Redstate thinks the woke NFL survives because it delivers wokeness in an “affable” way.
“Certainly, the NFL, with its social justice-drenched slogans in endzones and, at their option, on players’ helmets, can lay claim to playing the woke game with the best of them. Or the worst of them, if you prefer. So how has it survived and thrived while other sports have tanked in ratings.”
“There is no great resistance to potentially grating social justice-oriented messaging when delivered non-stridently by an affable personality”
It’s a theory. Not one I subscribe to. In my view, the NFL, as stated in the article, is good at promoting itself (or, as I prefer, brainwashing the public). Brainwashing works, we know that.
But actually I don’t think it is wokeness that will cause the demise of the NFL. Half the country is woke and among the half that isn’t enough people are willing to live with it.
What will eventually kill the NFL is the more insidious “safety” issue. There are billboards on the highways in PA now urging parents not to let their children play “contact sports”. It is already reflected in the pussification of the NFL with all the ridiculous “roughing the passer” BS and exaggerated “concussion protocols”.
At some point states like CA will start banning contact sports and liability costs will make it impossible for schools to field teams, etc. The NFL will evolve into more of a tag football concept to eliminate “risk”. As we transition more into the nanny state, the state will decide what levels of risk are acceptable or not.
At the end of the last thread, there was a post that asked why President Polk’s ranking has declined. I recently watched a discussion on C-Span about Polk. The criticism of Polk is that he supported the annexation of Texas and Manifest Destiny. This lead to the debate over the expansion of slavery into the new territories and, according to one historian, hastened the start of the Civil War. According to this historian, the irony is that slavery was not economically viable in places like what would become Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada and Utah.
I think there should be 2 rankings – 1. What was the impact of a President during their time as President? 2. What was the impact of their Presidency on US history going forward?
A Florida pizza delivery worker was so angry over a $2 tip she got from a pregnant customer that she stabbed the woman more than a dozen times, according to police.
Brianna Alvelo, 22, got ticked off Sunday after dropping off a pie at the Riviera Motel in Kissimmee when the customer gave her a stingy tip — so she returned with a pal and stabbed the woman, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office said.
“Alvelo, who was armed with a knife, began attacking one of the victims,” the sheriff’s office said. “The victim was stabbed multiple times, and items were taken from within the room.”
I’ll add a note to the Polk commentary….I had a political science professor in college that said James K. Polk was the most effective President, at least in his mind, ever. He stated that just about everything Polk campaigned on and promised to do, if elected, he accomplished as president.
But that was several decades ago. He might have changed his mind. But then again, he might not be living anymore.
The end-of-the-year controversy appears to be a chasm forming between tech guys and the MAGA movement, over the number of H-1B visas each wants distributed displacing American workers.
We should be stimulating LEGAL immigration and H-1B visas.
Supposedly the immigration deadenders were against illegal immigration, but has NYC’s Cotton-Purdue bill proposing 50% cuts to legal immigration pass the Senate yet?
Several years ago, Florida Power and Light won the prestigious international Edward Demming Award for excellence in multi-platform engineering, efficiency superiority and total quality in the process of energy management.
Erik Prince shared the treehouses Twitter response. Good job in the response. Maybe one of them can Google h1b1 visa fraud. Lots of hits the last few months with federal cases.
Sounds like the MAGA morons want America to return to subsistence farming, which is what will happen if America is deprived of the technological innovation required to keep up with China and rest of the world.
Good morning, and I hope you all had the hap, hap, happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap danced with Danny F*cking Kaye! GFY!
I’ll split the difference with Vivek; one of the replies to his Tweet (what do they call the posts now that the platform is “X?”) had a chain where another poster spoke of the critical difference he has observed has been with the foreign management type rather than the quality of the average worker. The cultural schism does not prevent the worker from doing just as well a job than their American counterparts, it’s that their leadership does not have a good hands on type of insight into what makes their workers function well, so they are hindered by having detached and often condescending Brahmin overlords (in the case of the Indian workers, literally Brahmins). I’ve noticed this, too, in the defense industry as well as in foreign militaries; it’s usually the leadership class that limits our competition, the grunts are just as willing to work hard even if they don’t instinctively have all the know how.
Wow, this will come as big news to the immigration deadenders.
Elon Musk:
No, we need more like double that number yesterday! The number of people who are super talented engineers AND super motivated in the USA is far too low. Rolling Stone this week confirmed reports that Jack Smith, his prosecutors, and even staffers are lawyering up and terrified about the prospect of a Trump DOJ investigation into the special counsel’s office.
“Multiple people who worked with Smith and his core team have preemptively reviewed their private and professional communications, to make sure they hadn’t written anything that could be subpoenaed, publicly revealed, and used against them to paint a narrative of alleged misconduct or supposed anti-Trump bias.”
Smith and his team of thugs are considering how to protect their assets–including their spouses’–and prevent going bankrupt.
“Some federal investigators, including more junior staff, have talked to attorneys and legal groups about possible ways a rejuvenated Trump Justice Department could try to make their lives hell, what precautionary measures they should take, and even how to avoid going bankrupt if the revenge probes come in full force, the sources add.”
As someone who has had a horrendous time finding qualified engineers who actually like to work, I can see Elon’s point.
But, I also had an HB-1 employee who didn’t work out as well, so again, it just comes down to people. We need to have a good pool to draw upon, and I think having HB-1 visas increased, while DECREASING the number of low end visas allowed so it balances out is a good way to go.
Younger son (44) is taking steps to get himself into recovery. Has battled depression and addiction for nearly 3 decades. Been tough here of late. Holidays are never good for him. He is a functioning addict, and does well at his work. But he now sees he needs added help. Too many families have been going through things like this for too long.
A sticking point for him is that his work insurance only pays 80% of treatment costs. He does not have the financial resources to cover the rest and does not want to burden his parents with the other 20%. If he was unemployed, the treat.ent coat would be fully covered.
The good thing is that you can no longer be fired from your job is you enter treatment.
Appreciate your sending of good thoughts for a good resolution.
Walt – Your son and family in a very difficult and sad situation. That said, where there is life there is hope. I wish the best in this difficult time. In the area where your son lives, are there any social workers, church or private groups to help? I don’t know if such a thing exists but are there any clinics through Medical schools or Universities for those training to be psychiatrists, psychologists, or counselors? I know there are clinics like that for doctors and dentists.
Walt, good luck with your son. Part of the battle is won, getting people to admit they need help is often the most difficult party. It is very hard to help people who don’t think they need help or don’t want help.
I don’t know what you can afford, but maybe your son will accept your financial help for the 20% if you offer it in the form of a loan that he has to pay back.
This is one time I agree with Jason – that the first step in attaining sobriety is first admitting and then being receptive to help. There is an organization that is both informative and supportive to family and friends of those caught up in addiction. It’s called Al-anon, and they have chapters all over the country. I can’t tell you how beneficial joining such a group is for everybody involved. It was what got us thru in understanding, not giving up, and supplying the needed help to someone in our own family. This person will celebrate 12 years of sobriety in April of 2025. Recovery works when you work it.
Walt, best wishes to you, your son, and family. I don’t know your son, so what follows may not apply…
It’s common for people who have just admitted to their problem to also feel shame because now they can’t deny any longer that nobody in their life knew about the problem. Usually they do, but the patient has some plausible deniability. They often feel they’ve let down their family and friends.
While this is a path he needs to walk alone, it is sometimes helpful if the family and friends let him know how proud they are of him to show the strength to admit this and to walk this walk.
I will probably dedicate a chapter to each of my greatest fans here, on account it will make them want to promote the book. Maybe 2 chapters each for Tina and Janzam, California being such a big state.
We did not vote to allow intelligent foreigners to come to the U.S. legally so American businesses can compete with China (who we claim is the greatest threat to America)!
Olivia Hussey, age 73, died today. Best known as Juliet in Franco Zeffirell’s 1968 movie. Had to watch this movie in a Shakespeare college class way back then.
“Why bombing Ukrainian civilians and killing, torturing, raping, kidnapping, displacing, and exiling them is entirely justified in the war against the Grifter”
By Tina
Preface by Janzam aka “Putin’s Nurse”, who will explain that from a medical standpoint Putin is merely exterminating people who need to be killed, so there are no moral or ethical issues involved.
If America is to be an isolated economic and cultural island, you can’t have ANY people with “foreign ideas” no matter how innovative and beneficial it would be to American business.
There IS no compromise here. Jennings might have done a good job defending Trump on CNN leading up to the election, but Trump won and if he doesn’t adopt the isolationist and protectionist line 100% and endorse immigration deadenderism 100% he is just one more RINO traitor.
While corporations lay off Americans in white-collar jobs to import foreign H-1B visa workers, hundreds of thousands of young college-educated Americans enter the workforce every year looking for entry-level jobs with decent salaries.
Annually, about half a million American graduates enter the STEM workforce looking for high-paying jobs with good benefits packages. Their chances of landing such a job are cut significantly with the annual inflow of tens of thousands of foreign H-1B visa workers who will compete directly against them in the white-collar labor market.
BREAKING: In a major, crucial WIN for America, and our National Security, a Federal Judge in Texas, based on papers we filed just a few days ago, has PROHIBITED the Biden Administration from selling any materials designated for the Border Wall, that has been wrecked by Biden and his cronies, and which I am going to rebuild in order to protect our Country from violent migrant crime, fentanyl smuggling, sex trafficking, terror attacks, and other heinous, Nation ending disasters. The Judge has also ordered an investigation into the illegal selling of the materials, which will expose just how corrupt and anti-American Radical Democrats are. I am honored to be joined in this vital case by the Great States of Texas and Missouri, and applaud Judge Drew Tipton for doing the right thing for our Country. We have to protect our Borders, and Save America. MAGA!
If only Bitter/Jason would lay off of inflating comments, first about Ukraine and now the H-1B visas, we could have discussions involving serious pro and con opinions, rather than silly allegations whose main purpose is meant to create argumentative discourse.
Regarding the H-1B rift erupting over the holidays, the split is between those wanting such visas given only to a rather small percentage of highly qualified people, versus those wanting these visas available to larger numbers of people, with no cap, having talents and aptitudes equivalent to American workers, but at a cheaper wage. Essentially, the “American First” crowd wants people in this country to have opportunities in securing high paying tech jobs, and not be replaced by foreign workers willing to “slave away” at lower wages in order to get a green card.

Best of luck, Walt.

I am thinking of writing a book.
“My Life as an Internet A-hole”
If it sells well I could retire and have a real life.

I will probably dedicate a chapter to each of my greatest fans here, on account it will make them want to promote the book. Maybe 2 chapters each for Tina and Janzam, California being such a big state.

Dang, notable passing today….
Olivia Hussey, age 73, died today. Best known as Juliet in Franco Zeffirell’s 1968 movie. Had to watch this movie in a Shakespeare college class way back then.
Where has the time gone?

I remember that she was underage in that movie but was topless in one scene. The director would have been charged for that now.

I think that happened when they realized Musk was born in South Africa and Vivek is of Indian descent.

Jennings doesn’t understand the Cult.
There is no free lunch.

Good news here:
Donald J. Trump
@realDonaldTrump
