GFYs Part 2

  1. Trump had no lifelong principles beyond trade wars and isolationism. There is no Trumpism without Trump. 2024 will be the last election based upon him.

This is true, but unfortunately those self defeating “principles” will continue to dominate the GOP primaries.

  6. Reagan was a political genius and great President – superior to Trump. Reagan’s ideology and coalition did not last long enough.

Concur. But…at the risk of coming off as a dead ender, I blame GHWB (41) for that; he couldn’t wait to move on from Reagan and his “voodoo economics” and go back to the comfy county club Republicanism that defined the party from about 1940 until 1980 with the exception of the brief blip in 1964.

To be fair to GHWB, the ‘voodoo economics” comment was made during the 1980 primariesl

  10. Yes, it was Jason, hence why he couldn’t wait to fall back on Nixonian economics (sans wage/price controls) once Reagan was out of the way. The infamous tax increase was only part of it.

Lots of Republicans and Democrats are in country clubs around here. I don’t think they are “country club republicans” though.

  17. interesting comments on the Republican Party pre Reagan and then post. Remember, he railed against the way the party was operating in 76 and again in 1980. They didn’t want him. They wanted GWHB who was a northeast Rockefeller (sic) Republican whereas Reagan was a traditional conservative Reagan was the real “man of the people” and no one communicated to them like he did, and none since

Trump dropped from +10 to +6 in Pennsylvania at polymarket. Seems weird. We haven’t even had any updated polling.

  20. For me, the “country club” moniker is more to define the personalities of the people vice where they socialize. These folks belong to the polite set, and if not outright social liberals, they don’t want to openly espouse anything remotely controversial lest they upset their radical chic friends and lose their standing invites to the neighborhood cocktail parties.

That’s what I mean by “country club.”

  25. Jeff, I have to agree!!! Though I think the Phillies will win in the botttom of the 9th the way this game is going…

It’s been a wild ride, basically a playoff game every day for a month

  26. Jeff…Mendoza’s one big weakness is how he uses his bullpen and not knowing when to take apitcher out. He should have pulled Severino before the Harper at bat. and then definitely after.

I think the Phillies win the series. I find it hard to believe they will beat Nola in game 3. I think he’s going to come with all he’s got…though Manea has been pitching well as well

  37. Nola will give up a home run. I think he should serve it up to the first batter and then go scoreless for the next 27 outs.

  46. What made Reagan and Trump very similar is their appeal to the working man. Both were well known because of their long careers in entertainment. It is hard to demonize people, among the working class, those candidates who have been a part of the voters’ lives and who have become part of the American story.

However, the needs of working families changed significantly from the 1970’s to the 2010’s. Shipping of jobs overseas to China and other places as wage costs grew, left working men and women behind. For Reagan, he helped improve their lot by deregulation and cutting taxes. Trump added tariffs to the mix to protect the industrial base.

The GOP is NEVER going to nominate a free-trader again. It may nominate a presidential candidate who is less isolationist than Trump. But the days of Romneyism, Bushism, and McCainism is OVER.

  47. Tariffs do not protect anything but do raise the cost of things. This is especially hard on those who earn less.
