Must be a new definition of “competence”.

Trump tanks the market 4000 points, then backtracks and the markets comes back 3000 points.

This is the kind of “competence” that would get you fired in the real world.

I think NYC is the kind of guy who goes to the race track, loses 10 grand, then manages to win 5 grand back.

Goes home and tells wife “Hey, I won 5 grand at the races!”

For those who didn’t click the link, Cash Cow got over the fence, wandered into a casino in Seneca Falls, NY, because the automatic doors opened, and she rubbed her head against a slot machine that still had valid play credit on it, and it turned up three cherries and she won over half a million dollars.

  15. Trying to say that this past week was an example of competent leadership is classic cult member behavior. If Biden had acted like this, well … somehow I think the reaction will be just a little different.

I actually think that this will work out well for Trump. He can still claim that he got what he wanted (punished China) and the markets will breathe easier because, for now, the worst case scenario has been walked back. They will claw back to all time highs and the stock market will become a non-factor again.

I think Trump was the one who got a little yippie, but with good reason.

The thing is that any “gains” you make by threatening trade wars and tariffs, in my view, are not worth the long term damage you do to commercial relationships that often take years to develop.

Still, I give Trump credit for backing off and not listening to morons like Peter Navarro, who probably told him to “stay the course”.

If Trump can coerce some countries to give the US a better trade deal and call it a win, fine with me. Nobody would win a global trade war.

  21. LOL Jason, I do wonder what the breaking point would be. Perhaps a 20% drop in the market caused some cracks. We had Musk v Navarro; Ted Cruz and Rand Paul speaking out; negative media coverage even from friendly outlets. That’s why we got the entirely predictable flip flop.

There’s nothing wrong with a volatile stock market. These past few days were a little north of “volatile” though. Just sayin’. Besides, the option premiums went sky high and shorting that premium was the easiest money out there.

  32. As I surmised  2 or three threads ago,  Trumps  liberation day tariffs were a negotiating tool. He  brought them down to 10% for every country other than China after over 75 countries came  to the negotiating table, and he’s holding the higher reciprocal tariffs as a card for reinstatement if the negotiations fail. He pulled the trigger on the tariff reduction after waiting as long as he could with the rising bond yields. I’m good with this strategy and still willing to see how it plays out in the long run, just like I did with Reagan when he imposed his much maligned trade strategy.  The market clearly over reacted and that volatility definitely was disconcerting for many people. However, it was an opportunity for many others, like myself. I’m looking forward to some more volatility as we grapple with China and those 10% tariffs for the other countries get set to go back up in 90days.  I have cash reserves primed and ready to jump at my target equities (Im also ready for the eventual long term bear market, which will definitely return some day).  Some people look at a hive of bees and see chaos. Some see organized labor.  None of us are bees so to each his own and I wish everyone well.

In order to believe the theory that Trump uses tariffs and trade wars s a “negotiating tool” you would have to ignore his 60 year stance advocating for economic protectionism and isolationism.

It is the ONE thing he has never wavered from. He has perhaps “evolved” on abortion and the size of government and even on deficits, but never on protectionism.

“We were at our richest from 1870 to 1913. That’s when we were a tariff country. And then they went to an income tax concept”

“I am a Tariff Man,” Trump declared in a 2018 online post.”

“he says “tariff” is his favorite word and represents “a very powerful weapon that politicians haven’t used because they were either dishonest, stupid or paid off in some other form.”

Does that sound like “negotiating tool”?

Critics voiced concerns about Trump’s understanding and appreciation for the arts when he took control of the Kennedy Center. However, attendance numbers have told a different story. With a focus on shifting away from politically-charged programming, the facility experienced tremendous success with a widely-attended fireworks show.

Both parties love to build these caricatures of the other side. It’s a strategy that works. And it contributes to a reversion to tribalism and our eventual decline.
