Bitter’s obvious loathing of Trump supporters (as opposed to Trump voters like him) is the path back to purity and the losing of elections. He’s proving to be the real deadender.

My issue is whether voters who only support Trump will fall away when Trump is out of office. Where were they in 2022 when the expected Red Wave became a trickle? Trump was not at the top of the ticket so many sat out.

    Chicon is full of crap.

If you look at my posts over the last few years, much to Amoral Scumbag’s chagrin, I am the one who has advocated that for the Republican Party to move to a populist, working class party. No one here has made more a case that the traditional Republican base of suburbs + rural coalition could no longer achieve a majority in national elections. For this I was attacked constantly by wes and Amoral Scumbag and others who said I was “abandoning the suburbs.

I strongly believe that the Republican party does have to become the party of working class people of all races, and just as importantly, all areas, including urban areas.

Unfortunately, I don’t agree with many of the policies used to attract these demographics and so I am not attracted to this party. In my view, the new direction is not compatible with the conservative ideals that first attracted my to the party when I came to the US. So be it.

And I do differ somewhat from Bitter’s take. It has always been my contention that Trump is a symptom rather than the cause of this shift. He was smart enough to tap into it but he didn’t create it. The protectionist and isolationist aspects fit very well into his existing beliefs, but many others did not, and he had to adapt a lot of his previous stances such as immigration, abortion, healthcare, role of government, etc.

Thus, while I hope the Cult of Trump ends with Trump, the broad direction of the Republican party will remain, because in my view the populist movement within the GOP is not Trumpism, it was already trending there when Trump rode down the escalator.

I was listening to Hannity on the radio yesterday (sue me, long drive).

He and a guest were commenting on how the LPGA just announced that transgendered females will not be allowed to compete. Some were considering it a significant “victory” against the trans agenda.

However there was a “caveat”. This applied to men who switched to being women after puberty only. IF the transgender golfer was “transition” pre-puberty, then they can compete.

So the Hannity guest said unfortunately this is actually an incentive to transition young children rather than the opposite.

  44. Steve Kornacki’s analysis is relevant to the discussion above.

“By driving up support even further with white blue-collar voters and earning substantial new backing from nonwhite, young and first-time voters, President-elect Donald Trump swept the battleground states and secured a national popular vote victory.

But in the five battlegrounds that also featured Senate races, GOP candidates all received far fewer votes than Trump — enough to cost the party four of them (and nearly all five). While it’s customary for fewer total votes to be cast in down-ballot races, the drop-off was notably worse for Republicans than for the Democratic Senate candidates.

Individual candidate and campaign dynamics can certainly account for some of this. In Arizona, for instance, Republican Kari Lake’s broad unpopularity clearly gave an extra boost to Democrat Ruben Gallego, who actually received more votes than Vice President Kamala Harris did at the top of their party’s ticket.

But taken as a whole, the overall pattern is striking — especially in light of recent history. In the two previous presidential elections combined, just one state produced a split White House/Senate outcome. That was in Maine in 2020, when voters re-elected Republican Sen. Susan Collins while backing Democrat Joe Biden for president.

There are likely several factors at work here, but two stand out as potential longer-term issues for the GOP.

The first involves voters who were motivated to turn out for Trump, but then skipped all of the other races on the ballot. There’s some evidence for this. My colleague Scott Bland found that in Nevada’s Washoe County, the second largest in the state, 6.6% of Trump’s voters either left the Senate race blank or went with a third-party candidate (or used the state’s unique “none of these candidates” option). Meanwhile, 4.9% of Harris’ voters did the same.

This only accounts for a small portion of the GOP drop-off in Nevada, but it’s a result that’s consistent with a feature of our NBC News polling this year. We found Trump faring best with infrequent voters (posting a 15-point advantage among those who hadn’t voted in 2020) who expressed a lower level of interest in the election and were disproportionately young, nonwhite and male. It’s plausible that a significant number of these people ended up being “Trump-only” voters, raising the question of whether the GOP can convert them into full-fledged Republican voters in the future, when Trump won’t be on the ballot.

The other factor the GOP will need to address involves Democratic defectors — traditionally Democratic voters who have essentially made an exception for Trump.

This appears to have been at work in Wisconsin, where Trump won by about 30,000 votes even as Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin was re-elected by roughly the same margin. The drop-off from Trump to his party’s Senate candidate (Eric Hovde) was most pronounced in rural, blue-collar counties, many of which had been Democratic territory until Trump’s emergence. Here Trump expanded his support even further, which was key to his statewide victory, but those gains didn’t trickle down the ballot.

Republicans will need to find a way to make that happen in the future — without Trump.”

Two will discuss and posts 24/7 about why more people dont come here and then spend the rest of the time attacking. belittling or playing the victim when people call them out.

It is a wonder they are allowed out in public without caregivers. I guess they figured out how to get past the parental controls that their moms and dads have put on their computers.

  88. Political division lines are different than they once were. The terms “liberal” and “conservative” have evolved, maybe even dissolved, replaced by working vs elite classes and/or global vs national/populist alignments. Most would probably not even care about Jason and Bitter’s strict guidelines, in declaring the political pedigree of another, as to how “conservative” their credentials are. Rather, most people evaluate what a leader espouses and can get done today, not dwelling on past preferences that have been transformed by their own lifetime experiences and growth..

I feel sorry for you, OA. You can’t stand that I don’t accept all of your opinions or kiss Trump’s ring. You are unhinged because HHR continues despite your prediction it would fail.

As I said, DW and Vic have the same access I do. They can lock me out whenever they want. Otherwise, I’m not leaving.

  92. ”Do you want to be praised for posting here when you hate it?”

The fact you are a lawyer Bitter sometimes is surprising, as you misinterpret, maybe deliberately, what people are saying. Who here is seeking praise? The grumbling happens primarily when posts are completely mischaracterized by hostile, stupidly phrased responses.

Regarding posting here or not..my remarks are written in flurries when a topic is of interest to me. Otherwise, there are more interesting conversations going on elsewhere that have less rancor and sniping, along with lively content.
