Not the way politics works. In general, campaign managers are risk averse. They worry about Dukakis in tank moments.

If the Dems really thought she won rather than just having the MSM say she did, they would take the win all the way to November.

In my view, asking for another debate so soon after it ended is a display of weakness, not strength. I think they decided Kamala had not done enough to swing Indies to her side and needs another shot. They know the second debate is not going to be 3 on 1 especially if on Fox, so it is a risk.

More from Reuters, a decidedly left leaning press service: The encounter was particularly important for Harris, with a weekend New York Times/Siena College opinion poll showing that more than a quarter of likely voters feel they do not know enough about her, in contrast to the well-known Trump.

The Trump converts said they trusted him more on the economy, even though all said they did not like him as a person. They said their personal financial situation had been better when he was president between 2017-2021. Some singled out his proposal to tax foreign imports, although economists say that is likely to raise prices.

Four of those six also said Harris did not convince them she would pursue different economic policies than Democratic President Joe Biden, a Democrat they largely blame for the high cost of living.

Trump did manage to get in some good points, closing well at the end. 22. Questions I would have liked to see asked and answered:

    To Kamala:

–How are you and your campaign and what you propose to do to make things better different from Joe Biden’s last nearly 4 years?

–Why did it take you 50 days before you put up ANY policy positions on your Presidential website, and why have you granted no interviews except the one where Tim Walz was also there with you?

–Please explain why you were for reparations, defend the police, open southern border,, do away with ICE, and opposed to fracking but now say you have the exact opposite view?

–Can you name and explain 3 policies/actions of President Biden for the last 4 years that you disagree with or would do differently?

–Is there ANY problem in America today, and specifically in the last 4 years, that is not Donald Trump’s fault?

    To both:

–What exactly IS your position on abortion, specifically–do you favor or oppose partial birth abortions, and do you think there should be some X weeks/months deadline where, except for rare medical situations, no abortion should be allowed because the fetus is now a human being and under the Constitution should be protected?

–How has the average family (specifically White, Latino, and Black)fared economically under Trump’s 4 years and Biden/Harris’s 4 years?

    To Trump:

–Why did you not issue a statement or take any action for several hours while the attack on the capitol was under attack?

–Are you really as friggin’ ignorant as you portray yourself to be?

–Do you think you could whip Kamal’s ass in a round of golf?

–If you win the race, would you consider hiring somebody to give you lessons on public speaking?

  24. Trump SHOULD have given this response to the question about whether he concedes he lost the 2020 election?

It was a close race. A razor thin popular vote in 3 states totaling 27,000 votes in out of 29,000,000 votes cast made the difference in those 3 states and in who won the Electoral College vote. And in those 3 states there were 15 million mail in ballots that were counted. Existing state laws in those 3 states about mail in votes were not followed about postmark deadlines and signature verification. Additionally, there were hundreds and hundreds of affidavits filed about voting and counting irregularities in those state –and other states as well–that were never fully investigated. about 60 lawsuits were filed and not a single case actually went to a court of a judge and jury to determine if there were or were not enough “election irregularities” that could have changed the election outcome in those 3 states and the final ECV.

I find it hard to believe that I lost since I was getting campaign crowds of tens of thousands while my opponent could barely get a couple dozen the few times he came out of his basement to actually campaign. Maybe I did lose fair and square. Unfortunately, we will never know.

    Victor Davis Hanson

    @VDHanson

The Candy Crowley Debate What do we remember, if anything now, about the second presidential debate of 2012? Not whether Obama or Romney won. But only how CNN’s Candy Crowley blew up her career and embarrassed CNN—by outrageously hijacking the debate, and as a partisan, fact-checking (and erroneously so) Romney in efforts to help Obama. So, too, we won’t remember much of these debate details, given the shameful role of the two ABC moderators.

Harris came out calm, exceeded low expectations, repeated well her memorized talking points, avoided until the last 20 minutes her trademark word-salads, and repeatedly baited and incited an increasingly angrier Trump.

Harris called for unity, while smearing him as a racist and repeating the old lies about Charlottesville, “bloodbath,” the 2025 project, and Trump’s supposed support for a federal ban on abortion. Trump might seem to have matched or beaten Harris if one only reads a transcript of the entire debate—given she never honestly would or could reconcile her past and antithetical present positions. Nor could Harris explain why she simply did not implement her visions either the last three years or would do so in the next five months.

An irritated Trump started well and ended well; she in-between calmly and successfully at times baited and got Trump’s goat. But all that will neither matter nor be recalled. The debate will instead be remembered as a three-on-one pile-on, given the unprofessional and biased team of ABC moderators David Muir and Linsey Davis. Rather than refuting pre-debate fears that their past anti-Trump biases would warp the debate, they only confirmed them. Both disrupted the tempo to fact check (sometimes in error), and to editorialize Trump’s statements, while letting Harris’s Charlottesville, IVF, national abortion ban, “bloodbath” or 2025 lies go unchecked. Often their disruptive fact checks of Trump were simply wrong, such as their preposterous claim that no states allow partial birth or late abortions where the viable baby is terminated—when at least six states put no limitations on any abortions.

The questions addressed to Trump on January 6 were designed to provoke. They had no counterpart addressed to Harris—as for example, would she distance herself from Biden, or how she came to win the nomination without winning any elected delegates, or her last person in the room on Afghanistan boast, or if she wished to retract any of her inflammatory past statements, such as bragging that the deadly 2020 demonstrations would not and should not stop, or her tweets to help bail out violent 2020 rioters, or her lie that the border patrol whipped immigrants in the manner reminiscent of slavery and the Klan, or her boast that she was a radical and woke. Instead, Muir and Davis only asked Trump about supposedly controversial past statements.

Harris was never reprimanded for trying to speak over Trump. Trump was reminded to address the question asked; not so Harris who rarely did. Watching the entire debate may have aided Harris, given her low expectations. Yet the better sound bites in the next week may help Trump. But the moderators’ shameless bias may swing empathy toward Trump. So, the real story was how ABC’s moderators ruined the debate, their own reputations, and their network’s brand.

  33. Why did you not issue a statement or take any action for several hours while the attack on the capitol was under attack?”

I am not sure this is a factual statement. Seems like the “attack” was underway even before the end of the rally and once the Capitol was breached not sure what “action” Trump could have done if the necessary force to keep it from happening was not in place.

I don’t give anyone a free pass for criminal behavior on J6, and I am skeptical of the Deep State theories, everyone who entered the Capitol unlawfully, attacked police officers, damaged public property and stole public and personal property knew what they were doing and the theory that they should get a free pass because they were “incentivized” or “invited” is a crock.

But at the same time I think the narrative that Trump sat around and watched TV and cheered on the riot was invented BS and propagated by the TDS crowd and the MSM. What exact knowledge Trump. had of what was going on and what he did before he told the rioters to go home is not something we know. For that reason, Trump does get a free pass from me on that particular statement.

  34. The debate had little impact based on the Trafalgar poll. It’s close with Trump having a slight edge because of immigration and inflation. This brings a “change” election dynamic.

Harris got Trump off his game with the “your rallies are boring” comment and he went into Queens NY mode and never recovered. Pretty weak if you ask me. But what are you going to do? It’s who he is which is why he will never change.

Boots DeSantis would have crushed Harris into pieces. Abortion would have been a non issue. RDS is about as constitutional leader I ever witnessed. 42. You gov poll gives Kamala the win 43-28. (30% not sure)

But there are some interesting crosstabs.

The difference lies mostly because only 62% of Rs thinks Trump won vs. 81% of Dems for Kamala. Yet you can bet the overwhelming percentage of Rs who didn’t think he won will still vote for him

And only 44% of women say she won, which to me indicates a lot of women don’t really think she represents them.

“Harris has a clear plurality in this reaction poll, but that’s about it. Much of that difference comes from Democrats breathing a sigh of relief; 81% of Democrats surveyed in this poll think she won, as compared to 62% of Republicans choosing Trump as the winner. It’s closer among independents, though, and this is where the limits of this debate can best be seen. Only 35% of indies think Harris won, while 44% are unsure, with 21% choosing Trump. Interestingly, only 44% of women think Harris won the debate, while 32% are unsure — not exactly the kind of game-changer Harris must have thought she’d won. (It’s almost identical among men, 42/31/27 unsure.)
