  5. Bitterlaw – wife used to walk past that Brooklyn History Museum building often years ago, but never went in. She worked in the area. Pretty sure the Othmer family has something to do with the building and some of the funding. They invested back in the ‘50s with a nice boy named Warren, on the recommendation of a family friend. Worked out pretty well for them, and for the surrounding neighborhood/university, which received a large number of donations.

  7. I agree with JeffP’s analysis of Zelenskyy being a lame duck. He has already gone beyond his legit term of office. The Ukrainian people are war-fatigued, with too few civilians willing to volunteer to fight – hence forced conscription which appears very authoritarian. Finally, Zelenskyy’s chances of winning re-election are not good, making him look weak and irrelevant in the eyes of any negotiating efforts.

Nonetheless, his words laid down a new foundation of how the current administration wanted to deal with Europe, and for that matter Ukraine as well.

  21. Also, for those of you demanding Russia simply withdraw to pre-war borders – that will never happen. Russia is a nuclear super power who has invested more troops, time and money into this invasion than expected. Had an earlier agreement in 2022 been made. – one that bitter and Jason refuse to accept as having ever happened – Ukraine would have remained more whole than it is today. But, as it stands today they will lose more territory, and have less say in whatever agreement is finally reached. Zelenskyy will then fade away, probably with a pile of money to keep him comfortable for life.

Zelenskyy is milking it all he can, by whining for or guilting more money out of Europe, as the US is looking like less of a sure thing. But, the world is in debt everywhere, and money for a never ending Ukrainian problem, with so many rumors of graft and fraud swirling around the aid already supplied, is getting old and hard to explain to their own tax-paying citizens.

It comes after Sir Keir Starmer said the UK would “play its part” in guaranteeing Ukraine’s security after the prime minister was asked this week if he was open to sending British troops as peacekeepers.”

He will learn soon enough that you don’t make concessions before negotiations start. NATO membership is an important bargaining chip, even if it does not happen, it is a concession Pution will have to give up something in return.

Now Hegeseth says “everything is on the table” which is the correct approach.

Senator Wicker has the right idea

MUNICH — U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made a “rookie mistake” when he said a return to Ukraine’s pre-war borders was “unrealistic,” Senate Armed Services Chair Roger Wicker said Friday.

Hegseth on Thursday pulled back some of the comments he made about Ukraine a day earlier, where he said that NATO membership for Kyiv was off the table and that the country could not return to its internationally recognized borders.

“Hegseth is going to be a great defense secretary, although he wasn’t my choice for the job,” the Mississippi Republican told POLITICO on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference. “But he made a rookie mistake in Brussels and he’s walked back some of what he said but not that line.”

“I don’t know who wrote the speech — it is the kind of thing Tucker Carlson could have written, and Carlson is a fool,” Wicker said, referring to the pro-Putin broadcaster.

    February 16, 2025

J.D. Vance’s Munich speech woke up more than Europe. He identified himself in a manner never seen on his campaign trail and in any debate with Tim Walz. The positive impressions I had of him as the right choice made by Donald Trump were logarithmically advanced after that speech. He gets it (Democracy) which is something that appears to be as elusive to the Europeans as it was to the Greeks when Socrates tried to explain to them how their version of democracy was not quite as virtuous as they believed it to be. Socrates was right and eventually, thousands of years later, John Locke figured out what was wrong and how to fix it. Jefferson made things clear and understandable in the Declaration of Independence.

If men were Angels Democracy would have no purpose. They would all think similarly. And they would all speak similarly. After all free speech is about political speech which is often more than dissimilar; it is often the view held by the minority which may, sometimes, be a minority of only one (1). Currently Europe is just a touch short of burning heretics at the stake. They have a lot in common with modern American progressives.
