”When Collins pressed him on whether such escalation could turn into a full-fledged trade war, Bessent dismissed the idea. “Not a trade war. Depends on the country,” he said, before explaining that history favors the United States in such disputes.

“Remember that the history of trade is, we are the deficit country. The deficit country has an advantage,” he explained. “[The others] are the surplus countries. The surplus countries traditionally always lose any kind of a trade escalation.”

  3. Tina, hospital expenses these days are staggering. Without insurance I don’t know what the average person would do. When we were first married we oftentimes paid out-of-pocket, had a high deductible and managed our health care within our means. However, the last 2 intensive radiation treatments my husband went thru cost $100,000 each – shocked me!

  8. Bill said….”Since both exporting and importing countries are damaged, they may – and probably should – oppose high tariffs.”

Fully agreed. I guess the issue is what to do when one side imposes high tariffs on the other. It appears that US policy has – for generations – been to politely ask them to stop. As you point out, tariffs imposed by other countries on US imports to their countries hurts the US economy.

Assuming the best outcome is to get other countries to lower their tariffs, how would you propose the US achieves that goal?

Bessent’s response was direct: “Well, I would say they’ve been doing it to us for a long time. And, if they don’t like tariffs, then why do they have them?”

I’m guessing they have tariffs because they see a benefit to them. The answer seems simple – lower yours. It seems they like the current set-up, and are squealing like pigs. Sounds like Trump is right over the target….

Bitter, on the other thread you said you were 57 years old. You’ve lived through the flash crash, the Y2K crash, the dot com bubble, and the great financial crisis. If you were regularly funding your retirement accounts throughout your working years (hopefully at least through payroll deductions), you would have seen that the nice portfolio you have now was due to buying during those downturns. Hopefully, you’re doing the same now.  Downturns can be very beneficial when you’re in the accumulation phase like you are now.  Don’t sweat the volatility

US Payrolls Unexpectedly Soar To 228K, Above Highest Estimate

After today’s shocking retaliation by China, which hiked tariffs on US goods by 34%, the jobs report was an afterthought. To be honest, it would have been an asymmetric afterhought any way, as any upside would have been viewed as stale and not reflecting the new tariff reality, while any miss would have cemented the recession case. And while the market is certainly far more focused on the ongoing trade war, in the end, the March jobs report ended up being far stronger than expected, as the US added a whopping 228K jobs, the highest since December and more than double the 117K in February (revised lower from 151K)…
