  3. This GA poll is sobering. Insider Advantage is a decent pollster. To have a major party candidate shot on Saturday, and then 800 likely voters polled Monday and today, and the shot candidate does not get any sort of bump compared to other GA polls shows just how polarized this nation really is. Maybe most on the left are like Vic’s mom who was angry the kid didn’t have better aim.

  4. reposting, because I took a lot of time to write this….

Cash Cow just handed me one page of the DNC party platform that he somehow got ahold of in his mysterious cow ways. The Dems intent to roll out at their Dem convention and these words will be uttered by Joe Biden in his acceptance speech:

We do not know what were the top 4 items in the platform and speech but we do have these….

    “#5. Free bread on Monday

    #6. Free Circuses on Wednesday

#7. Free weed at all the legal weed stores across the country on Friday. This is so more Americans can enjoy the weekend and forget about their real troubles like inflation, gas prices, turmoil, illegal aliens, etc. that they are facing due to greedy Republican capitalists.

#8. Capping all rent at 5% of family incomes so they have more money to pay for luxuries like food, gasoline, clothes, etc.

#9. forbidding the use of the term ‘man hole covers’ and instead requiring that 1/3 of these covers be referred to as ‘male hole cover’, 1/3 referred to as ‘women hole covers’, and 1/3 being referred to as ‘LBGTQ hole cover’s and that these last group all be painted in bright rainbow colors.

#10. end the Trump tax cuts for all Americans and but get more tax revenue by putting a 100% tax on all billionaires

#11. By executive order, start a program to provide monthly government checks for one-eyed, one-legged, bisexual, left-handed, American Indians and other indigenous populations who have suffered horribly due to systemic racism.

#12. they say that drought and global warming is caused by nature and God, so we are going to start heavily taxing churches and seizing their assets so the government can pay for the needs of all the destitute illegal aliens who, because of global man-made warming, have been forced to buy expensive plane tickets and cell phones to come from Africa, China, Middle East, etc. to get to Mexico so they can cross into the U.S. and take selfies and live here in the U.S.”

#13. not just a law to protect a woman’s right to have an abortion, but a law to REQUIRE all women (and men who identify as women) to have an abortion sometime in their life.

#14. outlaw all fossil fuels by 2026 thereby ending the global warming crisis

#15. reparations checks for all African Americans (or people who identify as African Americans) who are registered Democrats and consistently vote that way

#16. cancelling all credit card debt for everyone who makes has less than $60,000 annual income

(do not have the other numbered items. This was all that was on this one page of the 17-page speech).

J.D. is a true believer—and he is a fighter. Donald Trump rose off his symbolic deathbed on Saturday, stood tall, blood streaming down his face, and pumped his fist in the air, urging his followers to “Fight! Fight! Fight!”—and now he has chosen a wingman who can brawl with the best of them.

Above it all, J.D. Vance, who would be the first Millennial vice president, represents the future of American conservatism. By naming J.D. Vance as his running mate, Donald Trump has given the American Right a dynamic future—one that is more in tune with the plain people than with Republican Party patricians.”

I would like to offer up something, and its very interesting. HHR has been around, in one form or another, for more than 20 years. (THANK YOU BITTER FOR SAVING IT!!!!! and DW for your posting). Despite its now, unfortunately, reduced following, it truly reflects in a microcosm, the current state of the Republican Party.

With just a shade under 30 “members” we run the full gamut of the Republican spectrum. From traditionalist Republicans like JeffP (and please, if I don’t mention where you fit on the spectrum, do not get upset), to Northeast Rockefeller Republicans like Mitt Romney, to traditional but pragmatic Reagan Conservatives like Bitter, DW, Phil, JeffG, Marv and Walt (who invented conservatism when he painted some founding principles on a cave wall), to Conservatives who are are a hybrid of traditional conservatism with more Trump policy tendencies (MG, Chicon, NYC Mike) to Tina (who I think is more traditional Republican than she portends to be but enjoys pissing off some) to the Janz who are Populists/Trumpers rather than Conservatives. (AGAIN, IF I MISSED YOU, ITS BECAUSE YOU FALL ON THE SPECTRUM SOMEHWERE AND ITS NOT A SLIGHT).

Each of these factions is fighting for supremacy over the party…but notice something…its a much bigger tent than the Democrats have.

I don’t know where we go from here. I do think in time, very sadly, we will end up with a third party (calling themselves centrists, though centrists are never really centrists, they are those who don’t want to stir the pot and have no true moral conviction…and tend to acquiesce to the left, who sream and cry the most). A third party will mean we will be much like Europe, led by those who win with 30% of the vote, then force their policies on the rest of the country.

Each in the Republican party believes their form of conservatism (though the Trump wing can not be called conservative, they are truly populists) that theirs is the best form. The question is, when all of us here are gone, and the next generation takes charge, what will it look like. Populism doesn’t ever last…its called populism for a reason because its fleeting and changes on the public whim. Traditional Reagan Conservatism? Pragmatic Conservatism?

It is an interesting question I pose to you all.

  15. I am with Walt. Reagan Republican. I believe in Reagan’s 11th commandment, and I believe in a fairly big tent, because not all states are the same.

Populism happens when the large number of normally disinterested but eligible voters suddenly gets involved for a cycle or two, and then they fade back into the shadows and become uninvolved, allowing others to think for them and make decisions for them.

If every voting American took the job seriously of caring for their own country, then there would be no ‘populism’ as such, just an ongoing battle for the direction of the country.

  18. DW,

you could also add another category of Republicans, “the whack-a-doodles.”

“Wack a doodles” are the “purists” who:

–wish to purge all non Whackadoodles from the party and relentlessly call them RINOs because their view on subject or issue 1,2, or 3 is not quite like the Whackadoodles

And they see all the issues as “Black or White” (not as in race–but as in ALL GOOD, or ALL BAD). Abortion being a good example. No abortion. Anywhere. Anytime. Any place. and……NO EXCEPTIONS for rape, incest, life of the mother, fetus in the womb is dead, no to allowing any abortion prior to any fetus gestation period, etc. The W-A-Ds do not comprehend the complexity of issues and to them it is real clear and not complex at all.

–are driven to be almost cult like (Bitter term) toward their 100% support of a particular person like Trump, whether that person adheres to the R philosophy or not, or even deviates from it. It is ok for “Their Guy” to deviate.

–favor populism and appealing to emotion rather than intellect

–Whack-Doodles would rather send a message than win, do not believe in compromising one tittle, prefer no loaf or even a slice of bread because they want the whole loaf or nothing (and often end up with sending messages and getting nothing but Democrats elected.)

WE HAVE MORE AND MORE OF THESE WHACK-A-DOODLES RUNNING FOR AND GETTING ELECTED TO POSITIONS IN WV

WV “real Republicans” have proposed getting rid of WV State Income Tax entirely and replacing it by reinstituting the sales tax on food and raising the state sales tax (20% of which is paid for by NON-WV residents like tourists and those who travel into WV) for a NET TAX REDUCTION to everyone, but the Whack-a-Doodles vehemently oppose and torpedo that idea.

WHY? “Because that would mean we would have to vote for a ta increase, and I will never vote for a tax increase.”

Dumb as a box of rocks.

  24. I believe the current “populist” chapter of the conservative movement – yes, it is conservatively anchored in the constitution – is driven by passion to actively alter the progressive path we have been on since Obama’s claim to “Transform America” under his presidency. My husband often explains how difficult it is, and how long it takes, to turn a Naval carrier around from one direction to another. It’s a “shoulder to the wheel” action, and that’s what the new populist movement is doing, with lots of fight and passion, to turn the US around from where Biden is rapidly taking us. I personally don’t know how long this populist-based movement will last. But, respectfully to what many of you predict, I think it will depend on how successful the next 4 years are under hopefully a Trump/Vance 2024 win. If by 2028 there has been a popular reversal of circumstances here in the US, Vance will most probably be the nominee advancing these policies for a new generation of voters for another 8 years, as long term strategic planning has been intricately woven into a movement having long term permanent goals.

I and other Reagan Republicans believe NOT ONLY Reagan’s 11th commandment, but also in patriotism (and instilling it and even teaching it), love of country (despite its flaws), belief in strong family, personal responsibility, traditional values including faith-based actions, strong defense, spend tax dollars to prevent problems rather than spend 10 times as much money to FIX the problem afterward you let happen because you failed to address the problem in the first place. And limited government (power is finite and either you let the government have more and more of it, or you let the people keep those powers). Lower taxes (and less intrusive govt.) which can be achieved if you stop putting the cart before the horse.

We should not have generations of families who are on welfare and 100% reliant on govt. and instead need to (temporarily) do what is necessary to help empower them and help lift these people us to be able to stand on their own two feet instead of relying on the government largess to take care of them and to be productive and contributing members of society who can work to achieve the American dream. Government should be spending resources to fix the causes of the problems rather than spending far more to throw money at the results of the problems. Wrongheaded to boost government and govt. power by hiring quotas, DEI, condone and embrace transgenderism and asking people what sex they identify as, and let boys in girls bathrooms and sports, special laws to protect special groups, etc. Enforce laws that are on the books to protect people and people’s property. No look the other way and don’t arrest and prosecute and provide consequences to bad actors because they are this or that. We must be a nation that believes in Rule of Law.

You’re already busy using the Paulist label before the convention is even over. No where has Rand/Ron Paul’s name been linked to Vance. Rand Paul is not even attending the RNC Convention, and yet here you go flinging around aspersions at a guy who hasn’t even been able to speak and publicly introduce himself. Yes, Vance is a conservative in the framework of a populist. But he will be a spokesman for Trump policies (not Paulist ones), which I believe Reagan would endorse if he could speak for himself, rather than be captured by others old, glossy memories of how they saw him.

  51. Jan, you look myopically and are very one issue focused, making sure Zelinsky doesn’t get “money”. I disagree with Vance on his foreign policy assessments. They are rooted in the Paul movement, which then were adopted by the populists.

Unlike Legacy media, which is misrepresenting his positions on abortion (he actually says,  “I’ve always believed in reasonable exceptions.” Later, he specified that he supported exceptions for rape, incest, and preserving a mother’s life”…which I think would align with many here. IVF, as well, they are misrepresenting.

Immigration – most here would agree with him. Taxation. Border Security…again, all fall in line with Vance.

Where I believe he veers from Conservatism into populism is his support for unions (which I believe disadvantage workers in the long run and are corrupt), tariffs, opposition to free trade, etc. All of which aligns with Trump, but not Conservatives.

Is that a better assessment, considering you believe “I haven’t given him a chance, or looked at his record?”
