    For those less enlightened…

“Viracocha created the universe, sun, moon, and stars, time (by commanding the sun to move over the sky and civilization itself. Viracocha was worshipped as god of the sun and of storms.

Viracocha eventually disappeared across the Pacific Ocean (by walking on the water), and never returned. He wandered the earth disguised as a beggar, teaching his new creations the basics of civilization, as well as working numerous miracles. Many, however, refused to follow his teachings, devolving into warfare and delinquency; Viracocha wept when he saw the plight of the creatures he had created. It was thought that Viracocha would re-appear in times of trouble.”

I am hopeful since these are times of trouble.

I just re-read the Hoisington piece for the fourth time and cannot find evidence anywhere that the writers are “2 top tier economists with long established track records of successful economic calls.” In fact, I can find no byline at all for this essay.

There are tens of thousands of economists in the United States and the two writers are probably as competent as most others. The firm they work for are registered investment advisors, so their take is more from an investment perspective than a policy one.

I give them kudos for including actual data in their assessment; the piece is written well and, as you have said, is measured in its recommendations. I would note that the first bullet point on their list is the negative economic effect of the Trump tariffs.

This is something many posters on this site stubbornly refuse to admit. I note that you failed to mention their first concern in your post.

I would characterize their assessment as suggesting something like this: ‘If you are going to do something stupid that is bad for the economy, you should probably consider all of the other factors that are bad for the economy and maybe change some of those decisions.’

I would prefer that the administration not do the first stupid thing.

  98. Oh, i get it! These two ‘top tier economists’ just don’t know Donald Trump as well as you and Tina and Chicon do. You know that he is just establishing a negotiating position, playing 4- or 5-D chess while the rest of us are stuck in three dimensions. He has no intention of cratering the economy – he is just showing the world the Art of the Deal.

Apparently he and you have never heard of credible and non-credible threats.

BillW, as I’ve explained multiple times, that was not my point. I honestly thought you would enjoy the data driven analysis and counter point (albeit ultimately in alignment with what Trump desires) made by the paper.

    Wow.

That is some mature “insult” there.

Did you have to do much research to come up with that?

I bet a 7 year old in a schoolyard could do better than that, but I understand that might be your level.

  111. OK Fla, let’s talk about the performance of the Fed and Jerome Powell for a moment. Powell has been chair of the Fed since 2018, correct? In my opinion, he has been the best chair since Greenspan and Volcker.

When the nation’s governors were shutting down the economy in fear of Covid (led by the weasel who still governs my state), Powell flooded the economy with cash – the most effective helicopter drop in recent history. This was during the time that Donald Trump was hiding behind Anthony Fauci at daily and weekly press conferences, saying things like ‘I’m not going to wear a mask, but you should’. Exemplary leadership from President Trump.

The actions of Powell and the Fed probably kept hundreds of thousands of people from starving with his prompt monetary policy. He argued in favor of stimulus as long as governors and Biden were preventing people from working. It is not an exaggeration to say that the Fed saved the economy.

However, when Congress and Biden kept dumping trillions of dollars into the economy, Powell and the Fed raised interest rates steadily until inflation stopped rising. Once inflation began to fall, he backed off on interest rates (as he should have).

Now, inflation is still above the target rate, which means Powell and the Fed should still be restrictive. The fact that this is inconvenient for Trump does not make it wrong. I sincerely hope that the Fed keeps short term rates above neutral until their target is achieved.

I am quite concerned that the Fed has stopped reducing the size of its balance sheet, still swelled from the attempts to save the housing market following the 2007-09 crash. They probably did it to prevent long rates from going any higher than 5% – which would make Trump happy if he knew anything about monetary economics.

Fla – You and I probably agree about much of this, but I don’t expect you to say so. I do expect Tina to continue to say horrible things about Jerome Powell, because that is her nature.
