Wow, how intellectually dishonest is that? He primaried Ford, who wasn’t even elected President,

    in 1976.

    Reagan won in 1980.

This wins the “stupidest” attempt at gotcha of 2024.

Trump is an establishment New York City billionaire who spent most of his life as a liberal Democrat and Democrat contributor and is on record as saying Democrats have the best economic agenda, deficits don’t matter, and health care should be universal and funded by the government.

Chicon thinks he is an “outsider”.

    Zzzzz……

And Reagan, even though I consider him the best President of my lifetime and of the 20th Century, was hardly an outsider either. He was a product of Hollywood and corporate America (GE) and a two term California governor, and a pretty “establishment” governor at that. He did have a clear and bold agenda, disrupt the welfare state domestically and bankrupt the Soviet Union internationally.

  11. The greatest President of my lifetime was JFK. He was able to show force with a naval blockade turning back weapons and military supplies. More importantly he demanded the removal of missiles and destruction of missile sites already built in cuba. This also prevented the expansion of Soviet and Cuban into latin ans south america.

this certainly prevented the threats by two dictators and highly potential escalation of military activities.

Reagan with his conservative values and TEAR DOWN THAT WALL is the second greatest.

  15. JFK also removed missiles from Europe as a trade for the missiles in Cuba. JFK also failed to effectively stand up for blacks against Southern racist Dems other than calling MLK in jail. The Cuban Missile Crisis was caused by JFK’s weakness in the Bay of Pigs disaster and a meeting with Kruschev. There was a real chance of him losing in 1964.

The fake r senator in Alaska wont

    Shipwreckedcrew

    @shipwreckedcrew

The tricky part of Patel’s confirmation is there are 3 votes who are impervious to pressure – Collins, Murkowski and McConnell. The difference with Patel is a case can be made that he is qualified for the position, and Trump is entitled to an FBI Director he trusts given history. I think that will likely carry the day with McConnell and possibly Collins. Murkowski is harder because she just hate Trump.

  22. Simple. The only goal that matters is to win the General Election. The incumbent already proved they could win a General Election. In 1976, Ford had not proven he could win a General Election for President. In 2024, Trump had lost in 2020 and was a moron regarding Ukraine so voting for a real conservative like Haley in the primary was easy.

  27. DKO,

    1. If JFK, in the early months of his presidency, NOT cancelled the 2 additional planned air strikes to take out the rest of the Cuban air force that was heavily damaged in the first air strike, (due to JFK getting cold feet over the plan begun in the late part of the Eisenhower admin.) and the Bay of Pigs would have been a success instead of a horrid failure, Castro would have been overthrown and we would not have had the Soviet Union shipping and setting up missile bases and then sending a flotilla of ships toward Cuba carrying nuke missiles–and then we would not have had a Cuban Missile Crisis.

    2. Seems like Che Guevara that Castro sent into Latin America sure caused a lot of trouble…

    3. The Soviets were emboldened when early in JFK admin, they built the wall separating E and W Berlin and JFK made no attempt to get that stopped. THAT is the WALL that Reagan told the Soviets “tear down that wall.”

    Just saying…

  28. Reagan and Trump comparisons…

Reagan changed his political philosophy in the late 1940s/early 1950s…well thought out conservative principles and stances. THEN he was elected governor of California and was successful there. THEN ran for president. And was a true conservative as shown by how he operated as president.

Trump has no such “transformation” of his “philosophy and principles” as were documented for Reagan.

Except Reagan. It was great he did it, right? Adult Bitter would’ve been fine with that exception. Even though he’s famous for NEVER giving exceptions to ANY Bitter rule.

He would’ve hated Reagan if he was 45 in 1976. Nothing could be clearer to anyone who has read his posts for 20 years.

  40. And on the Cuba, Bay of Pigs, etc., I know that is a lot of IFS…The investigation afterward showed that the CIA did some major botching of the planning, etc. of the events surrounding the Bay of Pigs, Castro knew they were coming, did mass arrests of Cubans just prior, etc. but the U.S. did have a sizeable force just offshore ready to come in and back up the freedom fighters once they established a beachhead, etc. I recall that one of the ships that the Castro forces sunk of the original invaders wears laden with most of the munitions that those who went ashore to establish the beachhead were then without and they ran out of ammo to fight back against the Castro forces. Sad that many of the Cuban freedom fighters were killed by repeated strafing and bombing runs of the few planes that Castro still had left.

At one point, some U.S. jets did fly over the Bay of Pigs beachhead and Castro’s planes beat a hasty retreat without engaging the U.S. air force. But came back when the U.S. planes left the area. Oh those were the days…of what COULD HAVE been…

  45. Bitter’s book, “Run it Out”, is actually very well done. I really enjoyed it and was easily caught up in the story.

I would recommend others here buying is and also buying it to give as Christmas presents.

    ******************

    The book is about…

Entries in two diaries–one by a mother and the other by her 12-year-old son.

The overstory is a glimpse into a touching, poignant array of insights and thoughts of a mother and her son (and peripherally–through the witty writing style employed by the authoralso of her husband and daughter) as the mom goes through her battle with cancer.  You get snapshots into a lifetime of a happy and loving relationship enjoyed by the married couple during this time and throughout the 20+ years they have been together.

The understory is the often hectic and sometimes tumultuous relationship of the loving parents with their two kids (12-year-old boy and 15-year-old girl) as the kids navigate through the trials and tribulations of the “growing up years” and the various personal challenges and emotions that they face in their own young lives.

The book is an easy read and a unique and well-written account of the thoughts of the mom (as recorded in her diary) as she battles her cancer.  And of the son’s account of happenings and events on those same days in his diary.  The mom’s diary is full of daily entries recounting fond and funny memories during her lifetime, as well as worries and concerns about what the future holds for her husband, daughter and son.  There is a lot of insightful wisdom and wit in the mom’s writing style that is guaranteed to bring you smiles and chuckles with every page you read.  Hard to put down once you start reading it because you want to know what the next day will bring.

  51. Yes Bay of Pigs did fail and there were missiles removed from Turkey. Had the Cuban missile crisis blockade not been successful we may have well been involved in an invasion on our homelands. And there would have been no Reagan presidency.

No one was sure how Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev would respond to the naval blockade and US demands. But the leaders of both superpowers recognized the devastating possibility of a nuclear war and publicly agreed to a deal in which the Soviets would dismantle the weapon sites in exchange for a pledge from the United States not to invade Cuba. In a separate deal, which remained secret for more than twenty-five years, the United States also agreed to remove its nuclear missiles from Turkey. Although the Soviets removed their missiles from Cuba, they escalated the building of their military arsenal; the missile crisis was over, the arms race was not.

I can’t praise JFK for handling the crisis when his weakness caused it. Same for the Berlin Wall. It would be like an arsonist getting praise for trying to put out a fire he started.
