it. They live in a two-man bubble in total bliss, floating around as mental/moral icons of the universe. A heady but delusional grasp of the events going on around them.
Bitter said….”I hope that more businesses open factories and facilities in America. I also know that the cost of these products will go up because of paying more to American workers.”
Me, too. I especially hope this is true for steel, natural resources, drugs, shipbuilding and other more essential capabilities.
There’s hope that robotics will allow for fewer hires than in previous generations.
The US Inflation rate is 2.39% (March 31) compared to 2.82% last month and 3.48% last year. The 2.39% is the lowest recorded number since February 28, 2021.
Further, 228,000 jobs were created last month.
Hourly wage for private non-payroll increased 0.3% last month.
But, of course, according to the CNN poll a majority of people polled are blaming Trump for the slumping economy
What group of Americans have seen inflation increase since Trump took office?”
Sure.
The question is a red herring because Chicon knows Trump has paused most tariffs for 90 days so he knows they haven’t had time yet to impact prices and in any case effect is delayed because the supply pipeline from a lot of countries we import from, are months long.
But since he is intellectually dishonest and a lying fraud he poses it as “since Trump took office”.
Middle income should expect to pay about $2600 more a year according to most estimates. Tariffs will cause higher consumer prices across most retail categories. Tech products will become more expensive as well as most appliances and cars. Food prices will be impacted from groceries stores to restaurants, especially produce and fruits, but just about everything. Even hops used in beer is imported, American breweries import most of hops from England, Europe and Oceania. And of course anything with aluminum, which many foods are packaged in.
Lower income Americans would be harder hit as the tariff increases impact the products they buy the most.
Estimates show the top 1% will not be affected by tariffs, because proposed tax cuts would offset their losses.
Zzzzzzzzz Simple question for Jan. The Conservatives were expected to win big before Trump’s trade war with Canada. The Liberals won after Trump’s trade war. Did Trump have an impact on the election? Yes or no?
I got caught with an astoundingly stupid and ignorant comment about the Canadian election so I will attack Bitter and Jason.
You’re a riot, Jason, in posting about “attacking” people when that’s what you boost about doing 24/7. Being a bully, through and through, I guess dims one’s self awareness and turns them into a comedian.
Ok time for jason’s all knowing, influential, and of course astonishingly accurate grades for Trump’s first 100 days.
Cabinet B A lot A picks, especially Bondi, Burgum, Rubio, Duffy, Noem, Zeldin, Ratcliff. But a couple Fs too, far left big government Dems RFK Jr and Tulsi should not be in the cabinet.
Immigration B+ (would get an A for shutting down the border, but has wasted political capital on unforced errors and the birthright citizenship thing is a stupid distraction)
DOGE A Not because all the goals have been accomplished, but just the fact Trump got someone as qualified as Musk to run the program and just the fact Trump IS trying to reduce the size of government (when he did absolutely nothing to do so in his first term) deserves major kudos.
Energy A drill baby drill will bring dividends to the US, will offset some of the costs of the stupid trade wars for consumers, and will enrich the US through exports.
Economy C– Trump was elected to bring prices down, he has spent little time on that. He has tanked the stock market with his stupid trade wars and cost millions of people big hits on their life’s savings. His economic isolationism, his hatred of free trade and free markets, and his hostility to international commerce in general is exactly the opposite of what America should be promoting.
Foreign policy C I would give him an F on Ukraine and NATO, but he has remained loyal to Israel and I approve of his aggressive stance against Iran and terrorism in general.
I might have grades on other matters eventually, stay tuned.
The Liberals won after Trump’s trade war. Did Trump have an impact on the election?
The Canadians didn’t like being called on the carpet by Trump for the great trading disparities between our countries. The conservative candidate caved in his support of Trump showing a weakness in his candidacy. So, he lost not only the PM election but his own seat. Where Trump had the biggest negative effect, IMO, was getting involved with his Truth Social posts about who to vote for. Just like Obama tried to sway the Brexit election by throwing his support against it, the result was a backlash, like it was for Trump in this election. Yes, Trump did have an impact.
Jason, when Reagan proposed quotas (really tariffs) on Japan imports from 1981-1985 experts predicted prices would increase $1,000 – but it didn’t.”
Another failed attempt to pretend Reagan was some kind of tariff and trade war loving economic isolationist like Trump, because he (wrongly) imposed some targeted, limited and temporary tariffs (I believe against his better judgment).
Reagan was not an isolationist. He believed free trade, free markets, free enterprise. He was not hostile to international commerce, he supported it. You would never hear Reagan say “tariff is the most beautiful word in the English language”.
The scope, depth, size and ideological basis of Trump’s tariffs are completely different from Reagan’s.
I thought I read earlier that some people are currently experiencing higher inflation because…..tariffs.”
Your reading skills are not very good, so we understand.
What I actually wrote:
“The question is a red herring because Chicon knows Trump has paused most tariffs for 90 days so he knows they haven’t had time yet to impact prices and in any case effect is delayed because the supply pipeline from a lot of countries we import from, are months long.
But since he is intellectually dishonest and a lying fraud he poses it as “since Trump took office”.
Just pointing out what Reagan factual did. Some people believe that Reagan was a hypocrite….imposing 200% tariffs on Spain and increasing tariffs on European countries during his first term.
I do not. It’s called a balance and being flexible. But again, it is also called a fact.
Looking at the map the Conservatives made some nice gains in riding rich Ontario, where Polievre only got 46% in his riding. But the only province they really dominate is Alberta.
Very interesting discussions today about all the ‘good manufacturing jobs’ Trump’s tariffs will generate.
Are any of you cultists qualified to perform in any of these ‘good manufacturing jobs’? Have any of you ever worked in manufacturing? Do you know anyone under the age of 60 who is out of work in manufacturing?
With an unemployment rate below the natural rate and with the US having dis-invested in manufacturing for a generation, how are employers going to fill those jobs? The only way I can think of is to offer people who are already employed higher wages.
Once those lucky people take the new ‘good manufacturing jobs’ someone will have to fill in for them. Where will we find those people? We will have to offer them higher wages in order to fill the newly open jobs.
This creates what has been known as a ‘wage-price spiral’ since at least the 1960s. Those who are looking at the lasts few months’ CPI (with higher food prices and lower energy prices) have seen no evidence of wage inflation.
It varies as to who or how much of the tariff is paid for by the consumer vs the country exporting the product. The cost of doing business sometimes means absorbing some of the increased costs accompanying doing that business. Whether labor, insurance or tariffs increases the overhead expenses, if you pass too much onto the consumer, client they’ll likely to balk and either do without or find another seller to do business with.
But wait a minute! I just realized where we can get people for all these new jobs. Why not encourage immigration, so that young, willing workers can help out with the labor shortage?
Sorry – I just realized that we are in the process of getting rid of 11 million people who are in the country illegally, most of who have been working in a variety of jobs.
Sounds like a combination of high tariffs and reversing the immigration pipeline might make it really difficult to fill these ‘good manufacturing jobs.
Luckily, Trump has the geniuses on this site to help out with new solutions – so come on Chicon, how about it janzem, use your brain Tina – where will Trump get these workers?
Jason adds numbers to threads, as he is a voracious poster. However, he discourages blog traffic because of how he disrespects those he disagrees with, which is almost everyone except Bitter and BillW.
Chicon – I have no problem answering yout questions.
Steel – Should I force US companies to buy US-made steel at $100 per ton higher price than they can get it from South Korea? No. We don’t need to buy overpriced steel.
Have we had problems with the ships & planes made in other countries? I don’t think so. We’ve had lots of problems with ships and planes made in the US. We have kept the GD Electric Boat factory alive to make submarines that cost much more than those we could get from other countries. We buy Boeing airplanes that fall out of the sky.
The Pharma Industry has been lying about drug imports since I have been studying economics…..and yet, many of the best generic drug makers are in Israel, India, and other countries.
I have worn PPE made in other countries. Have you?
Why not take some people off the welfare roles and food stamps, offering them instead substantial manufacturing jobs. I bet people would be surprised at how many would be interested in doing real work rather than living off the government.
Trump backs down on tariffs. Cultist to claim he is a genius
“President Trump is adjusting his tariff plan today, in particular he’s going to reduce the tariffs charged on cars and car parts which threaten to harm US automakers.
A White House spokesperson confirmed that automakers paying Trump’s tariffs on imported cars, which went into effect this month, will not be forced to pay other duties Trump has implemented, like those on steel and aluminum.
White House officials later clarified that only certain tariffs will not stack, and that automakers could still be subject to country tariffs.
The officials also said automakers manufacturing in the U.S., including foreign-owned ones, will be eligible for a 15% “offset” on the cost of the tariffs on foreign-made auto parts, which are set to go into effect on Saturday, May 3.”
“It’s a precipitous drop in volume, with a number of major American retailers stopping all shipments from China based on the tariffs,” the port’s executive director, Gene Seroka, told CNBC TV on Tuesday…
Without a trade deal, Seroka said that business leaders are opting to increase shipping volumes from other Southeast Asian ports to get the lower 10% tariff rate applied broadly by Trump as a baseline for most imports. However, regional trade is likely to remain “very light at best” until the US and China can hammer out a deal.
Cargo volume was up in the first quarter as companies tried to get their imports in before tariffs took effect. Because of that, there’s a stockpile of goods to fill the shelves for the next few weeks, but if imports drop off 35% as anticipated that stockpile will be depleted pretty quickly.
As I’ve said before, there is a long-term case to be made for tariffs as a way to bring manufacturing back to the US, to create jobs and to make the US more self-reliant. All of those are good things, but none of them will happen in a few weeks or months. Those are things that could take years to really accomplish.
Meanwhile the downsides of tariffs for consumers are coming a lot quicker. Maybe you won’t see it next week or the week after but you will be seeing it soon at major retailers.”
janzam – Do you really think that $3 trillion worth of imports could be replaced by the labor of a few thousand people now subsisting on TANF and SNAP? TANF spent about $33 billion in 2023 and SNAP around $113 billion.
And by the way, there is no such thing as ‘welfare’ – AFDC has been gone since 1996.
Bill, do you think it is a good idea for the US to manufacture its own steel? Ships? Medications? PPE?”
I will answer that.
Only if it makes sense economically. The reason a lot of these industries left in the first place is because they could not be made in the US competitively. The plants were obsolete, the labor costs were too high, the unions made it impossible to operate profitably.
In a globablized economy you should concentrate on what you can make competitively, and import what you can’t.
There are a lot of products where it makes sense to import from China, and it doesn’t make sense to make them here.
Bill and Jason SAY they like lower trade barriers. Yet neither has ever expressed a way to achieve lower trade barriers they find acceptable. Other than a polite request.
We buy construction materials in our business – ranging from sheet metal, gutters, drains, electrical products to appliances etc. We mostly purchase items manufactured in this country – at a higher price – because they are usually better quality and last longer. Affordability is important but so is a quality control environment like we have here.
janzam – Your company may have many valid reasons for buying local, even at a higher price – better service, shorter supply lines, faster response times, maintaining business relationships. That may make sense for your company.
That doesn’t make all imports substandard and domestic products better.
It is true that some imported products, many from China, are garbage. I go out of my way to look for US-made hand tools, kitchen gadgets, clothing – and pay more than I would for an import. And don’t even get me started on Christmas Tree Lights!
But many commodities are bought by specification. If Caterpillar can get a ton of the same grade of steel cheaper from South Korea than from US Steel, they should buy the import. Adding a tariff doesn’t help them as a buyer; it doesn’t help their customers; it puts Cat at a disadvantage in selling on the global market. The only people helped by the tariff are the inefficient US producers (and if the government actually collects the tariff) the government.
Trump has decried free trade and free markets for decades. It is the one thing you can point to him being consistent on: economic protectionism. He describes himself as a “tariff man” and says “tariff is the most beautiful word in the English language”.
Then an imbecilic idiot like Chicon comes here and claims that tariffs, which by definition INCREASE TRADE BARRIERS, don’t really do that, they “lower them”.

Reagan was not an isolationist. He believed free trade, free markets, free enterprise. He was not hostile to international commerce, he supported it. You would never hear Reagan say “tariff is the most beautiful word in the English language”.

But you will!

As I’ve said before, there is a long-term case to be made for tariffs as a way to bring manufacturing back to the US, to create jobs and to make the US more self-reliant. All of those are good things, but none of them will happen in a few weeks or months. Those are things that could take years to really accomplish.

Yes, we need the Ccp medicines too, Who forgot that?”
Zzzzzzz…..
Personally I don’t care where the medicine is made.
I care that it is affordable to as many people as possible who need it.

No, tariffs are not used to lower trade barriers.
The purpose of tariffs is to INCREASE trade barriers. Tariffs are designed to curtail international commerce, no other “reason”.

There is only ONE reason to impose tariffs. That is to curtail trade and decrease international commerce.
That has always been the purpose of tariffs for centuries.
I know the isolationists here think Trump’s tariffs are “different” and “better” than every other tariff in the history of mankind, but they are not.
Trump’s tariffs are the same as any other tariff.

BS.
Typical elitist “let them eat cake” garbage.
Many products made in the US are actually inferior to imported products. That was one reason imported cars got such a toehold in the US market.

janzam – Your company may have many valid reasons for buying local, even at a higher price – better service, shorter supply lines, faster response times, maintaining business relationships.

Alternative universe.

With exceptions such as disability or age, the people living off the government WANT to continue living off the government.
